Used as guided, contrast paints produce an uncanny valley of too much colour saturation in shadows and too little in highlights. Underpainted, with complimentary coloured highlights applied before a light application of contrast as a midtone/glaze is the best way I've found to use them. They are a very useful addition to a mini painter's arsenal, hope the Army Painter ones are as good as the preview ones look. Underpainted?

Using contrast (in the visual sense, not the Contrast Paint sense) in the initial base/prime coat instead of a solid color so paints over the top adopt the contrast instead of having to shade on top. Zenithal Shading is the most common.

My first attempt at a zenithal highlight was a speckly white from above rather than a proper coat. Took four coats of base paint colour before I gave up and they're waiting to be re-primed or stripped

Honestly, it all depends on what you’re attempting to achieve. If you enjoy painting and want to get more into it, the fancier techniques are worth playing around with, but if it’s more a “I prefer painted minis in games but want things on the tabletop as soon as possible” then none of that huuuuuugely matters. I fall into the middle of those two - I enjoy painting, but I also enjoy playing, so having half a painted box frustrates me in multiple ways, so I’ll detail the ones I like then blitz through the rest.

I got back into things with lockdown, so as much as I'd like to play, I'm stuck with building (which I love) and painting (which I want to love but I get disappointed by all the time). I'm having a good time with it anyway, but not confident enough to post results up yet

I’d say post up anyway. Some of my earlier paint jobs are horror stories but I only improved by people telling me what I could do to improve (even though I’m still pretty shit) rather than trial and error.
Wonder if we should make a separate mini painting thread. Most of mine are non-WH nowadays.

Below is the sum total of my lockdown painting.
Re-joined a new iteration of my old band and just had a lot of other general stuff going on and would say I haven't done anything Warhammer in the whole of this year.
I found it very rewarding but very, very painstakingly slow.
Have been rearranging my hideaway room today where these live and have been forced face to face with them as a result.
Really need to make a new year's resolution to finish this Stormcast army. There's a shelf with a unit of Evocators and Judicators unfinished below. It's one of those hobbies I think where you have to use momentum and self discipline to not fall off the wagon.
It took me a while to get to this OKish standard and I do worry how much I'll have lost.
I also see the Stormcast have all been updated with new units and models and do worry they've 'done a Primaris' with Sigmar. If I ever do get to play (I've never played this game) I then worry my army will basically have been power-crept out of usefullness.

I'd be up for that - I've not painted a WH40K figure for nearly 2 years but I've done a load of other stuff from Ancients up to Ultra Modern via fantasy and zombie apocalypse and I'd love to see other peoples' painting. Or we could just post it all here.

I made a plastic modelling thread some time back that I would be honoured to have used for this: fontgeek.io/thread/464/plastic-modelling-threadOtherwise people will foul this one up with talk of rule changes and battle boxes and techno-priests and heresy.

OK - this is my big boi. There's a bonus bag of Frazzles in the background.
Edit: Oops, sorry Nexus6 - didn't see your post above mine!

With the greatest of respect to Nexus, as general modelling is also awesome, I think that Games Workshop stuff is significantly its own character and ought to be its own thread.
The age group here isn't going to paint fast enough to SNAFU the thread, not that I mind seeing them anyway, I'm much more about collecting and displaying.
I know 40K is dominant but I reckon this should be a multi-purpose 'Warhammer' thread, which could cover all of their games, they've obviously done this with the shop branding too (which I hate incidentally). However I will go with the hive of course.

Done. A general table top hobby thread with loads of brilliantly painted Malifaux, Infinity and Bolt Action would be welcome too of course

Well, now that's all settled, here are some non-Warhammer minis from the Aliens board game Aliens Another Glorious Day in the Corps: Sorry for the quality of the camerawork - I'll subtitle this one 'Get away from blur you bitch' Plus an Ogre on a giant thingy to return to the Warhammer vibe:

Aw yeah. I have that Aliens game but have so far only painted a cross-eyed Ripley. I should give up trying to do eyes.

When I follow painting tips a lot of people say just do the whites of the eyes, or use a fineliner to do the pupils. I currently have one painted with a bare head and didn't even bother with that much. At that scale shading ink will infer the eyes. Depends how prize winning you want things I guess. I'm never winning any! I might have a go when I get to painting a leader type character though.

I only try to do eyes on big stuff - shading works for me on the regular size stuff (although Orcs and monsters etc. always have red eyes in my world). I paint for fun but also to play with them - I'll not be entering any painting competitions, but I want my toys to look cool when they're being blown to smithereens on the tabletop!

Maybe that’ll convince them to do a few reprints. I’m missing everything but Dreaded Ambull.
