By reducing the bezels. Not the actual size right? Also doesn't look like much of an upgrade from 16 to pro. Apart from the cunts still haven't bought oled to the normal phone so pro it is for me with the all the camera bullshit that I'll never use. /mug The tech specs say that the normal 16 does have OLED. You're right! So why the fuck doesn't it have always on display?!

Regular iPhone has been OLED since the 12, it doesn’t have the same variable refresh rate as the Pro which is why it doesn’t have always on display. Always on at 60Hz would destroy battery life

Genuine question: what’s so good about always on display?

I'm still surprised the base model doesn't do above 60hz refresh. It's not as if that's a flaship model feature these days.

Genuine question: what’s so good about always on display? I'm also wondering if it's worth paying an extra £200 for that, the variable refresh rate and the camera stuff I will never use.

I turned the always on display off straight away as I just found it annoying

It’s normalised for me now. I like the glance at the time and notifications. A phone without the always on display, to my brain, now looks like a powered off phone.
See also the Apple Watch. Couldn’t go back, even though functionally it was fine when I raised my wrist to look at it and it turned the screen on… it’s just better being always on.
Batteries have caught up to the point where you’re not harming yourself by having it on too.

Think I'm going to reluctantly upgrade to a 16 pro. Got kind of scheme going on with my sister-in-law and my niece where they buy my phone every 3 years. But not a whole lot to get excited about honestly.

Don't forget this also still has the USB-C charging in our part of the world that they introduced last year - I'll be pleased to bring my last bit of kit into that realm and stop needing multiple cables for things.
Whoop whoop, etc. But yeah, it's all incremental stuff at this point. Larger battery and more efficient components will be enough for me. I also have the hand-me-down train in effect which takes the pain out of it.

The colour additions to the base iPhones and AirPods Max are odd this year. Removing the white/silver AirPods Max option is an weird choice.

I must say my 13 pro held up well, not a scratch on the screen, without screen protector. Just a spigen case that’s hard plastic on the back and rubber around the sides. Couple of drops, but the bezel is also spotless.

My 14 is looking tatty. I decided to go sans case and, tbf, it’s held up remarkably well for saying how many times it’s been dropped, it’s just the amount of nicks on the screen which get me. I don’t know what pocket lint I have that can cause deeper grooves at level 5 but it doesn’t feel as tough as it should.
But, yeah, I have a hand me down chain too and I was thinking about picking up a 16 but I think the 17 will be the sweet spot.

I've generally done a 2 year upgrade, also handing the old model down to family members. I think with the kind of incremental upgrades we're seeing at this point that I'll be extending that window to 3 or possibly 4 years (which would make my next earliest upgrade the 18). I enjoy seeing the reveals each year but the lack of really new stuff and ridiculous price points across the entire Apple ranges just make them prohibitive, unless the batteries die early.

I'm in the family loop too.
My son has my old X which I upgraded from to the 14 Pro Max, and whilst I don't NEED a new phone I've been looking for an excuse to go smaller than the Max which really was too big for my tastes.
The X still works "fine", but to be fair he could do with an upgrade now. Not looking forward to having to dish out a phone to my daughter (10) but I did say she could have one when she goes to secondary school. I'm hoping a new battery in the X will still be serviceable as a "my first phone" come September 2025.
So yeah, count me in for a 16 Pro, but honestly it doesn't look any different to the 14 from what I can tell.

How do you guys decide on a price when you sell to family? The official apple take back value?

I think that would be a reasonable starting point. The plan here is hand-me-down (so no cost to my kids) but they'll very much be seen as xmas/birthday present.

Yeah, it's very much a quid pro quo for me rather than cash. I'm building up goodwill for my inevitable eventual infirmity.

Not 100% sure how quid pro quo would work with my sister-in-law. We're talking €250, and she's 51.

I hand down to the girl and the Mrs passes stuff onto her mum. It’s not like there’s a massive throughput, we just all switch phones/tablets/TVs every few years.

Does anyone know how fast refurbished versions of the latest models (iPhone 15) fall after the brand new models (iPhone 16) are released?
I have a £150 john lewis gift card and another 4% off which at the moment makes getting a new iPhone 16 pro just £10 more than a refurbished iPhone 15 pro.

I’m sure a secret update gets launched just before a new iPhone release, my 12 Pro is suddenly very sluggish this week

Does the new camera capture the glistening of the beard oil while you're posing in horn-rimmed glasses in front of your vinyl collection?

Hey guys, wife needs to replace her phone and would like to start doing timelapses of her artwork - what’s the cheapest phone to give the best experience for this please?
Thinking an iPhone 11 Pro could be best since it has both the 0.5 lens and the zoom lens, but is there anything on newer phones (significant jump in camera quality for example) that make a newer phone worthwhile please?

Looking at Sky Mobile for pricing and they've got:
iPhone 11 @ £14 a month iPhone 12 @ £16 iPhone 13 @ £17 iPhone 14 @ £20
That's 4 years difference in tech for the sake of a pint a month. Might not feel like a big jump, but the 14 is already 2 years old at this point, so I'd be considering 13/14 for ongoing support/updates at the very least.

So now that we finally have a properly small Mac Mini, I’m so tempted to give my nearly new M2 MBA to my daughter (who needs a laptop) and replace both it and my M1 Mini with a single M4 Mini which will fit comfortably in my bag and I can use it both at home and at my work flat (which is the use case - I have an iPad Pro for actual portability). Thoughts? (Anyone need/want an M1 Mini??)

I mean, your use case is ‘I want a new Mac Mini’, right? Realistically, it makes no real difference that it’s an inch smaller and I’m assuming you aren’t going to make any use of the extra horsepower.

That is a deep cut sir
I’m looking at whether I can now downsize from two to one Macs. I think the new Mini is definitely more portable.
And yes I want shinies

The downside of the Mac Mini is you need to power it down when you move around.
