Oh and wrt to the above point about DJing, Spotify removed API support for most (all?) third party software so tidal is the only game in town for streaming on a lot of DJ apps.

There's a few things get on my nerves with Tidal but I'm pretty much used to it now. They absolutely nail the daily recommendations thing for me too.

Yeah, its fine. There are a few features it has over spotify, its curation is good and Im happy to not have to navigate around podcasts.
The only thing I really miss is being able to use any app to control the one thats playing. Like if Im listening to the desktop app, I can control that with my phone and so on.

It's all so bloody annoying, but at least the competition here is on price and UX rather than content. And even the price points aren't massively different, just a few quid here or there which is enough to say "fuck it".

Day 1 of Tidal trial and for my needs so far so good. I like generated mixes but on Spotify they've turned to garbage as you can't remove or ban songs from playing on them (especially on desktop) and on tidal they have a button that can remove either the artist entirely or just that one song, on both desktop and the app. And once you say to remove it the song is immediately removed from the mix so it won't even play, that doesn't happen in Spotify at all.

Presumably because so many people pay to get on playlists.

It would explain why the same shite keeps ending up on them.

The user created playlists are always much better imo.

Now I feel bad that I just stream all the albums that I already have downloaded or on cd.

I really feel like a dinosaur when reading people's comments on Spotify, I stream in order to listen to new music then buy what I want (vinyl and download), I will have a playlist of music to have on in the background when socialising and that's it. I have no understanding of what people are on about, DJing using Spotify, WTF? As for a service that tries to push shit on you, it can GTF. /Grumpy old man.

I tend to just have one main 1000+ song playlist on shuffle most of the time, but Tidal seems incapable of actually downloading it and just shits the bed any time I try to use offline mode.

That was me, I just throw everything I like into one list that hit 4,000 songs on Spotify. I actually quite liked losing that and starting over on Tidal, it is refreshing.

I’ve hopped around between all the services over the years and I always end up back at Apple Music. I think it’s because it’s a half decent interface and feels more focused on albums than playlists which is how I prefer to listen.
I’m not that bothered by the collaborative bits and the Spotify interface is horrible, I didn’t get on with the tidal one either but that could be lack of use and I can’t be bothered.

That’s a good point. Spotify caches songs (either recently listened to or most listened to. Never worked out which) so it copes with connection drops really well.
As far as I can tell, Tidal doesn’t and just dies if you hit a black spot.

Now I feel bad that I just stream all the albums that I already have downloaded or on cd. Why do you do that? Not have your digital collection able to be streamed? I have about 60gb of music on my home pc, but that all stops around 2007/2008 because I haven't bought any music since then.
I also have about 30Gb of that on my mobile on the sd card.
But I can just open up spotify on the same pc, and access any song ever made, including those ones and also other ones, in less time than it takes to boot up Media Monkey and look for the downloaded version. Plus I then get to discover new music related to those.
It's mainly the convenience of having everything in one place, a bit like Steam or Netflix (as it used to be).
I have some games on Steam that I also have on dvd or other services, but I'm most likely to play them on steam.
I have some tv shows and movies on dvd as well, but if they're on streaming then I'm more likely to be reminded about them.
Maybe memory is a big part of it... I forget what I have on the services that I'm not using regularly.

You *could* set it up to be as convenient but it would be quite a faff and load of work getting there.

As others have said, when I’m driving and stuff, I usually just have one gigantic playlist on.
I did used to have one ‘black hole’ playlist which I kept downloaded but Spotify was good at coping with that so gave up. Might have to start doing that again.

@bill Same. Even with stuff not available everywhere (TV and film), it's getting annoying trying to remember which service I've bought the thing on.

I always start playing music and skip a couple of tracks, then swear and start walking back to WiFi range in silence. Neighbours must think I'm mental. Started a separate emergency playlist that seems to be coping OK so far.

Oh yeah, I have found this. It downloads some but not others. Offline mode still works fine with what's available though. I assumed it was something to do with space as the filesizes will be larger than Spotify as it's lossless but, to be honest, I haven't cared enough to troubleshoot it. There's enough downloaded that I've got stuff I like to listen to on the rare occasion I have no connection

I work in a black hole and just click download on anything I want to play later. Seems to work well so far. Mixes have been better than Spotify so far.
