Just cleared Quake 2 PSX, a mod for the Q2 remaster that aims to recreate the original PS1 version campaign. It basically plays like a highly condensed version of the PC game, covering most of the same areas with only 20 maps out of 39 and simplified level layouts. This means the game can now be cleared pretty much in 3 hours. The difficulty however I find to be quite a bit higher than the original, as stronger enemies tend to appear more quickly and more often.
If you are itching for a Q2 replay, this is a nice change of pace.

Did you play either of the other 2 RE remakes? I did! I think the RE2 remake is one of the best games ever. Was an ordeal on my nerves getting through, RE3 less so. RE7 i always chicken out of.

Yeah, 2 is definitely the scariest game I’ve ever played. RE7 isn’t so bad. It definitely starts out that way, but it cools off at the half way point.

Might give it another go, its the first person perspective which gets me, esp when you are being chased or stalked by something. Is the RE4 Ada dlc any good?

A few shmups that are on Steam sale until 4/11. I'll embed gameplay trailers in spoiler tags to save lengthy descriptions of what kind of games they are.
Satazius - 8.5/10Some 3 or 4 euros in the sale. Oldschool Gradius/Darius style shmup (even in 4:3 aspect ratio) by Japanese developer Astro Port which is like 1 or 2 guys or something. First impression on launch wasn't great because you need JoyToKey for proper controller support, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the gameplay. Audiovisually it's pretty basic but gets the job done and it doesn't even bother with a story. What it's great at is gameplay. It doesn't do anything new but just mashes together aforementioned shmups into one coherent package that's just the fun without the bullshit like losing 2 stages worth of powerups upon death. There's still some oldschool stuff like returning to the checkpoint upon death, speed upgrades through powerups and a few cheeky gotcha moments--but hey, you get achievements for getting killed by them. There's 10 continues but I think that's actually a fair amount for this game. It's not a long game and playing through the earlier levels again is fun, so it's not the end of the world to lose. This game is clearly made on a budget but also clearly made by people who understand what they're doing, it doesn't do anything fancy but nails all the fundamentals to deliver a short and sweet straight-to-the-point shmup experience that's full of fun and adrenaline throughout, is excellently paced and never outstays its welcome. Difficulty is (for my non-hardcore taste) challenging but fair. It got me more addicted than most other "bigger" shmups ever did, and genuinely pushed me to increase the difficulty. So far I've beaten hard mode and now I'm struggling with insane difficulty. Playing this convinced me to buy two other Astro Port budget shmups, Wolflame and Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser, discussed below. As I understand, this is also on Switch as part of some shmup collection that contains 3 games from this developer, one of the others being Wolflame. WolflameAnother budget shmup (about €4 in the sale) by the same developer, this one being a Raiden-style vertical one. It's a little more technically accomplished with better graphics and sound quality, it doesn't need JoyToKey, it's longer and more difficult and thankfully has infinite continues and a save system to accommodate. I've only played through once in normal mode, can't really say much else about it other than... it's good fun. Again doing nothing new, just skipping the crap and mashing together a nice no-nonsense package. I'm not as much into this style of shmup as I am into side-scrolling ones but also kept me engaged enough to actually finish it, which I can't actually say about most shmups in general. Supercharged Robot VULKAISERAnd another one for €3. This one's more bullet hell style which isn't really my jam but it's thematically fun because it's like 70s super robot whatever anime. Gameplay is alright I guess but again this is not my kind of game really. Loved the style though. A word of warning, this one doesn't even have a pause function, they say it's intended to be like an oldschool arcade experience. I am not a fan of this, but the game's like 20 minutes long so I think I can just look past that. R-Type Final 2 - 5/10And now to the one "big budget" game in this list. In the sale it's down from a chunky €40 regular price to a still chunky €20. I first had some good nostalgic feelings because, well, it's R-Type, with the good old Force Ball and all. It still comes with old baggage like losing all your precious upgrades on death, memorising stages through endless trial and error, and your ship having a gigantic hurtbox. I always wished R-Type would have got modernised a little like Gradius 5 did, but this is probably one of the most conservative game series of all, so I'm out of luck I guess. However whereas classic games in the series always managed to hook me despite the immense frustrations, this one's just... meh. Most of the stages feel empty and boring, boss fights are drawn out and not much fun, audiovisually it's kinda generic and bland, difficulty fluctuates wildly, with sudden drastic spikes followed by more empty downtime and generally very little that could even be described as a "curve". There are issues with the 2.5D graphics like sometimes it's not clear if and when something moves from the background into the playing plane, and even worse, projectiles are visually obstructed by enemies. Even when it's hard it's never really exciting in a good way. Playing Satazius and Wolflame at the same time really did it no favour because it's outclassed by small €5 games. Just to be fair I replayed some of the classic games for comparison, R-Type 1, 2, 3 and Super, and honestly they're all far better (yes, Super R-Type is a good game if you just enable overclocking in your emulator). They all have much more personality, far more engaging level design, much less snooze downtime, a much more consistent difficulty curve (even if it does get really bullshitty), less drawn out boss fights... I've played through Final 2 three or four times and I don't think I'll return. There are even more ships to try but honestly however I play this game I just want to play the older games instead. So it's not a good look compared to good budget games and not a good look compared to its own predecessors. In my opinion this is not a good game and not worth even the €20 in the sale.

