Don't overthink things Danno. Just remember why you're doing this and what your desired end state is. Anything else is just mental chatter (which will get louder).

Drinking water is excellent advice.
When I was cutting down on my drinking I'd just pour myself a glass of carbonated water. Turns out having a glass nearby I'd sip out of throughout the evening was a huge part of the habit.
When I'm going out now, if I manage to keep my wits about me (and that's a big if) I start pouring myself water after a point. I still spend the night hammered, but not excessively so.

Make a friend, like a real connection with someone Start a social hobby, a group class or something Play multiplayer games with my wife, we realised that whilst we spend a lot of time in the same space we don't actually do anything together. Not even watch series', so we're trying to fix that.

Learn synthesis more and start creating tracks/albums. And do more gigs with the band. Music in general I guess.
I've got a 2 year plan to reduce most of my debts so that'll have to wait another year.
However, first I have to bury my mum next to dad, so it's not exactly a great start but then, when is it ever

I pretty much cracked regular exercising and eating better last year so I'm going to try and be more positive this year. Could be a challenge.

You and me both Sarfrin. I looked at photos of myself recently and I'm not smiling in way too many of them. I'm always worrying and expecting the sky to fall on me.
Hope you have a great year.

Currently in crippling pain with back spasms (unrelated)

Well done Danno. Been there (Day 1) many times in the past. Each time you get a day under your belt is a day in the right direction. Good on you.
I had caffeine today... Don't touch the stuff usually. Can't sleep...

I would like to actually try and get a bit more in shape. Don't really care if I have a 6 pack or are ripped, not really something I aspire to but would gladly lose a few inches from my gut. Just need to stop regularly drinking imperial strength stouts and porters, and do a bit more exercise *or* keep drinking and do a fair bit more exercise. Not sure which I find less appealing. Maybe I should just switch to gin and vodka for a few months, should be less calorific. So, day 2 of 2022 and I'm appear to be drinking an imperial stout and ramming chocolate truffles into my mouth hole. In some ways though it feels like these are the last days of decadence, before returning to work on Tuesday, kind of feels like thats when the new year really starts. Really do need to do better though, this gut is less than ideal.

Tomorrow is the last day of the holidays for me so tonight is de facto the last Saturday night of the holidays. One more chance to indulge!

This stuff reminds me of the maxim that we perennially overestimate what we can do in the short term, and underestimate what we can do long term. See also, humans as being terrible at exponential growth. If we can make a little difference week on week, month on month. It adds up to major change over 5, 10 years.

5-10 years!?!?
See, the problem is, I can't even comprehend that far in the future. That doesn't mean I don't intend to try and change habits, but having a goal more than, say, a year in advance seems to be totally unimageable to me.

At my age, planning 5-10 years in the future is getting cocky 🙂

That doesn't mean I don't intend to try and change habits, but having a goal more than, say, a year in advance seems to be totally unimageable to me. Yeah, I can't relate to something that far ahead. I've only been successful when I've framed things in terms of doing something for a number of weeks. Even then I break it down to 'I'll do this exercise tomorrow and I'll eat this for lunch tomorrow.' Doing something consistently for a long time seems like an impossible effort but I find I can do it if I pretend I'm not committing to something that big.

No need to have an actual clear goal! Just know that small things add up to big things, and not to be disappointed if those small things feel not enough or insufficient in the moment.

The 5-10 years horizon makes sense. A couple of times in my life I realised I was thinking about doing something 5 or so years ago and decided not to because so many years, only for the years to pass quickly and me being in roughly the same spot still.
Edit: the 5-10 horizon makes sense, but I'm not sure the preceding sentence does.

Thought about this for a while now and it's:
1. Complete my 1000 miles 2. Exercise 4 times a week (keep Pai over 100) 3. Meditate daily 4. Get a job 5. Use the internet and my phone less (I'm addicted). Max 14 hours a week. I'll be reducing my time here obviously. I'm using this place as a crutch. 6. Eat properly three times a day so my blood sugars stop crashing 7. Drink enough water each day (2 litres) 8. Complete my anxiety course 9. Be a better dad and husband (vague and hardly SMART), but it needs to be in the list. 10. Learn an instrument (the violin. Spend two days a week min on this).
5 year plan:
1. Get my kids through school 2. Still be here 3. Be grade 1 in an instrument 4. Be happy and healthy and still married
10 year plan
1. Be happy and healthy and still married
Thought about adding yoga or writing or other things, but that's more than enough things as it is.

10 years is a bit of a stretch beyond surviving that long but 5 is doable.
I look at like where do I see myself in 5 years and how do I make that happen?
Then I panic as reality sets in that to achieve it will require a long list of things to do, learn and spend money on. But it's either do the hard graft and lead by example or just fall back on the tried and true and never realising ones dreams.
Thing is need to make the biggest changes in a couple of years, after 5 I'd really like to of had a couple of years of living that concept and being successful at it.
