FWIW re: expanded universe, Crisis Core's ending made me tear up a bit even without having played the game. The music, the memories slowly fading, the fact that you have to play through the breakdown instead of it just being a cutscene... It all comes together really well for the emotional gut punch.
Bit worried about how they're going to handle Zack in this because of that, actually, he had a great story but there's plenty of room to mess it up if handled poorly...

Yeah for a remake they managed to nail the tone of the original for the most part. My only gripe (probably my preference) is the combat. I'm not a huge fan, but it's serviceable. I think the masses want a hack and slash these days. I thought the combat was a massive step up in quality from FFXV. I was expecting to dislike it, but came away enjoying it quite a bit. I would still prefer something a bit more old school, but I think they did a great job of managing to give a lot of control to the player and still including buffs, debuffs, status effects and the like that you would expect from an RPG. I just felt it got a bit too overwhelming sometimes, especially party management. Then again I had completed XII, VIII around the time the Remake came out. XII would be my personal favourite system. Just so easy to setup and roll through enemies.

drhickman1983 - it was free on PS+ a while back, which probably doesn't help you... I just got a used physical version for £17 as the PS+ version didn't allow free upgrades to the PS5 version. It was OK, but I'm not really a fan of the series and had no connection to the original whatsoever.

I’ve played the opening to Remake five or six times but I’m not a fan of how chaotic the combat felt. I was probably just bad at it but I didn’t feel very in control which was a bit jarring when the original is very deliberate and tactical.

As action RPGs go it's pretty good. Once you get an idea of what's going on it's nowhere near as chaotic as it appears and tactics are definitely a thing.
But I agree it's a hell of a change from the original. Did you not try that classic combat mode or whatever it was called?

Having played the first one I wouldn’t recommend that, I’d find that too much of a slog.
It’s not a MGS Ground Zeroes situation, the first one is most definitely a full game.

I've not played the original, but I understand it should be considered more of a sequel rather than an actual remake. The plot diverges quite a bit and ends up being something quite different.
It certainly felt like an ending to me, like the end of a film that is part of series rather than the end of a scene mid-film.
Perhaps familiarity with the original would make it feel more like stopping mid-story, but I would think it should still feel a complete package.

Obviously I can't speak for your personal preferences, but I'd expect that not only will you be waiting forever for all three to come out, but playing them back to back might be too much and you'd be completely sick of it by the end. It's fixing to be a bona fide trilogy, so approach it how you'd normally approach an RPG trilogy e.g. Mass Effect or the Witcher. I wouldn't recommend treating it differently just because it's a remake

I dont think anything does get retconned, it's more that this is both a remake and a sequel. Theyve established that this appears to simply be happening over again and by fighting and defeating the embodiment of fate, its created another timeline where Zach lives and is going to have importance. I think it will still hit all the plot points of the original but the potential is there for character decisions and big story moments could change. But I just worry if any of that means pulling in from what was also established in Crisis Core or *sigh* Dirge of Cerberus, which has already been done.

When they revealed the remake to be only the first part, I thought it didn't make sense from a commercial standpoint, because Midgar is the most famous part and the one everybody remembers (except the one where Aerith bites the dust). After that, the game goes a bit more basic FF with all the world map travelling and wacky locations and events. All future parts of the story such as Junon, Cosmo Canyon, Cid's town, the Temple of the Ancients, etc. would have naturally gathered a lot less attention.
This way, they can make their own story without being shackled to following the same plot as the original (and you can be sure they will be focusing on the most popular characters).

I'm studying this trailer more than is healthy. Trying to figure out where I can place the VO to points in the original game.
Is this lifted from the ending to the first part? Either way it's non-canon to the original.
Clearly canon from the Nibelheim flashback.
Canon. Cloud referring to Tifa nearly being killed by Sephiroth in Nibelheim. Interesting bit of projection from Tifa there, too, I like it.
Probably Cloud talking about Zack? If so seems like Cloud has definitely learned or is learning the truth. Seems canon to me.
In the original, Aerith says this to Cloud on their date. Canon. Pretty interesting how the "Aerith knows more than she's letting on" was in the original too in a different way.
Gonna go with non-canon. I mean, it's something Zack would have said if he was alive, but...
Huh, now that I've had a good look, other than the footage of Zack arriving with Cloud in Midgar, it's more or less the same. It seems to me that they're sticking with Cloud's general arc?

