Theees rumours of Spotify cancelling Rogan and claiming they mistakenly thought they’d done a deal for Wogan

"this is who the right is defending."
Yes, of course it is. These are exactly the type of people they always defend.

He's had a giggle about sexual assault and forced blowjobs his mates got in the good old comedy club days as well, but it was in the good old days.

Spotify knew what they were paying for when they signed him. I don’t follow him or what he gets up to and I know he says and pushes things that are ‘controversial’ (being generous).

It is mental that his fans will listen to three hour podcasts. In radio terms, Howard Stern (who is as woke as Howard Stern could be, these days) used to justify his outlandish salary because his listeners would tune in for an entire hour rather than the few mins the average is. Rogan's will listen to hours of random bullshit. He's an advertiser's dream.

Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) seem to have joined them. Not sure if Young counts double. There was a BBC story on it a couple of days ago that said something like "Young and Joni lead a procession of artists leaving spotify" but no indication if there was anyone else in the procession. India Arie is leaving too, which is good because it reminded me to check out her stuff. (I've only seen her on Sesame Street ) Oh, and Stewart Lee. I notice he's trending on Tidal I noticed Apple Music had big front page banners saying 'Neil lives here' and 'Joni lives here' a few days back

CSN(&Y) going will definitely make my colleague quit Spotify, Joni Mitchell nearly made him quit already.

And that is me on the bandwagon. Spotify cancelled, joined tidal. Fucking pain cancelling Spotify. Have to contact support, support give links that don’t work, back to support, 15 minutes of waiting… Bit late now but it's easier if you downgrade your premium account to free and then cancel the free account. You don't need to contact anyone except a bot, takes a few minutes
Anyway, closed account, deleted app. Still had until end of Feb on Spotify but fuck it, it sends a message

Yeah, I didn't go as far as deleting my account. Just downgraded to free and made sure to give a reason why.

If I can just get in on the virtue signalling for a moment, I too have just cancelled my subscription. It was fairly painless to transfer my playlists over to Amazon music with the thing they recommend. Though it did cost a couple of quid to subscribe to it to get them all over.
It's been a while since I've used it but the UI seems a bit better.

Like I’ve said before, I was thinking about quitting for a while because it’s been 12 months since they announced a hi res service and have delivered nothing while all of their competitors offer one for the same price or less. I’m not really down with being ripped off but the last time I tried to switch, it was a pain in the arse.
What this Neil Young thing brought to light is that you can port your library in minutes so you aren’t forced to be loyal to anyone anymore.

I did it because people had been saying Spotify are generaly arseholes and a suitable alternative was presented to me so I could lazily make a stand about something I've known about for 5 minutes. Power to the people

Yeah, I’m all for low effort boycotts. Six years since I’ve been in a Wetherspoons and counting.

Yeah, I'm pretty weak willed... Had an LG TV years ago and swore off ever buying anything of theirs again due to how shit they were at supporting it when it developed a fault. Got a nice new LG monitor last year!
I'll probably scuttle back to Spotify in a few months if they get rid of Rogan. YT Music is already getting on my tits.

Yeah I'm transferring everything over to tidal now to give that a go too. Interestingly it only transferred the playlists I'd made myself to Amazon music, while this is bringing all the Spotify playlists I've added to my library too.

Tidal is basically a clone of Spotify now with better music. Tidal connect works perfectly with my Sonos speakers and, after a week of playing music, it’s recommending more or less the same stuff as spotify would.
I can’t see me switching back unless they start recommending Screwdriver or something.

£20 a month seems a bit steep for Ultra Hifi thing though.

I thought about it. The direct payment thing is good but the only thing I have that will resolve that tier of music is my headphone DAC. Sonos tops out at the Hifi tier which is still a significant upgrade on Spotify, so I subbed to that one.

I thought a key part of the Font Geek constitution, not to mention a requirement to post here, was being an out-of-touch old fart who doesn't mess around with whatever newfangled nonsense "the kids" are doing these days.
Am I really the only one here who doesn't use Spotify/Tidal/Apple/etc., and instead purchases music on CD and vinyl as the Flying Spaghetti Monster intended?

It took me a long time to transition, but carrying around a phone packed full of music or a separate device just for music soon becomes a pain in the arse. I've always loved having a huge amount of music at my fingertips and just chucking it on shuffle. That worked well when you had iPods with chunky storage, but not so well on phones.
I transitioned from CDs to MP3 a long time ago, though. If you never made that jump them I can understand Spotify etc not making much sense.

I buy the music I really like on vinyl and I find that on Spotify/Tidal.
Except for a few of my mates who release on bandcamp and come at me every few months to buy their shit like a kid with a sponsored walk form. So I have a bandcamp account full of stuff from like four people that I never listen to.

A big chunk of the forum demographic (early 80s / late 70s kids) would have been the Napster generation (teens/early 20s at the time), and the first to have MP3 players. (Creative Zen mofos!!!)
I find it strange people stuck with physical discs (vinyl people are even weirder), when streaming is soooo easy and instantly accessible on almost any device, and a natural progression from mp3s.
I think I might have to wait until tidal properly works on UK Alexa, as that is where I play all my music... I have messed around before with changing locations and it is a real pain in the ass with random bugs.
