If I can offer a crumb of comfort...
The last few years with my ex were incredibly difficult and I found myself drinking excessively because I had nothing else in life to look forward to. Parting ways has been painful but in hindsight I should've left years ago and I'm both fitter and happier now than I have been for a very long time.
I hope your journey plays out even better than mine, Danno. Wishing you strength.

My struggles seem pretty trivial and nothingy, so do feel kind of embarrassed giving any kind of update really, but managed to go two days without drinking. I've realised that work is a large factor in my wanting a drink.
If I have work the next day I just feel very anxious and stressed at the thought of work.
Also explains why I didn't really drink much over Christmas.

Ive tried to cut down on my drinking recently. Not exactly binge drinking but drinking more than I would like to admit to a doctor every night.
The choice was validated when I got 5 bottles of gin and a small keg of beer for christmas. When gin becomes the new lynx africa gift set, you probably need to have a life audit.

Looking at the positives though, gin does make a passable bodyspray.

Don't worry Danno, you sound like you are actually in a pretty decent place and are just getting your head around it all. Just make sure you don't have a 'what the hell' moment where a small treat/slip means you think, bugger it, I've messed everything up so may as well dive in fully now etc. Better to look at any bumps in the road as exactly that, little hiccups that have now passed and you are back on the path you want to be on.

I'm going to try and get a speedrun on Factorio, like an official one, I reckon I could do it.

Only way I managed to give up smoking was not to think “this is the last one”, but to think “I’ll have a smoke next week“ and that process of saying I could have one, just not yet, made it work.
I kept putting it off until I made a big event of the Reading festival which was 6 months away. It was going to be a smoking and having fun weekend. By the time it was 6 months down the line I didn’t want one. That was 14 years ago.
Jam tomorrow !

A whole lot of little things over a long time become one big thing in the end and its the end result which screws you up. I get told off for belittling my problems. so sount yourself in that group now... or count yourself in that group as I can't type it seems. I get anxious with work. Do you have any leave that you can take? Are you exercising to help offload? Are you meditating? Are you doing anything to destress? Try (easier said than done) on your off days to remember that right then and there, there is nothign wrong and everythign is alright. Tomorrow might be work, but worrying about it won't change that. Play a game or go outside or do some PMR (progressive muscle relaxation). But give yourself a break. The modern day information heavy life is difficult and stressful. The pandemic and brexit and job insecurity are all causing real problems to people's mental health (and physical health). Well done on the two days. That's two more than you'd have managed without trying. Maybe next time you can get three, or maybe 2 again. Even 1 is a bonus. Funnily enough I didn't have a migraine until the day before I was due back from Xmas leave.. so I can relate. Now I really must get some food.

Just drank a bottle of wine so I guess I broke my resolution already.
I mean to be fair myself, I have another 11 and 1/2 months to get back on track, but it's maybe not the best sign that two weeks in I'm already drinking again.

I have fallen off twice, so you did better than me. Once after a hellish day taking mum to hospital (pre-op check, but 9 and a half hours with my mum will do that to anyone) and on Saturday when I met my brother in the pub to discuss what to about the old dear (he's a lush, pub is the only time I can reach him.

Turns out my intention to only have one glass of whisky last night was a bit of an hilariously incorrect intention.

I think I just need to accept I really shouldn't drink by myself. I bought a bottle of whisky as a belated birthday gift, and thought I'll have a glass whilst watching a bit more if the Expanse, then get an early night.
Ended up drinking approx half the bottle, and staying up until 2 watching utter crap on YouTube and exploring artists on Bandcamp.
Going to try and get back onto the wagon

I didn't make any specific resolutions, but was already planning on cutting down drinking a bit more as I'm already at weekends only, but that pretty much always ends up being three days on the trot.
Had a single glass of whiskey on Friday that lasted me through most of Eternals and I didn't feel the need to get a top up after. Then a heavyish night on Saturday (5 beers and a whiskey) and nothing on Sunday. Quite pleased with that, and I don't seem to have the early week sleep disruption that I always seem to get on the first few dry nights after a few days of drinking.

Good work. Likewise, not made any firm resolutions but when I have relaxed a bit, going to try and avoid reaching for the wine every time, especially if there's no social thing. Far too easy to drink too much. Beer and gin I only really want a couple of each and can happily stop. Wine is too moreish.

I want to make a Mowgli joke that isn't related to soiling a chair but that's the only thing about him I can remember. He had so many dramas but they've all been eclipsed, at least in my memory.

Imagine soiling a chair being your lasting legacy.
I mean, it's only a legacy almongst a small group of old nerds.
But still, what a legacy.

The trick is to have so many outrageous incidents that nobody knows what to tag you with, so that by the time "Boozy Danno" is starting to stick, folk are already blabbering about "Gravy rug muncher"

I wonder what happened to the chair itself? Maybe they'll interview it on EG Premium one day.

Just a little vote in confidence to all my fellow addicts of whatever it is you're trying to bin off. Stick in there! This no named fool on the internet believes in you! Whilst not for NY resolution last year I decided to drastically reduce my fondness for the devils lettuce. It was a huge problem of mine and something I had used for over half of my life. Found out my partner was pregnant in August (which was a surprise as due to the amount I was smoking I was sure I would be impotent. Turns out Cannabis is not a contraceptive) and after having a crazy August where I smoked a silly amount I decided enough was enough and that I'd go a few months without smoking. My first plan was a month, then I ended up extending it to just over 3 months, which was the longest I've ever gone since being 14/15 without smoking a thing. I had some on my birthday and the weekend after, which after the F1 farce I really needed but since the 12th of December I've been 'clean'. It's not that I never intend to do it again as it is something I enjoy, I just needed to get a grip on my use and having a baby on the way made me speed up that decision. I very much have an addicts personality so it does help that in September I bought a road bike and I've got fully into that and it's been all consuming for me but it helps that I have something to divert my attention to. That's my main bit of advice for anyone trying to cutback or give something up. Use your addictive mentality to your advantage and pour it into something else I believe in you
