It's moments like this when you realise just how working class your family was growing up, white bread with margarine with any meal that had chips. Chip sarny went with any meal. Stork margarine?

I've never been sure whether a) tinned spaghetti (e.g. spaghetti hoops) on toast and b) tinned tomatoes on toast were a my parents thing or pretty normal? Yep, plus ravioli, macaroni cheese, curried beans. And mushrooms! Mushrooms on toast are lovely.

Spaghetti is just a beans alternative. Wouldn't tomatoes just make the toast really soggy?

Banana chilli is nice. It's a Swedish dish, called Flying Jacob.

Just remembered we used to make our own pizzas using white bread, ketchup and cheese under the grill that we had to light with a match as the igniter broke 5 years ago.
... I've got something in my eye, excuse me!

All my childhood star wars figures are, to this day, stored in stork margarine tubs. We took the margarine out first.

I've got something in my eye, excuse me! At the risk of derailing away from the core food discussion, this has reminded me that we used to have Christmas crackers made out of toilet roll middles and wrapping paper.
And we still weren't allowed to pull them - we had to unwrap them carefully so they could be reconstructed to be used again the next year.

Oh, crisp butties an’ all!
Now, I’ll put crisps ON AN EXISTING SANDWICH, e.g. cheese, ham, etc.
But my brother in law eats just crisps on bread and butter.
Tinned potatoes are far better, but, like you all, he just won’t listen.

The worst I've seen food wise on here is Zom's Xmas monstrosity he calls a sandwich.
Closely followed by Quaddy's salad cream curry thing he does.

My other half would probably kick me out of the house if I did. I relived my yoof just before christmas with a Chicken Pot Noodle sandwich. I used to sit out the kitchen watching Robot Wars, Red Dwarf and Rab C Nesbitt on the portable we had out there and one day instead of dunking my bread and butter into the Pot Noodle "sauce" i just scooped a load of noodles onto the bread and had a sandwich. Culinary. Genius. Me.
I'm going to have to try a chow-mein sarnie sometime soon.

The whole 'bread and butter with your tea' thing really is a true British working class institution isn't it? It was definitely a staple in my home, especially with Friday dinner from the chippy. Genuinely forgotten until this discussion that we used to have bread and butter with every meal.
Had also forgotten that when I first started eating meals with my now-wife she (later divulged) she used to be offended that on the occasions she cooked something I'd immediately put bread and butter in the middle of the table to go with it. She took it as me thinking "fuck me, look at that crap, I'll just eat bread instead", whereas to me it was just a natural/obvious/unspoken given that you have bread with a meal. And bread and gravy for any meal with gravy. So probably half my meals growing up. It's heavenly and my go to meal when feeling poorly.

I genuinely eat pie sandwiches. I’m sorry. As a kid, mainly due to reasons of impoverishment, we had bread and butter with pretty much every meal. I got into the habit of “Everything Sandwiches” - a bit of everything from your plate in folded bread and butter. So, fish, chips and mushy peas sandwiches, and so on. Sunday roast; the lot! Yep that was me too. I’ll literally put any type of food between two pieces of bread and butter. A particular low point was pot noodles as a student 👍
