Speaking of Red XIII, I'm having real trouble with his main special ability. It just fills up when you take damage while blocking doesn't it? The thing is I hardly ever block, I'm a dodge roll all over the place guy...
I've got provoke equipped as well as the various materia that improve blocking so I'm sure my build is OK, but I'm just too dumb to use it properly. Every time I think "now is a good time to build that meter" I start blocking but then every enemy in the entire game decides that Red XIII doesn't exist and instead focus on my other party members. This is of course despite every other time enemies always, always attacking the player character and ignoring the others

Actually LOL'd at a certain moment on the Junon ship. Was it Barret sadly singing the game over music after you beat him at QB? Whilst I did chuckle at that bit it was actually the bit with Red dressed in the Shinra uniform, the animation and the way he lifted his legs up to cross them really tickled me

I really enjoyed the ship. Genius game planning to expand it into a proper passenger ship and hold a card tournament on it.
I remember approaching the ship and assuming it must have been just set dressing and I tried to get on the cargo ship that was next to it

With Red it feels like building a positive flow with perfect guards (helped by the materia that makes the timing easier) and then cashing in the revenge gauge to strengthen skills as you build up ATB. There have been plenty times where a well timed block will knock an enemy on its arse and then you just completely overpower them as you turn into a rapidly spinning saw blade regenerating health constantly.

85 hours and done. Despite the genuine affection I have for what I've just played, it is 30% too much in almost every aspect - final dungeon is very guilty of this. Some difficulty spikes can feel punishingly unfair, particularly if you use some old-head OG FF7 logic towards the end... The compulsory nature of most of the minigames when they first show up is aggravating (looking at you 3D Brawler in the Saucer - it took what should have been a very hype opening to a memorable section and mired it in frustration). Towers in open/semi-open world games need to be taken out back and shot. The game already gave more than enough incentive to explore the environments, like following the owls for lifesprings and crystals for summons. By the time I reached Corel, I was finding things by myself and leaving the tower unlocks for the end. I much preferred finding the chocobo stops and it feels to me that they already kinda understood how to draw you through the environments and the towers just weren't needed.
That said, it was a fantastic game. I will be going back for a more leisurely playthrough in due course. There were so many stand-out moments. The story beats mostly landed well, and I think the work they did on Cait Sith was especially noticeable. His whole arc felt way more earned here, instead of how poorly it was handled in the original. The love-in with the Shinra troopers in Junon was a lot of fun. Johnny was a bro (were bros?) and although it felt jarring at the time, giving the Gi tribe more focus was cool, because of the parallel to be drawn with Jenova.
At the end, you get a nice suite of extra options, like the ability to replay the Gold Saucer chapters and choose which dates you have, regardless of their personal ratings with Cloud. On that note, Tifa finished on 69% approval. Nice.

Invincible too while don t the spinning blade thing. I took Titan down in the combat simulator using it (Syphon Fang I think it’s called). It went on forever - the rest of the party were long dead.

Hoping to start this at the weekend, should be finishing Persona 3 Reload tomorrow if all goes according to plan.
That's going to be an exceptionally hard act to follow...

Realised you can 100% each area without needing upgrades, I just wasn’t searching hard enough. Went back and smashed the last bits out

The scope of the game keeps surprising me. I really wasn't expecting Gongaga to be a whole fleshed out region. The town is completely optional in the original!
It took long enough, but I really feel like they have finally nailed what the template for a modern Final Fantasy should be.

After 65 hours I feel like I’m just about ready to push on to the end, I must admit.

It took less than an hour before the first "squeeze through a tight space" bit that plagued the last game. Urgh.

Ha you've got absolutely nothing to worry about if tight spaces are your concern

Grunts are definately way less. They also toned down the battle chatter, even when it was a clear re-use of existing lines from Remake.
For example, Barret will still occasionally say "Did ya see me in action?" at the end of a fight, which Cloud no longer follows up with "Must've missed it."

48hrs in and just arrived at Gold Saucer, still loving it but they really did go overboard with the minigames, it's a good thing they're all of a pretty decent quality so far.

I've barely had the chance to play much last week, or the weekend I've got to chapter 2, and really enjoying it so far.

Finished this yesterday, clock was at about 92 hours. The end part is still sinking in a bit but I think that’s the most game I’ve seen in a game for a very long time.
Also I want to get the soundtrack; hopefully once it’s on iTunes they do a double pack with the original as I don’t think I can justify getting both of the CD soundtracks which are a combined 15 discs.

Agree that they're all of decent quality. Some more so than others though. I have made it a personal rule not to chase top marks on any of them unless I'm really having a blast because I know I'll find myself stuck on one for hours and decidedly not enjoying myself. This rule got written somewhere around the frog minigame... Chocobo Racing is actually really good though. I haven't been back yet but I expect (and hope) you can play it repeatedly. It's flagrantly Mario Kart... "inspired".

Something about Yuffie that took me way to long to figure out - her elemental Ninjitsu thing; all of the elements are available from the get go. You have to highlight the ability and press left or right to scroll through them.
I was wondering why I wasn't finding a way to unlock the other elements...

I hate to say this. But I'm finding Aerith to be my least favourite character in battle. She clearly wants to be a heavy magic user but her ATB bar fills soooo slowly.
I know she's a defence monster too but hardly any situations call for it (plus I never remember to use any of it)

Yuffie is a monster, especially with some of her later skills.

I didn’t see this til after I’d finished the game but the trick with Aerith from what I read is basically use the synergy attacks (the R1 ones) to build up her ATB faster, then lay out wards while using Tempest to keep your little casting buddy up. Then you become a mobile magic powered turret that can warp away from danger instantly when needed. Takes too long to build up on a standard fight though.
