Judgement (PS+) Hours: 30
Decent. I’m still unsure whether I actually like Yakuza games. At times they are dull as ditchwater, but amongst all its idiosyncrasies and peculiarities it’s a series I get a craving to play. I think that is down to the storytelling and characters which are rich and well drawn. I don’t think it quite hits the heights of Zero which for me had more control over its overall tone, but I enjoyed being around Yagami and Kaito a lot.
The detective approach is interesting, but it mostly feels superficial. I never really dived into my case files after the first few chapters and questioning and scene searching is nothing more than part of a process you have to go through but overall it freshens the core gameplay up and it’s something different.
But yeah it’s a weird game and series. It’s peaks and troughs the video game. Like some days you can only stomach 20 minutes of it, but end up playing 2 hours straight on others. It just about a decent length, with the narrative and characters doing the heavy lifting.

The Messenger (PS4)Absolute steal at £3 and got my moneys worth at around 40hrs! (which can't be right, maybe pause menu counts?) Though I did collect all the seals and the last one was an absolute fuck. Thoroughly enjoyable 2D metroidvania ninja romp! Great chiptunes, 8bit/16bit mode, funny writing, skill tree, maps, collectibles etc.. Free DLC awaits! 9/10 I absolutely love it up until you unlock the portal room to go and jump back and forth around the world then I drop it hard. Its basically perfect up until then though.

Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars: Reforged
I absolutely loved what they did with the remaster of this classic. Even having played this probably about 3 times over the years.. I still couldn't remember some of the Syria puzzles. That god damn toilet brush.
Also attempted to go for the platinum, where you have to use the buzzer on every person.. bloody missed one somewhere.

One of my favourite games of all time! I've played it semi regularly since the 90's. I'm still waiting on the switch version!

Dead Island 2
Ends rather abpruptly but I actually like the way it ended. Still got loads of sides to do etc and it gives your character a compelling reason to stay around in the end game, so I think it works well. Still got the SoLA DLC to do as well (I did Haus midway through).
Really dug this game in the end. Can't believe after being in the works for so long, and going through as many devs as it did, that the end result was such a solid and enjoyable experience. I loved the different maps and preferred them over a huge sprawling open world. Every area had it's own distinct personality. The combat was solid (and brutal - there's no end to the way in which you can smash and cut those poor dead bastards up), the weapon crafting fun and varied, and the card system kept things fresh. The fact it came along and absolutey shits all over Dying Light 2 is genuinely something I didn't expect.

I started the PS+ trial yesterday and before I knew it the two hours was up and I still had a big grin on my face. I very nearly upgraded to full version immediately but have a feeling it'll get put on sale before Halloween, right? I know I can get a cheap physical copy but that won't be compatible with the two hours I've just played and I'd rather just crack on than start the game over again.

Little Nightmares 2 - 8/10
Just finished the game and enjoyed it. Loved the creepy antmosphere and whilst the trial and error gameplay can frustrate, the frequent autosaves make it manageable. Excited to see what the studio does next!

Lost in Random (Series S)
Zoink's first real big game, and probably the most Burton game you'll ever play. Unlike their previous games, this is an action adventure. And it delivers mostly on the adventure part, with an amazing cast of characters, all of them quite memorable, a great story that is both funny and dark at the same time, and some really clever dialogue and plot twists. Sidequests aren't great (they are pretty much just go here, or talk to this character, or bring them an item) but the dialogue is usually worth it. It's also fairly long at 17 hours, according to my data file. After an admittedly slow start, I can't say I was ever bored.
The action part, on the other hand, could be better. Battles ihe first half of the game are generally a chore, because your combat abilities depend on two things: a dice roll, and your equipped cards. The dice roll decided how many tokens you get, and cards cost a certain number of tokens to play. Thing is, your dice can only roll higher numbers depending on story progression, so in the first half of the game your throws will only get up to 3 at most, and that means you'll often have far fewer action points to use, making battles longer than they need to be. As for your deck, in the early game you won't get many cards to play with. Frankly, combat in the early game is a slog. And even later on, when you will get higher rolls and better cards, combat is still repetitive simply because certain cards (usually basic attack ones and cheat cards) are much more useful than others, so you'll build your deck around them for sure. There are also some bosses, but they aren't troubling enough to be climactic.
Now that previous paragraph doesn't sound very positive, but I cannot stress enough how good the story and dialogue is, and how well the game is presented overall. Honestly, it's worth playing just for that, even if the combat system isn't much to write home about and you'll need to get past the relatively slow initial few hours.

I had it mixed up with some other game, Figment I think, so I looked it up last time you mentioned how good it was. From the screenshots it looks visually a lot like Alice: Madness Returns, though it sounds like the combat is totally different, and the story more complex.
Sounds interesting. Sounds like it could have done with 5 hours chopped out just like Alice though.

That's close to my thoughts on Lost in Random too, I loved it. The gameplay isn't the strongest, not that it's bad, but the world and characters did pull me in and I was left wanting more of it.
They've announced a spin off but it's a roguelite which I'm not too keen on, but I don't think a full sequel was on the cards so eh

I couldn't get on with Lost in Random. Took bloody ages to get to any combat, then when I did it felt like enemies were chipping away at my health despite me dodging any attacks.
I'm fairness I was in one of my play 10 games and see which one clicks phases, so probably didn't give it a proper chance.

Assassin creed Mirage
Its a nice change for them to go back to the roots of the AC games but they didn't improve on the missions/game design apart from it gives you hints on things you can do to get to the target or a mission. close to what Hitman games have been doing since IO rebooted the hitman games but not quite as good. ubisoft could of done something different to AC as it was smaller game compared to the mega bloat they do, the game was going to be DLC/expansion to AC: Valhalla maybe the budget was limited.
Some whinged "oh they did what you wanted and made less RPG and you still moaned" No, gamers want more stealth (and less bloat RPG) but with something new in game design, improve on what you did and not just a plain remake. Skillup made the same comment in his review.
Actually agree with IGN about Basim, he is a bit dull and the story was ok I guess. I would like to have seen sands of time, magical, arabian nights with magical creatures. Would of nice to have sands of time cross over (I see ubisoft is selling the prince of persia outfit)
It gives some nostalgia of playing the early AC games but they could do more
6 or 6.5 out of 10

Space Marine 2
So damn refreshing to play such a focused game that knows what it is. Reading an interview with the devs recently their view was AAA games often fail these days because they want to be everything to everyone while not nailing one specific element.
They looked at what made the original great, respected the lore and detail of the world and nailed the feel of the combat. The 40k license does alot of heavy lifting, but the core game is so fun to play, it was hard to stop playing.
Wished the counter/pary mechanic was a little more consistent and Chaos definitely wasn't as fun to fight, but other than that I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

Trials of Mana
Posted some half way through the game thoughts in the other thread. Glad its not 60+ hour game although its a bit padded as they make you kill 8 monsters and then some more fights just to get that hour completion up. One nice thing is you can start new game plus and choose another character as the main player (each one gets their own starting mission and certain characters have their own end boss fight which changes the story up)
the game is a little unbalanced and need to know who to pick as your 3 characters but its fun action rpg. Its not a high budget game but thats fine as Mana games have smaller gamer base compared to other RPG
