I still think it's funny that we're spending a shitload of money on what is effectively just a big iPod Touch. We don't talk about that. Just be happy that we have the nicest piece of glass for our evening scrolling of food tiktoks.

I can recommend against using the astronomy wallpapers with this OLED screen, looks like dead pixels all over the place It really is a beautiful pane of glass isn’t it?

That was a real surprise to me - they've been overstuffing their A series chips with Tensor cores for years waiting for this moment... what a ridiculous own-goal to then make it an upgrade play. One step forward, two steps back, Apple.

Thing is, I’m super wary of the AI stuff anyway. The playful stuff seems fun but faddish. The personal assistant angle is creepy and am not keen. The ChatGPT integration can fuck right off.
So what’s left are the OS updates and boy they were underwhelming. I had been kind of hoping for a big step forward in iPadOS to match the new hardware.

I had been kind of hoping for a big step forward in iPadOS to match the new hardware. For years people hope for this to happen at each WWDC, only to be disappointed again and again.

The new ‘hide your porn from your kids’ feature in iOS is useful though

The biggest thing from the entire event. Pause feature for Apple Fitness so we don’t have to cheat our goals on rest or sick days. How can it have taken so long to have such a basic feature? Then I saw that they’re just adding a calculator to the iPad and it all makes sense.

Yeah going big on AI was not what I wanted to see. I hadn’t clocked that it was geared towards the latest and greatest phone only though, I may have zoned out by then. Also, no Journal app for iPad or Mac again. I’ll continue to stick with Day One for another year then.

Christ I hadn't noticed that Journal is phone only. WTF.
It does make you wonder, it really does. You would think they would invest a bit more in porting their own apps to the platform, never mind pushing other devs to do it. I could really do with a native bluesky app on the ipad too, as it stands it won't let me use the web interface but defaults to the daft letterboxed phone app on that lovely big screen.
It's a beautiful machine and really wonderful for watching video and, er, following youtube Procreate tutorials, but it could be so much more.

There may be a security risk, there may not. It’s up there with cameras in phones though, along with the myriad of things on phones that already listen in on things, or can do. Should probably just get a proper security person to address and advise.

I've not tried the web interface on iPad, I'll have a look in a minute. Is there no way of starting it then forcing a "save to homescreen" icon to make it behave like an app? Threads has that now, and works great. Yeah, I'm happy with my purchase but unless you're heavily invested in taking "beautiful, magical notes" it's still just a consumption device for me in the main.

Apple are great at introducing new features that people don’t really want or need. I see nothing that will make me change my mind. M4 Mac Mini or Studio is what I’m interested in.

I thought the iPhone mirroring stuff looked great. Thought there’d be a more positive reaction to it.

I mean, it's clever but I'm not sure when the last time my iPhone wasn't directly in reach when I was at my Mac.

Yeah, it's another one of those features that I can't see me ever using, a bit like the iPad as a second screen for my Mac.
might be a bit more useful for moving content from my Mac to my phone, since continuity is not always v reliable.

This whole reveal is purely to keep Wall St happy, not you or me Its the equivalent of me including '33% Comms Efficiency Saving' in my monthly MI after I take a word out of my email signature. If you've got nothing to report, you've got to report something.

Looking forward to generating AI slop on my phone, anyway. Here you go mum: turned you into a cartoon superhero.

There's AI and there's AI. I do like and use some stuff you'd define as AI. The 'this is a Persian Cat' identifying feature in the picture gallery is great, remembering that I get a coffee at 10.30 and offering to play music on the kitchen Sonos is handy and offering me my authenticator app when I unlock my phone during the work day is cool. Unobtrusive things that make life a bit better by an imperceptible degree.
I'm not so much interested in a full on personal assistant.

Is AI in iPhone really that much of a problem though? Both the Pixel and the Samsung Galaxy have had Gemini for months and most of the useful features are just handy lazy shortcuts such as transcribing an audio recording of a meeting into bullet pointed minutes, or auto-writing emails you just can't be arsed to make a proper reply to. You can just ignore all the other gimmicky shit.

It's gonna necessitate Apple going from 'Privacy of our users is paramount!' to 'weeell... you know.. what's total privacy compared to a little convenience?'