I really struggled to get on with Remake when it first came out on PS4. As good as it looked, like others here I couldn't get a handle on the combat, having not played an FF since... 10?
Put it on the back burner and started it again recently on PS5. Put a bit more effort in and got onboard, it's fucking great. Even the mundane tasks I couldn't stomach first time round have been alright.

(BTW that YouTuber is basically YT's FFVII guy and is popular amongst the devs themselves)
Lot's of stuff in there about the direction they're going to go and the extent of the changes, or lack thereof. Seems to me that they're aware of the need for some open world-esque design for the next part.

I can't see how they can make it open world, without making it similar to 15, where there were huge sparse open fields.. which weren't really fun to explore. I'm not sure why modern FF games are so adverse to using the 7/8/9 open world map. It does the job. Just make them get a vehicle or a chocobo, rather than running over the map?

Yeah the original's world map was pretty segmented to funnel you through the plot tunnel and I think they will have to maintain that. I've always thought it would be the original's structure but inside a XV style container.

I just finished Remake yesterday. Wasn't overly keen on the over indulgence of Sephiroth after not digging Hojo's lab, but having sat on it, I'm on board for the direction they're going... PROVIDED they still hit the story beats as they did in Remake. All the Weapons awakening, the music that goes with it, playing through as young Cloud in Nibelheim and seeing Sephiroth going bat shit, breaking back into Midgar, salvaging the big Materias, I want it all. If they expand on things like Remake, that's fine.
Only questions I have... "You have 7 seconds"- what's that all about? And Zac- I'm assuming he's now alive in this timeline due to the crew fiddling with time / the whispers?

Heh that post took me back to the old place. Although that thread went straight from "part one will only be 0.5 minutes long because it will be an exact replica of the original!" to "there's too much padding and they're going to change everything!" Although I happen to agree about padding... Having checked out the trailers and interviews for Rebirth I think it's pretty conclusive that they're going to keep the story beats/world etc the same. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if little to nothing comes of the teased changes at all until the very end of part 2. I don't think they're dumb enough to completely change the story. How do you even write a part two that completely disregards everything you established in part one. My theory has always been that the main idea is make the player think they can maybe save Aerith in some way - but it turns out it's still inevitable. I think that would be a great way to add fresh impact to what happens . And maybe Sephiroth still does what he does, but with a different motivation, because he remembers what happened the first time . Basically, stuff broadly the same but with new subtext. Although again I can't figure out what they're doing with Zack. The more I've thought about the more I enjoy the fact the game is going to be, to an extent, unpredictable, and I think it's a good call. Of course I could be wrong and it's now a game about Cloud and Sephiroth teaming up against force ghosts

That's a good suggestion about thinking Aerith can be saved, but I just wonder how much the difference it can make if the whispers try to set everything on course. They straight up kill Barrett, only to have him resurrected. I got the feeling that Aerith starts to realise more as the game went on and she pretty much knows her fate. There's certain things she says to Cloud like "enjoy the short time we've got together" or something to that extent. I did watch a theory about the 7 seconds thing. Said that Sephiroth is on screen for 7 seconds from the time he jumps down to when he kills Aerith. Might be reaching but it's that up in the air, like you said- the Devs might not have a clue.

Yeah I've heard that theory about what the 7 seconds thing means and I don't have any of my own ideas but tbh it sounds a bit lame to me even though it sort of lends itself to my own theory about Aerith's end and teasing that it can be stopped . I think most of part two is going to be about that; the gang learning that it has happened before, but they're still ultimately powerless to change what happens. And I think that's going to be somewhat in the background with the immediate story beats as they go from location to location playing out much the same as the original. I mean let's not forget that most of what happens at this point in the original is pretty incidental anyway as they just pass through towns following Sephiroth. I simply don't see how they could change it too much without majorly changing the physical game world and I don't know how or why they would do that. Even if I'm wrong and things do end up changing wildly I don't think we'll see that come to any real fruition until part 3.

I played FF7 remake when it first came out (I did enjoy it for the most part although the ending did drag a bit with endless boss battles).
I notice Intergrade is on PS+, has anyone played both and consider it worthwhile to go again? Would I even notice anything different other than better visuals? (I hear that Yuffie is in it for example?).

the yuffie dlc is playable separately, so no need to plough through the whole thing if you don't fancy it - well worth a playthrough as well
the upgrade is noticeable but i wouldn't say it's a massive gamechanger
being on plus, it's free anyway, so downloa it and enjoy yuffie & fort condor...