The Ascent (27 hours):
I have already said a few not exactly positive things about it, but in spite of posting over in the "abandoned" thread I did still end up finishing it.
- Beautiful Cyberpunk environments. - Extensive maps that tend to waste the player's time.
- Fast travel through Metro, but stations are few and far between and it only goes between different parts of the the same map.
- Fast travel through Taxis that can just be called anywhere, but it's still restricted in the same way. - Fast travel also results in frequent loading screens.
- Top-down WASD combat with lots of rolling and taking cover. Some cover destructible. - Good choice of upgradable weaponry and augments for special abilities. Not very detailed, but choices are often genuinely different.
- Combat is fun and works well, but there are some difficulty spikes (Megarachnoid!). - Camera is fixed and adjusts based on how the developers thought it was required for a given area, which was a real problem in some engagements. - Enemies' leash range is limited and when they go back to their location they heal up completely (!)
- Story was interesting enough with a few somewhat memorable characters. Lore on the different alien species is interesting...
- ...but Aliens talk exactly like humans. Moment-to-moment dialogue was at best serviceable.
Ultimately it was too laborious to truly recommend as far as I am concerned. Even after some of the toughest fights around midgame, there were some more engagements later on which were a little too much frantic rolling around. Paired with some setbacks from checkpoint placement, it made things become tiresome quickly. Getting around environments being so slow and unnecessarily complicated with too many areas full of enemies, didn't exactly increase my tolerance for this.
The world is beautiful and detailed, but the game does little to support it. The top-down perspective is part of the problem, but it's also that you spend a lot of time in menus and mostly only engage with the quest-giver or trader. It would probably also be easier to enjoy the beauty of the world if the game didn't train the player to regard it as a large place to get around with tons of people and robots to waste. It just takes up too much headspace I think.

Call of duty MW2 single player (the recent one)
After playing blops6 and being mixed on that game, got mw2 cheap and really enjoyed the single player. Played the 1st game of the reboot some time ago and this has better missions. (hated the mission in the first game where you are carrying bricks/breeze blocks) Firing guns and combat was good, some very minor graphical bugs remain still, like floating bush and some lens flare shining though on later level. I think the devs did a great job of mixing up the slower paced missions with the pure combat ones
Its bullshit that sledgehammer did MW3 as they do such a naff job on their games. I get the game started as expansion pack to this game but the game has very few actually missions and MW3 is just warzone maps with objectives as "single player missions". Might try Cold war one next
9/10 for MW2 single player

