Ulythium Tell me something (if you want of course): do you write for a living? Because, if you don't, you probably should!

JonFE Aw, thanks Sadly, no - I'd dearly love to, but it just hasn't worked out ( yet, he added with all the optimism he could muster).

Ulythium Maybe you could try to combine these two interests, either write about games (like you do here) or write for games (scripts, dialogs, etc.)! Who knows, a long and prosperous career could be in the wings

God of War (2018)
Bit late to get on this hype train - don't own a Playstation so bought this recently on PC through a GoG sale.
Anyway, it was a really fun experience. I understand why the franchise purists were disappointed, but I have to applaud Santa Monica Studios for taking this well loved IP and modernising it for the new generation; you can clearly see they took inspiration from Dark Souls and the Witcher 3, and the game is all the better for it. I did have issues with how the difficulty scaled (i.e. you are totally useless without a high enough level) and the end game was underwhelming, but the combat, the side quests and the overall story were great.
Need to try Ragnarok and see where Kratos and Atreus go next.

You never know. Sin used to be a regular on the RPS forums, and they ended up writing for RPS.
Though being a games journalist doesn't seem like a good career choice these days. Most of them are writing *for* games these days.

Just imagine the dilemma if Uly became a game reviewer and had to redeem a code to play a review copy instead of getting a physical copy!
Agreed that you definitely have a knack for it.

AI: Somnium Files
A visual novel thing made by the people who made the Zero Escape trilogy. You play as an amnesiac detective, investigating a murder by going into people's dreams Inception-style. It becomes very complicated when you start getting into the story, but there are some interesting sci-fi twists and turns, multiple endings and all of that.
The non-VN part of it involves you trying to unlock repressed memories and other stuff in people's dreams, by interacting with things much like you would in a (Zero) Escape room.
The puzzles follow a kind of dream logic. Which is a neat idea in theory, but is actually the biggest problem I had with it. Because dream logic doesn't make sense! You've got a time limit in these things, multiple things to interact with (all of which use time), and often no idea as to what thing is going to be the key to unlocking everything. I was pretty fed up by the last couple of these sequences, so just looked up guides to finish them.
Anyway, it's still an interesting game, I'd still recommend it if you're a fan of 999 and the like. I just found the actual game part a bit obtuse at times.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars: Reforged
Great remaster. I truly enjoyed it.
Read about the changes they made compared to 1996 version. They followed concept art more than final release of the game which had to have some backgrounds simplified. Hence there are few changes in how backgrounds look.
They also changed how ending area looks like. Allowing to tie it more to the Broken Sword 3: Sleeping Dragon. Which connects to story in BS1 apparently but I so don't remember it anymore!!
I hope BS6 is successful so they can do BS2: reforged as well.

Doom 64 8/10
Just finished a playthrough of Doom 64 on the PS5 and despite the age of the game I really enjoyed it. Going back to the simplicity of the earlier titles was refreshing, no complex mechanics, just pure action. I loved being able to blitz through levels, mowing down enemies and navigating the maps. The horror aspects of the game have lost something over the years, these old Doom games used to scare the shit out of me.
The final boss gave me a bit of a scare though, I thought I'd screwed myself over by missing the keys, but after about 50 attempts, I managed to cheese it. Highly recommend if youâre looking for some classic FPS nostalgia.

Sanitarium (PC)Horror point and click adventure. Other than that, I don't quite know how to describe this. It has vibes straight out of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, but the horror is more on the grotesque side, the atmosphere isn't quite as gloomy, and the puzzles aren't nearly as hard. It could also be considered a spiritual successor to Weird Dreams, although you won't realize that until long into the story. The real focus here is the story and outlandish horror elements, which are indeed quite unique, and basically carry the whole thing. The puzzles on the other hand, seem to be mostly there to force you to explore everything before moving on. There's no inventory mixing, and the uses for all items are pretty obvious, no MI2 monkey wrench here. This doesn't quite make the game a cakewalk however, because as you'd expect from a 90's adventure, there's some pixel hunting, and no way to highlight hotspots or pickable items until you have examined them first. You also walk sloooowly, although luckily this is not such a big issue since the locations tend to be fairly small. Still, it's a pretty good adventure, with a very weird setting, and since it belongs to the Lucasarts school of gameplay, you don't have to worry about getting stuck in an unwinnable state. 8/10

