Hoo boy
Not going to lie at first I thought that this trailer represented a new batshit insane direction where Sephiroth is an ally. I forgot the Nibelheim flashback was a thing.

Ohh man... I was already on the fence with how they're reimagining the original story and this looks even more mind screwy... Honestly my biggest gripe is how they changed the way the original built up the terror of Sephiroth. Sneaking around trying to avoid the Midgar Zolom (at that point in the game you basically don't have a prayer if it catches you) then seeing one casually impaled on a tree presumably by him, following the trail of blood and corpses in the Shinra building then finding his sword right in the President's guts... He was built up on actions and rumours alone, and that was scary af even years after it was common knowledge. All that is pretty much out, in the new story it's like, "Yo I'm here, what up Cloud?" And that's before getting into all the parallel universe and "changing fate vs preserving the original" conflict they've got going on... And honestly, I wouldn't even mind all of that if we also had a straight remaster of the original to go along with the new take, the original story but those awesome graphics/music etc. (which is what I think a lot of people wanted the remake to be from the start). Hell, I like Kingdom Hearts' story and that's a mess and a half But for it to only be the "reimagining"? I just don't know... Then again it's gonna sell like hot cakes anyway so it's not like they'll actually think people weren't happy with it.

That being said I do like some parts of it. Like giving Jessie more screentime.

Not that I'm excluding myself, of course (although I do try to complain about things that has some substance rather than every minor nitpick )

I was initially a purist and hated the idea of them changing the plot or doing anything meta, but after finally playing Remake it absolutely won me over. They absolutely nailed the characters, setting, music and combat system. I'm fully on board for the sequel no matter where they take it.

It's not a remake, not really. It's a sequel. Sephiroth is aware of the events of the previous game and you have a whole timeline shift with Zach now too which looks like its gonna have its spotlight too. I think they said they would still go through and hit the main parts of the first game, so we'll still have Nibelheim, Costa Del Dol, Gold Saucer etc but with changes. I dunno, I think its more interesting than just a straight remake but it all depends on how stupid it can get. If they lean in hard on bringing in Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus then it can get pretty bad. And while Im glad at 3 parts, theres still a lot of game to cover.
Ever Crisis at least seems to be the FF7 Remake that people want.

Yes, they could mess with that as well and prob will, but if you see the trailer shown yesterday too it has the same perspective as the original game for exploration while the graphics for the in game combat matches the Remake.

As someone that never played the original Final Fantasy VII or any of the tie-ins, but absolutely loved Remake (besides being completely confused by the final couple of hours), Ever Crisis sounds like the perfect way to get caught up with what on earth is going on ahead of Rebirth.
Or it would be perfect, but...
I really should just play the original VII.

I've still not played Remake. As somebody who loves the original but found all of the "complation" stuff utter bobbins where the additional stuff didn't add to the lore, but rather detracted from it, I just assume I won't like it.
Sorry just felt like whinging.

Yeah for a remake they managed to nail the tone of the original for the most part. My only gripe (probably my preference) is the combat. I'm not a huge fan, but it's serviceable. I think the masses want a hack and slash these days.

Maybe when it's free, or at least dirt cheap. Not sure I'm a fan of the "realistic anime" art style either (that's not just this game, though)

The character design isn't really that anime IMO. It's quite a realistic look by JRPG standards. Or maybe I've just become numb to it, I dunno.
But yeah you should give the remake a try even if you're not a fan of the compilation stuff. It's a massive jump in quality if that's what you're comparing it to.

It's the hairstyles and general aesthetic of the costume design on fairly realistic, if rather good looking, people. Just starts to look a bit cosplay to me. It's like a weird uncanny valley thing, and it could well just be more. Just stuff like how big the buster sword is, especially compared to Cloud's physical build. My suspension of disbelief just fails. I had similar issues with FFXV and even FFXIV, and to a degree FFXIII.

I think the masses want a hack and slash these days. I thought the combat was a massive step up in quality from FFXV. I was expecting to dislike it, but came away enjoying it quite a bit. I would still prefer something a bit more old school, but I think they did a great job of managing to give a lot of control to the player and still including buffs, debuffs, status effects and the like that you would expect from an RPG.
