I just use Aerith to spam "Prayer" for healing during longer/tougher fights.

I didn’t see this til after I’d finished the game but the trick with Aerith from what I read is basically use the synergy attacks (the R1 ones) to build up her ATB faster, then lay out wards while using Tempest to keep your little casting buddy up. Then you become a mobile magic powered turret that can warp away from danger instantly when needed. Takes too long to build up on a standard fight though. I'm confused, I thought the R1 synergy skills just didn't consume ATB? Do they restore it too?

They can but for most characters they are slower at building ATB than normal attacks which is the trade off for the damage they can do.

Not following sorry, if they’re slower at building ATB then why use them to build ATB faster?

Aerith’s different because her normal attacks build ATB so slowly, so getting another character to help gets her to those 2 or 3 ATB meters she needs to set herself up faster. Once she’s warping around firing lasers she’s fine, it’s just that first build up. You can cover with materia like first strike and the manual ATB boost too.
That’s what I saw anyway, I saw it after finishing the game but it makes sense that she would be a character who needs to get a bit of momentum given that there are other characters who need to set themselves up a bit before they really get going like Red and to a lesser extent Tifa. I admit I did spend a lot of time just using Cloud because he can do everything straight away, and Yuffie because she only needs one ATB to get a good game plan going.

What abilities do you have shortcutted for her?

Again, I haven’t tried it myself but when I use her in that one mini game I made sure to keep up the wards, especially Chrono (the one that slows down enemies when they get in your face and does a bit of damage), arcane (double casts spells for anyone standing in it, not just Aerith), and most of all radiant (laser attacks, can’t be hurt when charging a spell). I also had sorcerous storm as a “get off me” button.
Kind of makes me want to jump back in and give it a go as I like the sound of double casting Comet on stuff.

It sounds like it's fair to say that she's more useful when it's worth doing the setup she needs. I guess having the various wards as the shortcuts makes most sense?

Actually doesn't that auto-unique ability materia work based on what shortcuts you have? I wonder if I could get Aerith to cast her wards automatically...

You have the auto weapon ability materia too though I didn’t mess around with that to see how customisable it is.
A couple of other things I didn’t know:
When you use the vision skills to increase your ATB to 3 bars, it doesn’t actually make the bar longer to charge, it just moves the marks so you effectively get a 50% haste as well that stacks with an actual haste.
If you have a multi-element materia on auto magic or elemental attack it’ll choose the right one for the enemy automatically. That might apply to multiples but I didn’t see that mentioned.

Here's a question. Are you guys bothering with Barriers and Manawards and things like that? Other than setting them all up with Amplify it seems like more trouble than it's worth...?
I miss the Big Guard enemy skill. Barrier, M-Barrier and Haste on all.

I don't think I bothered with either. It was also a bit whacky to see both the barrier spells and also Protact / Shell.

Barriers versus protect/shell are more for when you know someone’s just about to take damage so I think they would be more situational.
The normal buffs are actually quite powerful and make a good difference. Put Brave onto Cloud or Faith onto Aerith and let them rip - by the last third I could reliably hit the 9999 damage cap on a staggered enemy.

I’ve just made it to under Junon. The first thing I do is continue the card game. So much fun! I have found a few of the bosses to challenge me a bit, which I’ve managed to get by.. just. It is a bit frustrating, that you may not have the right materia equipped prior to the fight, so it’s a case of quitting out, then changing it up. Surely there’s a better way to do this?

Just reached the first piano since the demo. Got a perfect in about ten minutes - much easier to perfect than the one in the demo / flashback.

Don't worry, they get much trickier! I still got As for everything first time though, the thing you've got to watch out for is the notes they skip because of the mushy stick-based controls. It really throws your rhythm off even if you know the track.

Why is it every FF card game the CPU cheats?

Still hanging back on starting this based on promised performance patch.
For something promised “soon” would appreciate some sort of update on it 2 weeks in since launch!

Really struggled with the first three or so hours of this, but played another 10 and it's really got it's hooks into me now. Completed everything in the Grasslands area and loved every second of it.

I’m not particularly sensitive to that sort of thing but I can’t say I’ve noticed any problems with how the game runs. I don’t even know what mode I’m in, whatever the default is. Probably graphics mode? It’s fine, I can’t say I’ve noticed any frame rate issues, graphics look great, there’s the odd bit of minor pop in but that’s it. How will you know the patch was worth waiting for?

Up to Gongaga. This game is absolutely enormous.

I don't know how I feel about the game at the moment. Now I've got up to Costa del Sol, with more silliness and jokes.. I feel a bit like I'm too old and jaded to be walking around with Tifa in a skimpy outfit.

I reached the sit ups mini game over the weekend, and almost threw my controller out of the window with the second level on it.
The whole "hold trigger half way, then all the way when the gauge is filled" bit is so inconsistent!
It wouldn't bother me so much if I weren't quite so OCD about these things, but leaving that incomplete really bugs me - I just know I'm never going to be able to complete it with the way that minigame currently works.

Haha
Well conversely I feel like I'm too old and jaded to spend hundreds of hours on a game that takes itself too seriously. I really like that the game has remembered and respected the tone of the original. I wasn't a huge fan of the emo era of FFVII with the compilation stuff, even though I accept it was justifiable storyline-wise.
In fact one of my biggest fears by far before the remake was that modern day Square Enix would completely botch the tone. For a whole decade or so it really did seem like they'd forgotten what kind of game OG FFVII actually was

Yeah, I'm glad they have kept the tone of the original game. It's more me being a miserable shit. On a big positive I'm enjoying the story, mini games, and open world. I just grin and bare the relationship stuff.
Perhaps I shouldn't have rinsed 16 before playing this.

I'm putting Queen's Blood on the backburner by the way. I've got to what appears to be the final "boss" of the questline and it's a massive jump in difficulty. Quite rightly - that's fine. But I did some Googling and basically, completing that tournament in Costa del Sol is all but required, and there's just too much of it for me while the main story is waiting to be finished.
And frankly I know I'll never get back to it after the credits roll...

Just completed all 8 of the Condor battles in Junon. Enjoyable. And Hard Mode 3 & 4 were hard.