Astro Bot - 9/10 Run, jump, punch and....blow? your way through a series of highly colorful, creative levels with Sony's mascot platformer. The platforming feels very tight, the levels are generally quite easy to complete, with the challenge left to additional levels that do test the reflexes somewhat. The game comes to life with the animations of the bots, enemies and the environments, it's a real joy to look at. As you progress you get to rescue bots, some of which are cameo characters from other games across the PS History. I've seen some grumpy guts complaining that this isn't a good thing, essentially parading around dead IP, weaponising it for your nostalgia with no hope of bringing it back. But it doesn't really hold weight when they're pitching it as Sonys fault even though some of the most obscure ones are third party. Much as I love Dark Chronicle and Alundra , I can concede they aren't coming back and that's ok. Some of the joy of playing the levels is rescuing the bots going "Is that...it is!" Very fun platformer, took about 15 hrs to 100% it all, definitely one of the games of the year.

Just finished Dino Crisis on PS5, via the PS Plus Classics collection, first time I've played it but felt a bit underwhelming. The gameplay was straightforward enough but with some clunky signposting and the dinosaurs lacked the scare factor of RE's zombies. Itâs easy to see why the devs haven't revived the series(yet), still worth a try for classic survival horror fans though.

BLOPS6 aka Blacks ops 6 - single player only
While since I played COD game, it was nice to play big budget single player FPS. Shooting feels good as the studios are just COD mines now and they do things to make it less than just go through this level and kill everything. One level I really hated was
some COD zombies crap but it could of been good as creepy horror mission, the manicure section was quite good but that turns into another bullet sponge boss fight and you fight these bosses again and again as zombie hordes rush you. fuck the one in the small area with that boss
Treyarch are not as good as they think with the same weird stuff they like to do, not awful but not amazing like the fanboys gush over
They still have not improved the AI, it feels as dumb as older games. Your fellow AI will just stand there not doing much and the enemy AI will ignore them and focus on you. Also had a great glitch where I have minus $4million in cash, so can't do any upgrades (which you need)
7/10 - Its good gamepass game to play then move onto another game

Shadow of Mordor
Abandoned this fairly on when I got it a year or so ago but Rings of Power got me wanting some more Middle Earth action so decided to give it another go.
Whilst there's a lot of room for improvement it's quite fun running around killing orcs, though most of the first half is spent running away as it's very easy to get overwhelmed. It can also get ridiculous when a fight is interrupted every 30 seconds as a new captain arrives and introduces themselves.
It gets much better in the second half of the game when you start to unlock the better skills which make the combat much more fun and enable you to actually fight the hordes.
Story was fun and generally fits within Tolkien's world even if some of the script would cause him to raise an eyebrow. The appendices also feel like they were written by people who actually read and liked Tolkien's work. Rings of Power take note.

Ace Combat 7 - 8/10
Kept hearing about this game over the years and felt in the mood to take on my pilot skills to the test. I've never played any game in the series at this point but the game did a decent job at getting me into it and finding myself G-turning dodging missile lock ons and retaliating with a few of my own. All in all it's a very fun, varied campaign of 20 missions that asks you to do a number of objectives to keep things interesting. One of the most fun being a Death Star esque trench run through mountain valleys to avoid a radar. Died a few times on the run so repeat attempts made me tackle it as fast as I can, it's exhilarating and the reward is being able to unleash destruction on an unsuspecting base. As you progress you can buy better jets, special weapons and customisable parts. It absolutely builds up the power fantasy of being an ace pilot, your reputation grows over the campaign to the degree that enemies fear seeing your insignia. And it is still a pretty visual tour de force for a PS4 game, descending on a battleship and causing it to explode will kick up water and dirt to muddy your cockpit view in an instant, it really sells that sense of speed.
There are aspects to the game like multiplayer and VR I wasn't able to try, but I understand those are good. One aspect I think didn't live up to expectations was the soundtrack, it's generally very good but I had heard from sources that it uses the soundtrack in the same way as something like FFXVI, Nier Automata, MGR Revengeance, where it adds to the hype as the story shifts and turns. That is something I love to experience in games and felt this game would be prime for it. And I didn't quite get that experience. Still, an easy recommend to anyone wanting to try it

