Mine is on Royal Mail special and it’s in Manchester so probably expect it today, however I won’t be doing anything with it this weekend anyway beyond having a Quick Look. I don’t know why my phone is capitalising that. Need to get some painting done today. I’ve fully done the tactical rocks and boots of four Aquilons but have stalled a bit. Am trying to get to the end of the Church of the Lightning Stone as well but keep coming to bed too late and only being able to manage ten minutes at a time 😂. I also know how it ends thanks to Luetin. I forgot to mention I finished ‘Mechanicum’ the other week, which took me three or four restarts to get going with. Not a comment on its quality - I seem to have this thing with reading these days where I need to be in the zone for it, and was an absolute bookworm in younger days. I blame phones. Anyway I thought Mechanicum was bloody excellent, albeit potentially one of those books where you think ‘does this really affect the overall story that much?’ Once I finish Tales of Heresy, only 44 more books to go in the saga! Glad you enjoyed Mechanicum. I recall having a great time reading it. Really enjoyed the in-depth description of the world. Agree though it doesn’t hugely affect things but then very few of the books really do. I’m on Shattered Legions at the minute but finding time difficult so have stalled. I usually manage a book and a half every 4 weeks but this has been drawn out. It’s good though. I see a new anthology of stories has been leaked that are after The End And The Death!

So I've finished up a few more diddy Romans, including a stone thrower that will probably not get used but looked cool so I had to have it.
Here's the Carthaginians and their allies, plus the town scenery - I have got some Sacred Band and Levy Infantry 3D prints which I'll be doing next before doing some allies for the Romans, then I may just get a game in!

Every time I fear needing an intervention for plastic addiction, Fork comes along 😂
The problem is everytime I feel I’ve been productive painting, Fork comes along 😂
Great work.

Starter set has arrived.
Rule book is nice quality but really is just that, there’s no nice fluff section or anything really. Minis look great, kinda wish they had been grey plastic as I’ll be at least priming the Death Guard in a very similar green, although I know why this isn’t the case.
The board is exactly the same quality as the Hivestorm one and has a red sand side - I presume this might be a reprint of the last box set one with the Orks?
You get a packet of dice and all the Hivestorm tokens again.
Packaging is very flimsy card like your average box of minis - dislike that. I want the quality thicc stuff like I got in Leviathan!
For somebody that didn’t need the rule book, to get two full teams, a quality game board, dice and tokens for the price feels like a decent enough deal, within the context of the hobby.
Got the little piece of rock from Element as well - bonus - it’s been placed on the other half’s pillow as the usual distraction from difficult conversations 😂
I will get the Ork and Ratling set, and could really do with that being a post Xmas release, but I’m embargoing myself from buying models for a good while now. I’ve currently got 5 Killteams, about 2000 points of marines and about 1200 points of Sisters to paint up now. Need to dent it.
Have asked for Element vouchers for Xmas off my sis, so hopefully that will fund rattlecans for the Blood Angels and Death Guard Teams plus a couple of new pots I’ll need.
Oh - also ordered the Kasrkin leader as the freebie for Warhammer Plus, so I’ll be getting that at some point I suppose.
The Xmas box sets are rumoured to be announced for preorder either next Saturday or the Saturday afterwards. The Knight and Dark Angels ones look brilliant, the Necron one OK, I don’t know enough about Tau to comment, and the Sisters one is shite. Reckon the AoS ones look decent enough.

Well if it helps at all, each base is only the equivalent of 1 or 2 28mm figures and I've been knocking this stuff out since July... Also, I paint to the 3 feet rule, you guys all seem to be much more adept at making your toys look amazing from 3 inches (and 3 feet)!

Hope everyone else thinks the sisters box is shite it’s the one I’m going for (along with dark angels). Pretty much rounds out my forces for them as I have none of that side of things other than the ETB ones. Which I do have spares if so can mix and match for some unique units. Think the two rhinos have bits to stick if a second Immolator/exorcist as well.

The original Combat Patrol is what sold me on the faction and this would never do that. I think a Xmas box should include something centrepiece-y and/or elite and a bit of variety. Dark Angels get a Primarch in theirs for instance. I’d have put Morven Vaahl and the Paragon Warsuits in, possibly in place of one rhino and the arco flagellants. But obviously there will always be scenarios where you’ve built a list and happened to want those things. I just think it should be like getting a toy at Xmas and be a bit more exciting than it is, is all. But if you’re worried about it selling out I think you’re extremely safe based on the straw poll I saw on Auspex.

Not Warhammer, but after a long wait, all my new stuff from the Walking Dead All Out War re-release has just turned up. Nice.
Such a good game and am interested to see what Mantic do with it now they’ve got the license back.

