The whole 'bread and butter with your tea' thing really is a true British working class institution isn't it? It was definitely a staple in my home, especially with Friday dinner from the chippy. I think bread and butter may well be a gift from the gods. I've eaten full loaves of toast and butter with a side of bread and butter! |

Muffin, unless it isn't actually a muffin and is instead what I tend to think of now as a bog standard roll (from having lived down south too much). WTF kind of answer is that. May as well say "elephant, unless it isn't actually an elephant". (Oven bottom) muffin not the cake variety - its a type of roll/bap and nine times out if ten it's the name used in Oldham. 1/10 its a bap or roll. |

Had also forgotten that when I first started eating meals with my now-wife she (later divulged) she used to be offended that on the occasions she cooked something I'd immediately put bread and butter in the middle of the table to go with it. She took it as me thinking "fuck me, look at that crap, I'll just eat bread instead", whereas to me it was just a natural/obvious/unspoken given that you have bread with a meal. |
