New M4 MacBook Pro won’t have that issue.

I don’t mean that in a bad way. I’ve had a ‘it’s fine to just want things’ epiphany recently and have stopped trying to justify everything.

New M4 MacBook Pro won’t have that issue. He already has a laptop so I’m guessing is familiar with that?

Why not buy one for home and one for your ‘work flat’? Then you won’t have to bother carrying anything around. Plus, it will give your mistress something to do while you’re not there.

My playing away days are very much over, ten years ago that would have been a touchy subject 😅
The thing is I’m annoyed by having two machines that are hard to keep in sync, I’d love a single solution. But I’m beginning to cool on the idea to be honest. A lot of my data is on external drives and I don’t want to be carrying them with me everywhere too. But if I don’t then it rather defeats the object.

How are you so balls deep in the ecosystem without using iCloud?

I find iCloud somewhat baffling - not part of it myself but my wife is and I can never make head nor tail of what to do - especially to free up storage etc. User error/unfamiliar with the ecosystem for sure though.

How are you so balls deep in the ecosystem without using iCloud? What are you on about? Of course I use iCloud. Have you tried it? It sucks. I need my photo library on local storage on at least one device.

Can’t you tell one machine to download and store all photos all the time? Yes, that’s what I do at the moment, but it’s on external storage because my photo library is about 2.5tb to be clear, I’m thinking about having only the one device and transporting it between place (A) and place (B) where I split my time, but I can’t get a single portable device with enough on board storage, so then we get into a scenario of carrying around the device plus the storage drives, which begins to get silly.

Why on earth do you need to physically transport 2.5TB of data every time you travel? You need every single one of those files every single time and can't use cloud storage and fast Internet??
Are you stuck in 1995 or something?

Because sometimes I might need to work on a file where I am at that time. Because I’m based in two places.
There seems to be a misunderstanding. Yes I’m aware of cloud storage. I have multiple cloud backups of everything. My Apple Photos Library, which is my main photo library, is on an external disk. If I open the library without that disk being mounted, I can’t use Apple Photos on my Mac. I can work on it from my phone or my iPad because they access the photos from the cloud, but from my Mac I use local storage because that’s what I want to do for reasons (security, speed). So if I’m using my Mac to work on my photos, I need to have the volume that holds my photos library to he with me.

Ah, ok. You’re doing that thing where you’re making things over complicated and complaining the software can’t keep up, I get it now.
It sounds like you probably need an internet connected NAS. I/We have a synology for the wife’s edit stuff. Quickconnect is really good, you don’t have to twat about with port forwarding on your router to get it up and running.

Oh fucking hell the nightmares I’ve had over the years trying to get NAS to work. No, long bitter experience has taught me: local storage for my photo library.
The reason I went back to a desktop in the first place was because I thought I could get my own always-on media server up and running so that I could access all my photos from wherever I might be. I tried so many different solutions and none of them worked the way I wanted it to. In the end I gave up, put all my photos into Apple Photos, and left it all on one SSD that is constantly backed up locally and to the cloud.
The prices Apple charges for 2tb and above on its Macs is too eye watering to justify.

Just roll with it, people. Otto's reached the age where opinions and calcified and technology is to be feared. ;-)
(we should just be thankful they're not backed up to CDs)

Am I the only one who has problems with Apple Photos? Sometimes photos are stuck downloading for ages. Sometimes literally just after I’ve taken a photo it disappears off local storage and I’m there waiting for it to re-download before I can edit or share it. You can’t work like that.
fact is I found the perfect photo cataloguing solution with iView Media Pro in 2005 and then they discontinued it and nothing has worked properly since then.

Admittedly, I don’t have 2.5t of photos but everything syncs fine between my Mac, phone and iPad with iCloud and a dash of google photos.
Before that though, yes, I used to have issues on my Mac with photos because the library kept going a bit weird, same with iTunes but I’ve never really had a problem in like 10 years since I just let The Power Of The Cloud deal with it.

Apple Photos is a weird beast. Sometimes my library is synced quickly, other times I have to force it to do my bidding. I find it incredibly useful for searching for recognised things, or by date but useless for searching by camera/lens (metadata basically). Which it DOES have.
I've given up trying to use albums because it all just seems like a faff. My photos have never been more disorganised (and yet I mostly find what I'm looking for, somehow!)
Oh, and the new iOS Photos app is another step backwards in UX.
FWIW, I went for the 1TB MBP M2 which is plenty for me and is my hub. I take loads of photos and somehow have only 200GB taken up. Oooh, perhaps I need a new camera with higher res images...

Absolutely requiring the full 2.5TB of photos on hand at all times for spontaneous editing is an incredibly niche problem, what you need is a niche solution. Have you considered a new iMac Mini and taking that around with you

Ah, if you buy the M4 Pro. And it's £1200 for 4TB, which makes the base model £2600.

I'm a bit of a mac noob but I have a 2tb USB SSD hooked up to my base spec M2 mini with my photos library on that.
(I do not have 2tb of photos)

Have you considered a new iMac Mini and taking that around with you That’s exactly what I was proposing to do and where this discussion started a page or so back. The price a 4tb M4pro would cost is completely unjustifiable though so no.

Oh, and the new iOS Photos app is another step backwards in UX. I keep waiting to get used to the new app thinking it’s just a case of not being familiar with it but it’s not happening yet.
