Show continues to have some great shots and feels like it's all set up for a proper war in S3.
And then another 2 year wait..

I cannot be the only one who says "Parklife" every time Phil Daniels appears onscreen in this.

More iconic as Jimmy IMO but yeah he stands out.
The beginning scene on the beach was an amazing shot.
I thought it was a really good episode, although we are doing a rewatch of Game of Thrones and it does feel like there’s a lot less at stake and a lot less mysticism going on compared to that.

That was a big expensive episode for sure. Some of the best shots all series too and nice developments. Sad to see the finale next week knowing we'll prob have to wait 2 more years.

I cannot believe that I have watched seven episodes, and do not know whom half the characters are, nor why I should pay attention. I looks great, and hits a lot of the right beats, but nothing is quite so engaging.

Hmmm. I don’t disagree with that necessarily. Especially with the kids. Like I know who Daemon’s kids are, but not their names, and so only know Alice River’s name from reading it - and I still don’t get what she is! I think it’s much more compressed than Game of Thrones was (until the end) and anybody connected to a royal house has a Valyrian name which are not easy to remember. In Game of Thrones a lot of the names were either slight adjustments to names we are familiar with, or had familiar sounds.
It’s also been taxing returning to traditional weekly viewing for this stuff. I couldn’t for the life of me remember why the kids (again I can’t remember any of their names) were apparently being evicted from The Eyrie.

Well that was a cracker of an episode - really enjoyed this season, even though I sometimes have probs tracking who’s who, but that’s always been a Game Of Thrones thing. Lots of names. Lots of people.
I do find I go and watch the episode recap on Emergency Awesome straight afterwards; although he can do the book wanker stuff so you have to be careful.

I also get a bit confused with the which kid is which and the Daemon storyline is interesting but I'm unclear on the specifics of the river people rivalry or what's happening in the Eyrie.
However I got satisfaction from realising that the pub bloke who became the last dragon rider is New Man from Phoneshop.

It was bothering me for a while where I'd seen him before, until I realised he was one of the Lister worshipping cats in Red Dwarf: The Promised Land.

[/quote] Came here to say that. Come a long way from Sutton high street. Really hope he doesn’t become a comedy dragon rider with a farting dragon that drinks too much wine. It’s been an odd series. It has a direction, but I feel like we could have covered it in six episodes.

That was some top dragonning imo. Also get confused/couldn't remember what was going on at the Eerie but then Dragons, so don't care.
Emma D'Arcy is by far the best thing in it. Really good imo.

I've really enjoyed it, although took me a couple of episodes to get settled back into all the characters and their various machinations.
I would say it could have benefitted from each episode being a little tighter. None of them needed to be over an hour and could have had 10 mins or so trimmed out of each episode. Episodes 5 and 6 possibly could have been combined, but I don't think any have been uneventful, which is the main complaint I see.
I don't know the book this is based on, but I suspect they are padding out the story. Maybe it would have been better if they had have just planned 2 or 3 seasons and then done, but I'm pretty happy with what we are getting.

Does anyone else’s heart drop when the scene shifts to Matt Smith?
Some progress this week at least. That Tully kid was ace.

I do a bit. Matt Smith is great and particularly good as Daemon, but his story has been on hold for most the season and his moments have been really tedious. Last episode did move things along though and that was a great moment, albeit more because of the young Tully rather than Matt Smith.

+1. It's dull and I don't care about him, Alice Rivers or the riverlands.

The issue they have is the book isn't really a book like what Thrones was based on but instead done as a scholarly on the family history. I think the original idea was 3 seasons but Martin is adamant they need 4. But he also wanted them to spend more time on King Jaehaerys I(paddy's dad) before going on to how the show started. The Daemon nightmares this season could easily have been just 2 episodes

Good stuff though it could have easily been 6 episodes. I get people wanted/expected a battle but still silly to see the final getting review bombed. Still feels at times that they are trying to make Thrones non canon. At least the last couple seasons.

I thought it was a good episode but not necessarily the best finale. It does seem like it will get better reception when all seasons are released and can be watched together rather than waiting 2 years for the next part. They've confirmed it will be 4 seasons total too. Still, the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is out next year. Looking forward to those who think HOTD is too slow to see their reception to it. Really could have done without the Dany/White Walker vision tbh. I know its the main threadline to connect it to what has come originally but seemed a bit too in your face.

Yeah, wasn't subtle at all. It was OK, some decent politicking, and there was never going to be a battle in the last episode. Not enough time.

The scene in question was cheesy, not as cheesy as Daenerys framed by dragon wings mind. Hate to admit it but I did get some goosebumps when her theme - THAT theme - got a little excerpt in the music. It also really reminded me of the dead marshes in LOTR. I’m also convinced Harrenhal stuff has been influenced by Souls games. I haven’t minded the Daemon stuff myself, I just find him inately interesting. Two years will be a long wait.

Good thing is we have Knight of the Seven Kingdoms next year.
But the long gaps do make it harder to remember everything even with the recaps.

That’s why you do a full rewatch timed to end the weekend it releases. Has always been the way for me. We’re currently on a rewatch of Game of Thrones. It’s great to be able to just have it all and get through it. Just started season 5 so it’s still great too. It really was a superb show before it jumped the shark a bit.

S5 is where alarm bells started going for me. Making Jamie's storyline to faff around in Dorne with terrible fight choreography and even worse dialogue, "You want the good girl, but you need the bad pussy". First time there was an original story from these writers and it was terrible.

S5 was a drop in quality, but it was definitely S6 where the rot really set in. Still maintain that S7 was the worst season. S8 had some rubbish individual moments, but had some great moments too (mostly in the first couple of episodes). S7 felt like they had decided they were going to start an any% speed run.

Yeah 5 is when it starts to fall apart.
They completely botched Arya and the Faceless Men in S6 as well.
But Dorne was a complete mess.

Yes and I don't want to be the "Um actually" kind of guy but if you're Arya, getting stabbed like 3 times in the stomach, enough to have the knife twist even and then falling into a river flowing through the city...in GOT setting you're 100% dead from the stabs or infection.

Yeah she should have died from that. They really started going Marvel like with characters from S6.
Also still annoyed at no Stoneheart but they would have ultimately messed it up.
