Probably Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. It gets the Baldur's Gate feeling better than any other game I've played.

Do nominations have to be released some time within 2021? Or is this at the nominator's discretion, being the game they enjoyed playing this year?

What kind of thread is this with no poll attached to it? This is an outrage. This is a textbook poll candidate thread. TEXTBOOK.

Probably not played enough to really have a good opinion on this (I have Returnal sitting on my shelf and the nods to it here are making me keen to quickly finish Deathloop and get on to it).
Of what I have played, I probably have 3 candidates - Hitman 3, Psychonauts 2 and Inscryption. I think Hitman 3 was the best single package, if you include the previous 2 games. By itself it features some very good levels, but a couple of okay ones or duds.
Psychonauts 2 was probably the best overall, but I'll nominate Inscryption, as I expect it is the least likely to get picked by other people and I think it deserves some recognition.

For me Hades and Diablo 2 have reinvigorated my gaming this year.

I can't even remember what I've played thsi year, but I'm fairly sure none of it was released this year.

Echoes of the Eye. Yes, I'm counting it as its own game. Fight me.
Otherwise, well, it's a bit early. I want to see where FH5 and Halo Infinite land.

Hades is my GOTY, which I'm including in this year because that's when it came to Game Pass

Otherwise, well, it's a bit early. I want to see where FH5 and Halo Infinite land. Feeling the same way - FH4 was my GOTY in 2018 so I have high hopes for 5. Otherwise, this year's GOTY is a close call - There have been several indies that I've really liked a lot, but there hasn't been a clear outright leader so far. I'd probably go with either Sable or Chicory up to this point. With Wildermyth close behind...

I know it's not out until next week but I'm gonna nominate Shin Megami Tensei V. I have faith in Atlus to deliver an absolute belter.

Unless something happens I think it'll be Lost Judgment for me. Once it got going that game grabbed me and didn't let me go. Psychonauts 2 will be my surprise of the year, I didn't expect to like that game half as much as I did but it hit me just right.

MLB The Show 21, or possibly NBA 2K22 for letting me live out the dream of giving a high five to Mark Cuban.

Slim pickings for me as regards actual 2021 games played, but I'd have to nominate Solasta: Crown of the Magister.
A breezy, noob-friendly D&D romp.

Ha, first time I skipped it in many years, but a perennial All-Star for sure.

This year won because I pulled Mike Trout in a free pack.

Returnal for me. Took a genre I really didn't like, was ridiculously hard at times but I always kept coming back for the perfect controls. I don't think I've ever played such a responsive game.

Yeah it's Returnal for me quite easily. Wish they would do some DLC already.

Judging by the lack of interest in its own thread, it seems like people have gone off it as fast as they were on it, but I'd give Hot Wheels Unleashed an honorable mention at least...