Such a good game and am interested to see what Mantic do with it now they’ve got the license back. They are really good quality figures and paint up a treat with Contrast / Speed Paints etc. I've seen it played on YouTube but not tried the rules myself - looks like a solid game so it would be great to hear about it if you get a game in. I've used a bunch of the Mantic figures in Last Days and County Road Z games - the resin scenery they do is excellent too.

OK FG hivemind, I've made a start on the 3D Sacred Band, they have embossed shields. Now I can either try and colour in the embossed bits, or leave them highlighted with a lighter pale gold drybrushing - not much more effort required for the former but it is fiddly, so it's more of an aesthetic question really - which do you prefer:

Are they historic? Either looks fine but I might be led by that, and on whether I’d get fed up with it.

For some reason my go to would be white shields with black/blue decoration for the Sacred Band. Not sure why.
I think the decoration would look best on those.
I really need to paint the rest of my epic Waterloo French... Along with everything else I need to paint.

Ah see I’ve already got Morvenn and 6 paragon suits from a previous box they did, so it’s aimed perfectly at me!

Sell me three if on sprue lol
My approach to building armies has been to start with starter sets, and add combat patrols and stuff, then buy extras with rule of cool in mind. So a box like that doesn’t give me anything not already in existing collections - as I said, I could see if you’ve approached it from a different direction, it’d possibly be just what you need

The Tau battleforce is pretty dreadful - no Crisis Suits, which are the main DDs

If there is already a lot of color, then i'd go with the full metal color, otherwise I'd colorize the symbols.

The Tau battleforce is pretty dreadful - no Crisis Suits, which are the main DDs As somebody that doesn’t know them well, it just looks like really few models - I know they are big ones though. They still had the Space Marines one from last Xmas on the shelf at Element Games a couple of weeks ago. Seems they are either smash hits or…not. One I do regret missing is the Beast Snagga stampede one.

I take it this is likely the last hurrah before Xmas?
I really would like a bit of breathing space on that next Killteam expansion so that would suit me fine.

I’d be surprised if the new edition of the Middle Earth SBG didn’t release ahead of Xmas to take advantage of the film release.
I hope it does anyway, I’ve quietly pencilled it in on my letter to Santa.

There’s a new LoTR animated film coming out before Xmas, and the new edition starter set ties in with it. The War of the Rohirrim.

Finished the last book of Tales of Heresy before starting work this morning.
I quite like the concept of a few novellas together, but it was a mixed bag.
Highlights were the Custodes story, the Church of the Lightning Storm and maybe the Dark Angels and Space Wolves ones to me - the Word Bearers one was thematically similar to those last two, but I just found Lorgar a bit cartoonishly written. I do think the Crusdade/Compliance type stories are interesting and all three sort of deal with the resignation of having to prosecute that endeavour.
The Sisters of Silence story, I can’t even remember what happened in it. That was a bit of a chore for me and is the reason this book has taken too long for me.
The Angron story at the end was just daft. I think it suffered greatly from assuming a lot of prior knowledge. This is also a criticism I’d level at the Word Bearers book, which would have benefitted greatly from having the story about Lorgar being chastised before it for even a little hint of proper context - that’s also a much more interesting story.

Tangentially, but sorta 40K related, there’s a new Dune live action series coming soon. Production values look very good. Yet to see the second film (waiting on the Sky Cinema date) and shamefully haven’t read the books.

First four Aquilons finished tonight: I think these are a bit scrappy and maybe a step down from my last lot. It’s very difficult to be crisp I’ve found with ‘bog standard’ human scale - Marines are an absolute breeze compared to these and much easier to get to a decent standard. They do look better IRL in hand/on shelf so I think a bit of it is the photography picking up everything I hate about them lol. This was also my first experience of painting over a black primer. I’ve got mixed feelings about it. I think it does definitely make for less vibrancy and is definitely harder to see what you are doing when you are looking for details, edges and barriers/transitions. It did make the weapons and in particular the metallics much easier though, and I think any missed bits become shadows by default.

But I agree, the photo is not optimal, it seems a bit washed out somehow, as if there was a faint fog over everything.

I am not looking forward to painting my Aquilons... They look like a PITA.
I've not painted over black primer before, but I have the same impression as you drake. I like my minis to pop a bit, and black primer definitely dulls ones them from the others I've seen. Also I figure you can always tone down white primed minis with shades etc.

Also re: the photo quality. You are taking your pictures on a very stark white background. If you're exposing for the dark miniatures, then the camera will struggle with the large dynamic range between minis and background, making blacks look grey and so on. I'd suggest dialling back the exposure (if you're using a mobile phone you can usually access the equivalent to this with a slider or something. Might be called "brightness"). If you want the background to be v white, edit the picture afterwards to achieve this by pushing the whites/highlights sliders. You'll retain the detail in the dark tones of the minis. If you have one of those jewellery lamps with a light, you can also light them with that, say at 45 degrees angle above. Will help with exposure. Wedding photographer brain talking
