So the Pokemon Direct just happened... Fans: "Y'know, after the Gen 4 remake mess we're really worried about the Gen 5 remakes...
Gamefreak: "Alright, we won't make them then*. Have Pokemon Legends Z for Gen 6 instead!"
*(yet?)
Honestly I'll take it! Legends Arceus was my favourite of the latest three, there's a lot of room for improvement on X/Y, it's releasing 2025 so it's probably (hopefully) gonna be on Switch 2's better hardware plus it means they're taking their time with it... This could be great!

A Legends game with a bit more time in the oven, that also doesn't run and look like total shit thanks to the switch 2 would be nice.
No way in hell I'm buying it day 1 though, even if reviews are relatively good.

Ah, I said over in the Switch 2 thread that if there was going to be a launch Pokémon something that a Legend game could be possible. Sounds like that was a good shout.
Didn't actually play the first Legend game, but sounds like it was more interesting than Scarlet/Violet. Another run at it could produce something really good.

Dragon Quest XI, Advance Wars 1 & 2 and Pikmin 4. I’ve decided that unless it’s a small indie game, I have to finish all three of these before buying another major release on this console. Fortunately, it seems like it’s going to be a fairly quiet year from Nintendo, so I have no excuses. I don’t need to replay Luigi’s Mansion 2 and I even have the other Paper Mario game unfinished on my shelf, so I have no excuses for picking up anything else right now.
I really don’t want to be picking up the next Switch with a huge backlog on the old one.

Emulation is always a bit of a grey area, but emulating a current system that you can just walk into Argos and buy seems pretty pitch black. If the switch 2 allows previous gen games to be played at higher frame rates, then that's my only use case for it gone.

There's an ongoing community effort to clear every single remaining Super Mario Maker 1 level before the servers shut down for good at the end of the moth. When uploading levels was stopped in 2021 there was over 250,000 levels uncleared, currently there's less than 170. www.issmmbeatenyet.com/This is the calibre of level that's left to clear:

Lol. Put enough gamers into a community and they'll come up with something dumb to do. Yet somehow kinda cool.

That’s rather wholesome! I really enjoyed Mario Maker. Didn’t bother with the sequel, for reasons unknown, but man if that game had launched the Wii U instead Nintendo might have had some minor success with that console!

I've got a bit of credit and want to give my Switch some loving. I was thinking either Advance Wars or Pikmin 4. I think those are the major releases I've missed. Not sure which one..

Stating the obvious, but they're very different styles of game, it really boils down to which you like best. If you like turn-based tactical stuff, sort of Fire Emblem style but with replaceable forces, Advance Wars is great. It also probably has more content for your buck FWIW (I can't speak for Pikmin, but with Advance Wars combining two games, all their optional content plus a map creator -a greatly expanded one compared to the original, at that-, there's a lot to it)

If you’ve enjoyed any of the previous Pikmin games then 4 improves on them in every way. It’s a brilliant game and was my game of 2023

I haven't played a Pikmin since the original. I remember the original being great fun for a short time, and then getting very repetitive as you were basically just doing the same thing for almost every situation (throwing lots of Pikmin at something). (Also applied to Overlord, which was a Pikmin clone with gremlins)
Have the sequels refined the formula enough to keep things interesting and varied and add some strategy?

That is Pikmin in a nutshell, to be fair. There’s a few decent puzzles thrown in in regards to how to traverse or get your Pikmin across the map and there is a strong completionist vibe to collecting fruit/items. There’s also that Metroidvania style map design in which you’re constantly making mental notes for areas you can yet access or walls that you can’t yet destroy.
For you to enjoy Pikmin, all of that needs to appeal to you at the same time. If any one of those things does not appeal, you’ll probably bounce off them pretty quickly.

Did any of you guys pick up Mario Strikers for Switch? Tempted to get a copy for the kids' Easter present. Is there fun to be had for £25 (secondhand)?

You can get it first hand for £30 at The Game Collection: www.thegamecollection.net/#sqr:(q[Mario%20strikers])It's good fun, but I would only recommend it if you intend to play multiplayer. The single player content is pretty thin.

Super Metroid is 30 years old today, apparently. I think that’s the perfect excuse to replay it. I’ve probably completed it that many times. It never gets old.

It's a great little memory test too if you aim for 100% with a decent time. It's been less than a year since my last playthrough but I'm tempted to have a blast through too.
The perfect rainy afternoon game.

I should hopefully be back to regular old fibre broadband in a month so I can see what all the fuss was about with F-Zero 99.

Likely won’t play it for a month or so as I’m deep into the new FF16 (and playing persona 5 very slowly and replaying Elden ring on the side). Tempted to pick up the new fifa as well. Probably worth a look at £16