Shotgun King
A strange roguelike... deck builder... thing? In very short words: it's a chess board, you are the black king against a bunch of white piaces, and you have a shotgun. Sounds simple, but it's not quite so. With each new level (it ends at 12), you get the choice of a black card with favorable upgrades coupled with an unfavorable white card. Movement rules are taken out of chess, but turns are not. You win by defeating (aka shooting to death) the white king, but it doesn't necessarily have to be like that. Checkmates are signaled but not enforced. In short, knowing how chess works is helpful, but as in most roguelikes, victory also depends on luck and knowing how to press your advantages. It's a novel idea and one that is fun, but quite unforgiving. Getting the right cards and avoiding the worst ones is almost mandatory if you want to actually win. It's also a roguelike instead of a roguelite, so there's no making the game easier with repeated runs.
It's never easy to tell when a roguelike is completed. Is it when you reach the end for the first time? But what if it was just a lucky run, wouldn't it be fairer to say that it's completed when you are able to reliably finish it whenever you start a run? Or maybe, for a completely different approach, it's done when you are bored with it? Given how hard Shotgun King can be, I'm happy enough with the first one. I reached the end, and that's the game done for me. I've been attempting it on and off for months, pretty sure I got lucky this one time, but I'll take it.
7/10

Whoever recently mentioned Jusant in this or the 'currently playing' thread, thank you. A lovely little game it is. Reminded me of Ico and Zelda with an overall length that is much closer to the former than the latter.

Citizen Sleeper - 5/5
After cycling through a few games recently I eventually found one that clicked, so much so that I completed in 2 sessions (6hrs total). Even for a such a short game this is rare for me.
A thing of pure beauty. My description won't do justice to how precisely and perfectly the systems combine to create such a strong connection to the material. It's Disco Elysium X Papers Please X Neuromancer. You start each day with up to 5 dice, and you use those dice to attempt tasks. Once your dice are gone you end the day. Each day drains your energy and your condition, which you must replenish with drugs and food, or by completing tasks. If you let these meters deplete too far you start losing dice, which limits the tasks you can attempt. Each day presents you with harsh, life or death choices. You must choose whether to earn money to support yourself, or attempt to help others, all the while being pursued by human and AI hunters. It's so tense! The stories are heart-breaking. A clear indictment of the gig-economy, but never one that feels preachy.
It's the core dice mechanic that is so simple but perfectly formed that brings everything together. I can't remember a recent game that succeeds so brilliantly.
It is short but there are multiple endings - I think I got the best one. Might not be for everyone but it really hit me emotionally.

Doki Doki Literature Club (PS5)Visual novel with a cutesy Japanese anime style that goes to some disturbing places and has a bit of fourth wall breaking. I went in knowing that it would eventually get more interesting but the first couple of hours were a bit of a slog nonetheless. It is worth sticking with, though, as it does do some clever things and has some scary/shocking moments. In retrospect, those first few hours are needed to get you familiar with the characters. I've rolled credits on it but have a feeling there are a few more secrets I've missed, so I might dip back in a bit. Probably not a game I'd buy, but as a PS Plus freebie it was enjoyable and something a bit different. Mrs Nano watched me play it and enjoyed it too. I recently finished this off too. I went as far as pursuing the Platinum trophy which basically just requires a âcompletionistâ approach to getting all the variables for favouring different characters. While thatâs not difficult(*), it was time consuming, and the pay off in terms of the deeper meta context for the game (I wonât spoil - if you know, you know) was only just barely worth it. I liked it for the subversion of expectations, but Iâd say if you rolled the credits, youâve seen the best it has to offer. Worth playing, but if youâre new to the genre, play something like Virtueâs Last Reward instead. * Side stories were pretty dull really⊠and there is one collectible you need for a certain trophy thatâs based entirely on the random 1/50 chance of getting a different title screen to appear when quitting to the game during Act 2⊠ugh.

