Ever buy/get given a Transformer as a kid and be so disappointed in it you'd rather play with a Go-Bot? Mine is this, which I foolishly spent pocket money on .

Probably the one for the Odyssey I had as a kid which replaced the one which broke. It lasted maybe two days before also blowing

G1 Topspin was pretty bad, and we had him. I dunno if he was the worst one we had, but he was certainly up there, because he barely transformed and was a sort of weird object when transformed, and also was kind of a gross colour. Definitely Gobots better than that.

Powerglide. So lame. Not quite Bumblebee level lame, but close.

Optimus Prime.
So disappointing to actually play with.
Soundwave was by far the best.

Any that didn't transform properly - I remember being really excited to get Starscream as a kid to find that you had to push the hands on (they didn't fold or pull out from somewhere in the toy itself) and that the back of his head was a massive nose cone of the plane. Seemed lazy design, even back then.
To be fair, most of them were better vehicles/objects than bots anyway.

There was a toy series called "Action Masters" that I had a few of.
The Gimmick was they didn't transform. Transformers that don't transform.
Utterly pointless.

The Vamp Gobot Was fairly cool as a kid...
Sadly as a kid I could only afford mini Autobots. My younger brother was luckier and got things like Jetfire and Scorponok for a few quid at car boot sales.
Brawn was disappointing as I thought he should have been in a bigger range.

Let's be honest, they all fell into one of two categories:
1. Cool looking objects that transform into shit robots.
2. Cool looking robots that transform into shit objects.

I had one of these ones as well but it at least pretended to transform into a crab (or scorpion possibly). I loved it but it was terrible.

A lot of the original G1 toys looked crap when they turned into robots. The worst offenders were the ambulance and camper van (Ratchet and Ironside?) which just had windscreens for heads, and the jeep one, which looked cool as fuck as a jeep and then just a shit square thing with big tits as a robot.

For me it was Hot Rod. It was one of two Transformers that I owned. There was nothing particularly wrong with it (although the car mode wasn’t really like any car I had seen) but my other Transformer was Jetfire (the Macross Valkyrie rebadge) which was a much cooler toy.

Looking up some of these to fuel nostalgia, and I'd forgotten how wonderfully irreverent and snarky the image captions on the Transformers wiki could be - tfwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page

Not a transformer but if you had a relative that decided you weren't worth Transformer money at Christmas you might have ended up with a Rock Lord. Yes toys that became that incredibly exciting inanimate object... a rock. I had this green fellah, here he is transformed and as a rock.

Had a Rock Lord that turned into a pterodactyl, which I still think was pretty cool. At least in pterodactyl form. Also vaguely recall a Rock Lords / Gobot crossover.

Metroplex turned out to be a bit shit. I had Metroplex as a Christmas present. I really did appreciate it at the time, as a kid, but looking back it really was a crap toy. A so called "city" that wasn't much bigger than the other Transformer toys. Scorponok did the same thing but much better.

Rocklords were awesome, and yeah there was a Go-Bots and Rocklords movie team up. Hard to say which franchise there was doing the real heavy lifting. Wasn't a bad film though.
Bad transformers though? I too wasn't sure what the pull of the Action Masters were, or the Pretenders (the ones with a humanoid shell and a crappy transforming little robot inside, a bit like if Kinder Eggs had been invented in the Matrix. A lot of the microbots ones were also pretty simplistic, basically your 'push the arms and legs in' jobby. I definitely had a few of those.
I liked most of the regular G1 guys, though they pale into nothing compared to the insane detail and complexity of the 500 quid Masterpiece toys for land-barons and lottery winners. Those are insane. I heard Motor Master takes a full 3-months to transform.

Powerglide. So lame. Not quite Bumblebee level lame, but close. I cannot for one second deny he was lame but I loved Powerglide a huge fucking amount as a kid. I still remember being in the playground with him and other kids (amazingly) being impressed with him. Jetfire was the final word in Transformers though for my money (even if decades later I learned he was some kind of rip-off).

Megatron because he transformed into a toy gun that was too big to play with the rest of then.

The Megatron robot was a bit budget too. He had rickets and a massive codpiece.

The only Transformer I ever had was Optimus Primal from Beast Wars, and he was really cool, so I have no answer for this thread.

This was the Rocklord I had. Granny got me it from a church jumble sale so I don’t think I ever realised they were a proper thing until this thread.

My most disappointing Transformer was this one. Mainly because I took it into primary school one day and a little radgie kid stole the transformer figure that fit inside when it was in the classroom cupboard and the teacher didn’t believe me that both figures were mine.
