As usual I'm behind so don't think I have played anything from this year No reason we can't have a 'Best game you played in 2021' thread. Us PC gamers and our enormous backlogs like that sort of thing. My gaming time is fairly redundant, mostly because of the PIGWHIP Challenge. I think the only game released this year that I have played is Bowser’s Fury, which was excellent. If they had released more as DLC, I would have certainly picked it up.

Returnal, sublime and infuriating in equal measure.

Oh, I forgot Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury came out this year. They'd make my shortlist too.

Top 3 in reverse order
3 Metroid Dread - you know it's a good game when your compulsion to play it isn't driven by the PIGWHIP Challenge
2 Mass Effect Trilogy LE - amazing experience playing them back to back for the first time
1 Tales of Iron - I could make my own argument that either of my other suggestions were better than Tales of Iron but it was one of those hidden gems that really surprised me. A 2d Souls like with rats frogs and bugs. The Production values are amazing including a stellar narration from the Witcher fella. The Dark Souls like combat was seriously meaty and bastard hard, yet accessible in its execution. (It must have been I'm shit at DS) Watching your ruined rat civilisation slowly rebuild as you complete quests and slowly take down each excellent boss encounter gave your actions meaning which really paid off. If you like games like Hollow knight but wish the combat was a bit more sophisticated and weighty you will love Tales of Iron.

Of all the stuff I've played this year I think only D2R officially counts as a 2021 game and it doesn't feel right putting that because its a stupidly old game that's been rolled in glitter and it didn't really set my world alight.
I'll say Dyson Sphere Project as I'm sure it 'early accessed' at the very arse end of 2020 and I dumped 250 hours into it at the beginning of this year. Technically it's not even released yet? ☹️

I don't think I've actually played anything new this year.
Games I played for the first time this year would be:
Cyberpunk 2077 (released 2020) Control (2019) XCOM 2:War of the Chosen (2016... Okay I played this a bit when it was first released, but the expansion changes it substantially) Quantum Break (2016)

If we’re talking games from previous years then its Spider-man no contest

"more sophisticated and weighty" combat than HK sounds like a bold claim. Keen to check it out though. Glad someone likes it a lot though.

No reason we can't have a 'Best game you played in 2021' thread. Us PC gamers and our enormous backlogs like that sort of thing. Yeah, as was traditional in the RPS version of this thread, I don't think I've played anything actually released this year. Unless you count playing a few rounds of Fortnite, which seems to be an eternal game. The only other thing I played this year that was 'technically' released this year was Tie Fighter - the total conversion mod for the X-Wing Alliance engine. I guess it can claim to have been released in 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2021. So, win!

But I do love the X-Wing Series.

My top 3 so far would be:
1)Returnal 2)Subnautica BZ 3)Deathloop
Deathloop just beats R&C to 3rd spot.

Probably Returnal, and the first 2/3rds of Skyward Sword.
Both really caught my attention and I couldn't put them down. But its mostly been a restless year gaming wise. Bounced off a shit load of games, backlog as increased dramatically. I'm always searching for something new to buy rather than just enjoying games. And then I end up searching through the PSstpre and e-shop for ages and nothing grabs my attention.
Returnal was great though. Just one of those reminders why I enjoy gaming in the first place! Really imrpessed how they Housemarque transferred their 2-D arcade brilliantness to a 3d space. They kept the core of what makes their games so great whilst also surpassing my expectations of what they could do too. It looks (And plays) like no other game. Its stunning. The first 2/3rds of Skyward sword I was engrossed by too. It is a reminder that the series needed a big shake- up, but going back to the old design, you can't help but be enamoured how flawless the design is. Just a shame it goes on for too long.

The Outer Worlds (Switch Edition)
Loved the Firefly vibe and quite enjoyed the plot and the worlds. I loved sniping things and exploring. Played 115 hours apparently.
Then probably Agent A, a puzzle in disguise, which was a real hidden gem.
Honourable mention to Civ 6, which took me 65 hours to play the first (and so far only) game of.

I think the only 2021 games I've played are Lake and PGA 2K21. Both great, but I'll nominate Lake as being the more interesting game.
Neither compare to the hours that I've dropped on Elite : Dangerous and State Of Decay 2 though...

Every crunch and clash has weight and much like DS it's about carefully executing a plan. Hollow knight is more comparable in feel to a Metroid game combat wise. It's faster and lighter.

But I do love the X-Wing Series. A video is worth a thousand words:
Basically it needs x-wing alliance (often cheap on steam) and then the x-wing alliance upgrade and then the tie-fighter TC mod. (and maybe a patch for that)
It's not perfect, a few things had to be changed to get tie fighter to fit into xw-alliance, but it's still pretty awesome. Some of the voice acting is a bit 'young', but other than that it's pretty good.
PS/ The issue you're most likely to have is simply that of controllers. I no longer have a proper joystick like I had when I originally played tie-fighter. It works ok on a pad, but it's not half as good a feel, and I had to spend quite a while messing with mapping controls to get something that worked to my satisfaction.
But if you have a joystick you're good to go.

As usual I'm behind so don't think I have played anything from this year I'll use this thread to decide what to play in 2023. Actually I have been quite productive in lockdown at getting through my backlog. To the extent I might even replay RDR2 I enjoyed it so much.

By the way, what the heck is Returnal? It seems very popular here and I've never heard of it before. from the weird name, I assume it's a Japanese thing?

Pretty amazed you can be into games and not even heard of Returnal. It's PlayStation exclusive and not a massive ongoing franchise so it's not that amazing really. I hadn't heard of it until people started mentioning it in this thread.
