So, is it worth me getting Bayonetta 2 at some point or should I just get hold of this new one? As mentioned earlier, I only recently played the first game and enjoyed it quite a bit. My only real complaint was that I was a bit shit and the game seemed to enjoy punishing me for being shit. The best way to get upgrade points seemed to be by getting the high level awards at the end of the level. I pretty much always was getting stone, as I would die 3-4+ times a level. That was kind of frustrating. I didn't really care much about the story and found myself either skipping or zoning out during the cutscenes. Didn't have a clue what was going on, so don't feel like I need to play 2 for the story. Absolutely worth it. 2 is more refined and a touch more forgiving. The set pieces are dialled up to 11 too. I played 1 and 2 back to back on WII U (Yeah I had one of those, I liked it too) having played them that way 2 felt superior in every way to the point where I thought 1 was a bit one note by comparison despite really enjoying it before booting up 2

Thanks all for commenting whether 2 is worth it. Think I will grab that before going for 3. Probably for the best, rather than adding another new Switch game to list of one's I should buy (still need to get Splatoon 3 and will likely get the new Pokémon).

I’m hoping for a sale on one and two so I can replay them.
Will wait on 3 for a while.

If you buy Bayo 2 physical, you can download the first for free. If you buy either digital, the other should be cheaper as well
And I do think Bayo 2 is a refinement but still think the first is more memorable and the better game

Bayo 2 is way better than the first IMO. It's mechanically worse thanks to the Umbran Climax stuff and a bunch of enemies basically being invincible to regular attacks (especially bosses), but unlike the first it isn't packed full of gimmicky minigames and gimmick fights and instead has lots of great, long sequences of straight up fights against regular enemies for you to just enjoy the combat. Bayo 1 can't go 2 seconds without some random curveball shit.

Gonna reverse Duffking's opinion. I think it took a similar path as the Ninja Gaiden series. Where II definitely fine tuned the combat system, but everything else was worse.
Play it if you want, but the story is somehow worse than the first game's so you won't be missing much if you skip to 3. But it is fun to play.

At least we agree that NG2 sucks.

Played through the prologue and chapter 1 as Bayonetta. It's really good: you're constantly throwing out huge attacks and they've kept the huge scale from 2. Performance is iffy and the graphics often look super rough but it does control well enough and I've not felt like the Switch has let me down too badly in battle yet (though there was one bit where things were getting a bit too particle heavy and I couldn't really see much of anything).
One thing I really liked was the 'this is where the next cutscene happens' button which you can press. As a result I was able to get (I think) everything from Chapter 1 without doing that annoying thing where you stumble into a cutscene and block stuff off. Kudos for the pause screen also showing not just the time you last autosaved but a little polaroid picture of what was happening too. Nice little touch.

Just turned up from Currys via DPD and the case looks like the delivery driver used it as a cushion, but cart itself is fine... Tempted to ask for a refund, but at the same time can't really be arsed.

I'll try it eventually. Sounds like it completely craps the ending but everything else is fun.

Got the LE of this, bloody huge box (slightly dinged, but hey). Odd choice of freebie being the extra Switch case and coversheets of B1, B2 and B3... I gather Nintendo Store ones also got a steelbook but I mainly got it for the artbook. Still need to actually finish a Bayonetta game too ...

From what I've played it's the resolution and that mesh transparency/alpha to coverage which is worse than the framerate. It's definitely a game which would largely fix itself on better hardware; I do think that John was a little harsh on the artwork.

It's definitely a game which would largely fix itself on better hardware; This seems to be the case with quite a few Switch releases recently. I really hope that this is an indication that they are planning to have a) a Switch 2 fairly soon and b) that it will offer backwards compatibility and improved performance for Switch games. I've been worried that Nintendo might be their usual dickish selves and try to sell us all these Switch games again when they finally release new hardware.

I can't remember how/if that was possible from Wii U to Switch as that was the B.C. (before Covid) years (and also a different game library probably) but from Switch to Switch 2 they should make it possible if it isn't. I've also got a few downloaded stuff I'd hate to have stuck in the old one... Edit: unless you meant you don't want them to try and sell the games again, in which case I obviously agree

Deep down I think I should do pc only and emulate Nintendo games but I’m trying to be honest and hope I don’t get ripped off as a result. Mind you, if I didn’t keep a large backlog maybe it wouldn’t be such a concern

You can still, presumably, play your existing switch and all it’s games even if they release switch 2

Unless you want to progress two games at once, or something. Would certainly help get through the ol' backlog!

One of my bois buys boxed games for his switch but pretty much only plays them on the PC unless he is out and about which, if you care what I think, is morally acceptable. And if they did dick people with no back compatibility, you could just dump them on eBay.

Played a few chapters last night and agree DF seem to have been a bit harsh on it. Maybe that day 1 patch addressed some stuff? Performance doesn’t seem THAT bad.
The dithering transparencies are really weird though. To be honest if I didn’t know better I might have been able to convince myself it’s a deliberate homage to the Saturn

It's a way around the low memory bandwidth on the Switch - drawing lots of transparencies on top of one another is something it's not very good at so doing it that way (and at lower resolutions in cases where they can't) saves a lot of processing power. It's one of the things the 360 was really good at and is one reason why there was such a difference in performance with that and the PS3 version of the original, and it's also a reason why the second game didn't get a resolution bump on Switch coming from Wii U even if other games did.

Isn’t the switch basically as powerful as an Xbox 360? it should be able to handle this stuff at 720p

It's doing a lot more visually than the average 60fps targeting game on 360 did - hence why it runs the OG Bayonetta without breaking a sweat. Same for Bayo 2, which struggled on Wii U. It's using some way more advanced visual effects etc which sadly the switch hardware just doesn't deal with very well.

Saga of bullshit unfortunately continues: You have to be pretty committed to your bullshit as a British woman to ask money to donate to a group placing up anti-abortion billboards in Kentucky. It's not even a charity.
Anyway, game is pretty good so far if it is just more of the same. Kinda feel it's a little difficult to make out what's going on sometimes especially in the versus where you have to use the infernal demons. Like should I be focused on the kaiju battle or to make sure Bayo doesn't get hit? But when you're dodging with witch time piling the pain on, it still feels as good as ever.

I’m up to chapter 6 and the main thing I’m learning is that I should be using the magic/demon attacks more. Whether it’s hitting ZL at the end of a combo for a huge follow up, or pushing ZL and an attack for a quick summon, or using the demon button instead of dodge for a parry, or just queueing up a few attacks on a bigger enemy then releasing the button and zipping in for some attacks as Bayonetta, it feels like if your magic bar is full then you’re missing out on damage. The demons naturally having good AOE damage ends up doing a decent job of crowd control too.