36. Nodebuster - PC - Oct 2 - 3/5
Nice little idle-ish game with some nice sparkly effects near the end. Too short though, could have done with some more resets.
37. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - PC - Oct 10 - 3/5
Good, with some nice weapon ideas, but you can really feel the formula straining at the edges by the end. Fun to run a comparison with Bloodstained afterwards though!
38. The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki - PS5 - Nov 4 - 1/5
Just fuck off with this. 13 games in, three games into the current ‘series’ and we have 80 hours of people “talking” about “things” in “inverted commas” and “endless memory tests” because instead of introducing something new they hint at things being related to things in previous games without saying. The entire game is spent driving towards the fireworks factory and just as it’s about to arrive the car crests a hill and goes deep, deep into a big tunnel. Also your car changes colour and was actually a guy in the back seat who is a magic car robot person.
And that ending. Might be the worst one yet, even worse than Cold Steel 3, which literally just stops with a loud bang halfway through a long, droning speech.
If you’re considering playing Daybreak, don’t. After the shitness of Daybreak 2’s completely inconsequential plot, this doesn’t take things any further and just isn’t worth your time.

Astro Bot (PS5, obviously)
Not sure much more needs to be said about this game. It was an absolute joy from start to finish (and very probably beyond, as I’m definitely going to play on for the Platinum trophy and 100% completion).
Gorgeous visuals, great music, plenty of humour and brilliant fan service in all the Bots of PlayStation game heroes, heroines and villains past and present.
It’s not a hard game overall, but some of the “shape” (PlayStation button symbol) levels are surprisingly tricky. Great content to test completionists but unlikely to be a roadblock for most. The difficulty and challenge of the platforming, combat, puzzles and boss battles is really well judged.
I also love how inventive the game is - it’s right up there with the best Mario games for throwing something utterly inspired into the mix, sometimes for just one level, before moving on to the next delightful special ability. If any future DLC just offered more of some of those cool concepts, it’d be a must buy - the possibility of more new things is as exciting as any new game gets.
Anyway, it’s basically fantastic. GOTY.
10/10

Fun little Crash/Donky Kong inspired game. Pretty easy to complete the main game though getting 100% will take time and some skill.

Withering Rooms (PC)
What if Bloodborne were a 2D roguelike with spells? That is Withering Rooms in a nutshell, and it's really good. Don't expect as fast-paced or polished a combat system as in From's games, but there's lots of potential for different builds, and there's a bunch of places to discover and explore. And it all takes places in some messed up environments, pretty Silent Hill-ish at points. Oh, for a dash of Eternal Darkness, try going around while your curse level is high. It helps that there is equipment that rewards you for doing exactly that.

Tomb Raider 1 Remastered
Just finished the game and I had a great time revisiting it. The ability to switch between old and new graphics was surprisingly helpful, especially for navigating darker areas where the lighting varied. Save scumming was a lifesaver too—I’d never have finished that last level if we still relied on the save crystals. I think the game had save crystals or am I confusing it with something else?
The tank controls actually held up well and kept the platforming precise. Now looking forward to tackling TR2 next but might switch things up with the new Zelda or Prince of Persia first.

The PS1 version had the save crystals, which is how I played it back in the day. I think you unlock a harder mode, after completing the remaster, that unlocks the crystals as a save method.

Right. I REALLY need to get back into this. That you do. I should mention that if you are into Souls games for the combat system, you might not find this as good, but the exploration and discovery really kept me going all throughout. Sidequests aren't quite as obscure as in Souls, but there's still a lot of surprises to be had, especially if you follow the hints NPCs give out. And it's not like the combat is bad either. Just clunkier on the melee side. There is a bunch of spells and weapons you can use, but of course I stuck to melee, which was probably doing myself a disservice... but anyway, by the late game I had upgraded my weapon to the max level and also had equipment that increased my vampirism, so I was hacking away at bosses and recovering most of the damage at the same time. Quite exhilarating really.