Read Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
I canât really put this in the 52 Game thread, as itâs DLC, but I spent 14 hours and 55 minutes completing this game, 100%, for Halloween this year. Itâs a great little package that doesnât forget that itâs a game at heart, rather than a cinematic experience.
It feels even more like a sandbox game, given there really isnât a strong narrative pulling you towards your conclusion. Main missions are delivered like Stranger missions and are broken up into small chunks. You can save at any time and youâre not ever funnelled into a linear narrative-focused mission that takes you away from whatever else you might have wanted to do. Itâs very refreshing for the genre and it suits the portability of the Switch/Steam Deck beautifully.
There are a few more bugs in this game, compared to the main game. Iâve fallen through the environment once. Iâve had a horse randomly die whilst galloping down an empty road. Iâve had a blue âfriendâ dot stuck in my map for nearly 3 hours (a random encounter that seemingly failed to resolve itself).
But itâs been great fun for the most part. Itâs nice to see the map put to better use in this game. Although you spend more time fast travelling, youâre constantly referring to the names of the locations, which helps you better acknowledge them. You revisit them a lot too, so the DLC actually makes better use of these areas than the main game does! They even highlight other areas of interest that the main game seemingly ignored. It kinda shows how much a world map can be wasted, or just how much of it can go under utilised.
Anyways, I ramble on. This DLC was excellent. The end.

Metaphor Re:Fantazio (SX) - 8/10
I probably would've ranked it higher if I hadn't already played P3R and SMTVV earlier in the year, so it really felt like I'd had my fill of turn based combat. Loved the setting, the cast and the general feeling of adventuring around a fantasy land, even if it's really just a few dungeons and town hubs with static art acting as any other locations in between them. It looks fairly acceptable (very much a PS4 game), and downright lovely in the FMV scenes. The soundtrack is great, although feels a little lacking in vocal bangers like 'rivers in the desert' etc. Throat singing monks don't quite have the same impact... The archetype system is excellent, especially that it doesn't punish you for just sticking to one that you love (you still get A-EXP items for an equivalent amount that you can use to upgrade any other archetype). Although the encounters are varied enough that you do need to keep mixing things up.
10/10 for the menus

Return to Monkey Island
Having never played any other entries in the series, I missed some of the jokes and nostalgia, but was still really good fun to play.
The ending though⊠I see what they were trying to do but I think there were better ways of executing it. So left me slightly disappointed at the end.
Overall it was excellent though.

RE4 Remake.
All the great things about this have already been said so ill just sum it up by saying ive started and abandoned so many games this year, almost feeling a bit disillusioned with gaming itself.
To compete a game is an accolade in itself for me right now.
This had me hooked from the start and I felt compelled to see it through to the finish. Not too long and had a blast despite it being a 'horror', which i usually avoid!

Space Marine 1I didn't think I was gonna finish this one, but final boss is now in the bin. This game does so many things right with the way it captures the fantasy of being a space marine. The big clompy movement, the meaty bolters and chainswords, the huge gothic environments, the tiny little imperial guardsmen. But it's also much more of a slog that it should be. First 3rd is great - melee combat against orks. Middle 3rd really drags. Final 3rd picks up again, though it's much more about ranged combat and the imprecise aiming and lack of explicit cover mechanics isn't always up to the task. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I kept finding myself playing the game wrong. I'd have the wrong weapons. Or I'd not be using the Fury/Heal mechanic. Or I'd still be playing a melee game when the game had apparently switched to a ranged one. Each time I finally worked out what I was supposed to be doing I had a lot more fun. For such a simple game it sure confused me a lot.
Always felt great when it was going well, and then wanted to turn it off as soon as I died. So I ended up playing it in small doses.
There is a sequence near the end where you're fighting your way across the Brooklyn Bridge as part of a force of marines that feels really badass.
