Also has to google Returnal, was bummed it was PS5 exclusive. I've only played New World and Valhalla that were released this year, I think, so I guess New World would be GOTY so far and I lost interest in that fairly quickly. Hoping Forza or (doubtful based on the feedback so far) Battlefield 2042 will top them.

Returnal for me. Still not beaten it but I still keep playing it.
Also, Hades. Again it's a lot of fun to play and I've nearly rinsed it. But not as fun as the game mentioned prior.
Resi 8 has kinda redeemed itself despite me disliking the first person view.

Probably the Quake EDIT: and Shadowman remasters (assuming that sort of thing is allowed)
I really gotta pull finger and play some new stuff.

Nominating Psychonauts 2 in the hope that the more it's memtioned the more others will play it.

Never heard of Returnal and as I've not got a PS5 or any enthusiasm, I'm not going to Google it.... as it might be really good and make me wish I had a PS5... which is never going to happen sadly.

Returnal showing up in so many GOTY lists (even before this one) played a big part in my decision to grab a PS5. I can definitely see what the hype is about. Hopefully, they do a PC port so more people can play it.

This thread has made me release how far behind I am with games as I don't think I've played anything released this year.
I see Hades mentioned a few times which is definitely one of my favorites this year, but a quick google shows it was released in December 2018 so I'm not sure if that counts.

Yeah, Hades only came to PlayStation and Xbox this past August, so I think that's fair enough. It'd be my second-place pick after Returnal.

I think Subnautica Below Zero is the only game released this year that I've finished. So that one then.
It's not been a great year, I've mostly been catching up on PC games I missed in the past decade whilst my PS5 has gathered dust.

I don't think there's anything else new coming out this year that I'll be buying, not that I'm sure it would matter anyway as without a doubt, Returnal gets my vote. Wonderful game, bravo Housemarque 👏.

Yeah, I just jumped back into it this weekend after the patch and its still light years ahead of anything ive played in terms of just connecting to the character. Its so fluid and responsive its actually a bit of a shock when you start playing.

Kind of wish I hadn't sold Returnal on now. I'm getting itchy to give it another run through. A bit of DLC would of course put me right into rebuy territory. Come on HM you know you want to.

Still waiting for a console release for Shadowman. Nightdive taking their sweet time. Is there a release date announced yet? No word, sadly. It'll run on the most potato of PCs though. I'd add Prodeus to the list but it's still in early access, gaahhh.

Returnal has been head and shoulders above anything else I have played this year.
For me, went from zero hype to top 10 of all time in a couple of weeks. Best sound design I have heard for a long time and I can't think of a game with better, more responsive controls.
Hopefully it picks up some awards and prompts more people to try it

Ok, I broke my cardinal rule and googled it. It looks kinda cool. Reviews seem good but not mind-blowing, so it's interesting it's obviously so well regarded here.
It's on PS5 though, so it's out of my reach.

I’ll admit to being slightly surprised to see everyone being so big into Returnal. I don’t remember it having such a warm response at launch.

Think it did actually, that's why I ended up getting it as the love in the thread was so persuading.

The impression I got from talk around Returnal after launch was that many were wanting to love it more but were struggling with the difficulty? Which has put me off trying it tbh, I can appreciate the satisfaction of gradually learning and succeeding with a tough game over time but I find I don't have the patience for rock-hard difficulty the older I get.

It's not that hard, once you get to grips with general gist of things. There's no insane difficulty spikes which is great too, and it absolutely smashes improving you skill naturally as your progress.

Am I allowed to vote for Witcher 3 since that is always GOTY?
Otherwise, possibly Hades or perhaps Mass Effect Trilogy.

I've got to admit, I found the third biome to be a major difficulty spike - between those bastard drones and the sheer number of obstacles between you and the boss, once you finally make it inside the Broadcast Tower , I was stuck there for quite a while. Still an astoundingly good game, though.

I’m starting to wish I’d taken the plunge on Returnal now… it was the lack of a save that put me off but I don’t even have that excuse now.
From what I have played, Metroid Dread is excellent so definitely deserves a nomination.
I confess I need to get back to Hades… played once, did about 4 runs and beat the first boss once. Never been back to it, mainly because I can’t be arsed repeating the same stuff over and over again, no matter how much dialogue there is. Hmmm…
And anyway, if Hades counts for 2021 then so does Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PS5 and that’s miles better.
(For the record, my favourite games I’ve actually played in 2021 besides Metroid and Ghost, have been Immortals Fenyx Rising and Subnautica.)

Reading this thread (including my own nominations) has confirmed my suspicions that it's been a relatively average year for games. Certainly big budget ones