DRAGON AGE: VEILGUARD
Excellent action adventure with a final act full of drama, passion, spectacular set pieces, epic boss battles and tough decisions.
It’s similar to mass effect 2 where you have to build a team whilst traveling around various hubs to save the world and along the way you build relationships with the team to strengthen your chances of success in the final act.
It doesn’t have the best set of characters but the actual quest lines each one have are very good and have many quests that play out throughout the whole campaign. How it is done really makes you care even when you do not realise it as it’s slowly done. For example with two characters I did not bother to complete their quest lines. Especially one has a terrible voice actor but come the final act when you are making choices that can mean death or failure in a certain area I found it hard to make the call and then during the cutscenes I really didn’t want anyone to die.
Relationships aren’t the best but they never are, I’d say it’s on par with their old games in this regard. Unless I’m mistaken it’s their first game where other team members also get into relationships depending on what happens which was a nice touch and lead to some more drama come those cinematic final hours.
The action is great fun through out and it helps that at any point you can refund all your skills and re spec to mix it up. I played mostly lightening mage but after certain quests in an area in a necropolis I had some great necro perks so I reset my character and turned her into a death mage.
The difficulty you can use pre sets or fine tune everything which is fantastic as I had everything on medium but my health on hard which I felt was a near perfect balance as enemy health on hard just makes it a grind. You can also change these settings at any point which again is great as I got stuck on a lightening dragon, I should have just respec my build and that would have worked but I just slapped it on easy to beat it then back to the usual settings.
It runs like a dream on pc. Everything on max with no problems, crashes or bugs the whole play through. The play through was 55hours and I didn’t do two characters quest lines and had at least a dozen side quests to do and I’m sure there were plenty more I could pick up. I imagine if you like doing looks my 55 hours is the absolute minimum time without rushing it.
Negatives I guess everyone is too nice and that’s been covered a lot in the games topic on here and all over YouTube etc. your choices really are just: nice/supportive, sarcastic/supportive and direct, blunt/supportive. Only once in the 55 hours was I allowed to just knock someone out in conversation for them being a dick. So I missed the choice. It didn’t matter too much as before I played it I’d learnt it was basically dragon age Disney so I was ready for the happy love and joy I was to spread across thedas.
Music is outstanding throughout, I might need to see if it’s on Spotify.
Finally I think before the final act I was either a 7 or 8 out of 10. But the final act is easily a 10/10 for me. Last night I had 5 hours sleep before work because I thought I was near the end and I wanted to see it through. It kept going for 4 hours. I know that sounds bad but every minute was excellent. The music, the many EPIC EPIC cut scenes, the tough decisions, the tragic deaths (depending on what you do), the drama right at the death.
So I guess a high 8 out of 10. It probably reads like a 9 but it really is that cheesy and nice and all times it’s a bit like having to eat candy floss for 55 hours.
It mostly plays it safe back to what they know after a couple of less than successful attempts at something new. A little disappointing but very understandable.
You do re visit locations a lot as well but luckily it isn’t like the other dragon age where it’s only one locations. You at least get a good variety in the hubs.
I’ll update this review probably as I’ve so much to say but I’m at work. If you like action rpg like mass effect 2&3 and you don’t mind the Disney vibes then this will be your jam (or candy floss).

Dungeons of Hinterberg - 6.5/10
Passable game pass fodder I guess. Quite enjoyable in places, but dungeons can be fairly hit and miss, and some of them really start to drag on. There's some very clunky combat that gets a bit better with upgrades, but still has frustratingly slow attack animations that never give you enough time to dodge the constant stream of off-screen projectile attacks. I'll still probably dip back in to clean up achievements, as it's quite a nice chilled experience aside from the combat.

That's a bit disappointing as it looked lovely.
Is there any way to make the combat easy enough that those frustrations aren't frustrating? Or would making the combat easy hollow out the game?
Just from the trailers I wasn't imagining it as a combat-heavy game.

You can change difficulty at any point, which I ended up doing for the last few dungeons. Some of which get very combat heavy with multiple waves of enemies to clear in encounters. But yeah, that just means it's the same frustrating combat but enemies barely tickle you, so you don't have to repeat anything at least.
I'd say it's still worth having a look if you've got it on game pass, as it's quite nice just taking it at your own pace and dipping in and doing a dungeon or two a day.

