Have you considered a new iMac Mini and taking that around with you That’s exactly what I was proposing to do and where this discussion started a page or so back. The price a 4tb M4pro would cost is completely unjustifiable though so no. Whoosh!

Photos in the latest iOS I sort of fixed by deleting all the extra widgets they added in the settings menu, I don’t care for memories etc I just want my folders without scrolling down the page

If one had £2k to spend on a new 14” MBP, would you go for M4 1TB, or M4 Pro 512GB? Both the same price. Would mainly be for photo/video stuff. Would be open to getting a T7 or something for additional storage if the Pro is substantially faster.

The M4, unless you are planning to do serious workloads.

M4 definitely, you’ll need the extra storage, I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it

Give up the raw lifestyle otto, nobody's going to notice the loss of quality in your 2008 dslr macro shots from your back garden.

I’m definitely leaning more towards the Pro. Going to need some external storage anyway, and a 4TB very fast T7 external SSD is currently £270, whereas Apple are charging £400 to increase the internal from 512GB to 1TB.

How long do you tend to keep a machine? I ran my last one for 9 years so decided to go M2 Pro 32GB when I upgraded. I'm praying it'll do me for another 9.
Oh no, I can't use the apple AI stuff without a new chip. Oh noooooo. etc.

Reddit nerds are saying: "The M2 Pro has a better GPU performance than the base M4". Pinch of salt and all that, but check the GPU situation of base M4 vs Pro. It might be that you'll see some GAINS with video/photo.

It’s still functional, showing its age a bit but it’s massive and loud and hot, and I’m getting more into video editing and doing big exports on the current one make it sound like it’s about to take off.

It might be that you'll see some GAINS with video/photo. It literally has more CPU and GPU cores, so yep! More powerful across the board. A couple of generations ago (fairly sure it was the M2) they downgraded the storage nVME speeds on the non-pro or something. So might be worth waiting to verify they haven't pulled that trick again too.

I figure that the casual iMac user they’re marketed at appreciate the sleek look and will welcome a 5 minute break to charge it, while power users will want a 2 button mouse anyway

After charging it for 2 minutes, it lasts for 9 hours. And you get notifications when the battery is low, so you won't be caught off-guard.
I believe the only people who have an issue with this design are people who don't own a Magic Mouse.

It’s a ‘least worst’ option. With that form factor the alternative is to have it on the side where it would get called in hand gunk and still be unusable with a cable anyway. It’s the shape of the thing that’s the problem, not the port.
That said, I am still improbably rocking a near 15 year old Magic Mouse that I just whip a rechargeable battery into every now and again so, like the Xbox pad, sealed units FTL

God I hated magic mice at my last job. I just bought a normal USB one and used that instead. Those things are hateful.

Using Apple Photos for a 2.5TB library makes me weep at the prospect. Absolute bloatware imo if you're serious about photography. Although I get the desire for local storage. An SSD and another synced backup SSD are what I use.
My system for wedding photography was Lightroom and a Lightroom collection per project. Then just use the OS to browse through the project folders because it's nice and snappy. If you really want something for viewing all photos across all projects, then something like Adobe Bridge is meant for that.

Mx master 3 or whatever it’s called, with the magnetic locking free spinning scroll wheel, anything else sucks for productivity imo.

Yeah look I’m not happy about using Apple Photos as my primary photo workflow app and I resisted it for a long time but I got sick of paying for an Adobe subscription when 95% of my photos these days are taken with my phone. It’s just the least worst option that I can think of.

I suppose it depends on if they let you buy the software or rent it