Modern warfare 3
Did give up but a friend said to give it another go as it has some good missions and there is a few good ones and glad I gave it another go. I like the raid like high rise apartments and the stadium one to name 2. Despite the numerous studios that worked on, its not enough for the rushed dev time they had. The dam water level is still badly glitched and no audio during cutscene, the main problem with the missions are just reused warzone maps and objectives. The gun combat is good but its no well written, the old MW3 did the events of Soap and Shephard's deaths better its quite poorly written here. With this MW3 and blops6 they are trying to push MP and zombies into single player, hoping you make the jump for the few people that play it for the single player
its on game pass so no money was spent and it was good gunplay but its not a good single player, one of the worst alongside vanguard (although that is better linear shooter if you don't play it on cheating veteran mode)

Pull this lever to move a boat all the way back at the beginning of the level move a couple of feet so you can cross to a platform to pull another level that destroys the obstacle originally blocking your path. You could tell they ran out of steam towards the end. But don't worry, Tomb Raider 3 has an even worse one.

Minishoot' Adventures (Steam) It's Zelda 1 but it's a twin-stick bullet-hell-ish game ( gameplay trailer here to see what I mean). There's a demo on Steam and I highly recommend giving it a try. So it's an exploratory game with neat crisp graphics and a chill soundtrack, very approachable, intuitive and pleasant to play, gives me Pixeljunk vibes which is a good thing in my book. It's definitely more aimed at casual players than shmup enthusiasts, I don't play bullet hell games but was able to finish it on the highest difficulty (the final dungeon of Zelda 1 was definitely harder). There is challenge here for non-hardcore players if you want it, but don't be afraid you can make it as easy as you want with different difficulty and assist settings down to outright invincibility. That said, after finishing the game a colosseum-style area opens where you can fight endless waves of enemies in arenas if you're into that sort of thing, I'm not so I didn't care for it. Just saying there may be a greater challenge for those who want it, I just can't say much about it. Still I don't think it's the main purpose of the game, it's mostly about the exploratory Zelda-style gameplay. There are open areas populated by varying amounts of enemies, there's a lot of challenge rooms where you're trapped and need to fight 3 waves or so, and there are boss fights. Open area enemies respawn after dying or loading the game, challenge rooms and bosses stay dead permanently. I'm normally not a fan of arena-based combat but in this type of game I guess what you gonna do? I found it perfectly reasonable and entertaining here though. The exploration part is mostly about accessing new passages or unlocking shortcuts by finding keys or switches. You'll also find new abilities that in some cases allow you to access many more places, metroidvania-style. Doing completionist main game runs (no colosseum), my first playthrough on normal took 8 hours and the second one in hard mode took 6. Overall I was having really good fun, especially in the first few hours where I was so addicted I couldn't put the controller down. During the second half the excitement went down a little bit because after the novelty wears off there isn't that much variety, the game mostly sticks to the core gameplay described above and as such it doesn't feel that different in the end than it did in the beginning. But since the core gameplay is so solid I was still having good fun. Just not sure about replay value though because it gets kinda repetitive. Still a great experience on first playthrough and for that alone absolutely worth it. 8.5/10

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5)
Finished this about a month or so ago so catch up post but where to start really? It’s a beast! 2 months of playing only this and clocked up around 90hrs…
Some of the pros - for the most part graphically great, sublime soundtrack moments, smooth gameplay - the characters you likely love, industry leading cut scenes - an epic and intricately woven story - the mini games!
Some of the cons - quest types off story tend to conform to set patterns often feeling like busy work - combat can often devolve to button mashing - at times long cut scenes and large periods of open world busy work can test patience - you’re going to need to make a serious time commitment
For the most part I really enjoyed Part 1 prior to this and for the most part Part 2 has taken it another stage further on the grandness so… 8.5/10 from me. If you love RPGs and can enjoy the more traditional quirks of JRPGs then highly recommended. I don’t think it will be my GOTY but it will probably be in the top 3…

Half life Alyx
Played it in non vr mode and still it was a brilliant experience. Beautiful to look at, incredible sound quality and music, intense atmosphere.
Felt so great being back in this world after 10+ years and in non vr it basically plays like hl2.
The game is mostly intact with only really the loot box puzzles being removed, otherwise the puzzles all still work.
Probably an 8 out of 10 so I’d imagine it is an easy 10 if played in vr.
