Had the 13” M4 iPad Pro here since launch, and it’s a game changer. I can believe how light it is. It’s almost *too* thin; I’m scared of breaking it. But what a device. Also replacing a 2019 12.9” verson which has been a great operator for five years… but this new one is on another level entirely. Shame not enough apps properly use the Pencil Pro though. Hopefully a bunch will get updated for WWDC.

I know it’s never been their jam but have to wonder if Apple are at risk of pricing themselves out of the mass market with their high end pricing. I know many often find the means when it comes to tech they want but I wonder if they have a Plan B with more affordable model lines in the offering at some point?

Well you can pick up an entry level for £349 now, which isn't too bad really. More techy features you're going to have to pay.

Yeah exactly - a slightly odd take when they go all the way from 349 to 4000. You pays yer money, you takes yer pick. And if you're smart you avoid the obvious laddering they've built into the pricing.

I'm still dithering over a new iPad. Think I'll see what WWDC brings. I hover over the buy button, I wander into the Apple Store, and then I walk away thinking why do I need to spend this money just for the sake of occasionally fucking about in procreate. And yet and yet, there are those two or three regular use cases where the ipad just fits where neither my phone nor my laptop do. Grr.

What I will add, is that getting the 11" M4 has given me the same "oh yeah, now I get it" feeling as the iPad Air 2 did when I first got that.

Well I gave in and bought an 11" Air. My previous iPad was a Pro, bought in 2020. My first impressions: am I imagining it or is the screen really a lot more shit? I'm sat in my office with the blinds drawn and the iPad at full brightness and it feels dim, dimmer than my iPhone for sure, which isn't surprising, but also a lot dimmer than my shitty work monitor. Have I got a faulty unit? Beyond that I'm finding it hard to get used to going back to touch ID but I will get used to it. I couldn't justify the additional expense for the Pro, I don't need the extra processing power and the only other meaningful difference (or so I thought) is the screen.

I'd be surprised if the new Air screen was as bad as you say on a fully functioning model? That said, the Pro screens are so damn good I did factor that in to my decision to not step backwards to an Air. I figured that with my MBP and iPhone 14 Pro that I would notice the difference.
What I would say, is that if you're not happy with it definitely take it back ASAP before apathy sets in and you start to think "Oh it's fine, I'll get used to it."

Cheers Binks - I think what I'll do is compare it to my wife's Air this weekend to see if the brightness levels are similar, that way at least I can rule out a faulty unit, and then judge on whether I've made a false economy while I'm still within my statutory cool-off period (14 days here in Belgium).

The screen on the new pro is crazy good. It’s hard to describe, but when watching stuff it looks…..real? If you can afford it, anyone that’s going to use it as a streaming machine, I really would recommend the pro. Shame they don’t do a kind of air plus or something, with the innards of a regular iPad with the pro’s screen.

There's only a nominal 100 nit difference (500 vs 600) on the Air versus older Pros. Compared to an office monitor, which if properly calibrated should only be putting out 150, it should be possible to get considerably brighter. Something dodgy with the auto light sensor perhaps? Try turning off auto brightness and see if that lets you get higher.
Or maybe you're just used to 120hz now and can't go back?

I dunno, it's strange, normally I'm the last person to notice any minor visual differences, I'm the guy that will happily play a game for years without realising that I've got all the gfx settings on low. But I am noticing it here, so I will definitely do a comparison with my wife's Air to see if there is an issue. I've tried all the various tweaks suggested to see if it makes a difference (it doesn't). Anyway we all know where this is heading.

Solved it. It wasn't in Display & Brightness, it was hidden in Accessibility -> Display & Text Size -> Reduce White Point which was set to 'on' and 80% by default. I mean WTF. As soon as I turned that off I had a normal screen again.

Crikey. I find the default brightness of most devices way too harsh unless I'm in direct sunlight.

It's an odd one isn't it? But it has got me to wondering whether I should have gone for a Pro anyway, and I think I might have found a way to justify returning the Air and taking the upgrade haha

Hilariously I also had the screen dimming issue with this on first setup, but now I know what’s up with that it’s of course fine
I would find it hard to put my finger on exactly why the Pro feels so much more shiny but it does. Face ID makes a massive difference actually. Touch ID on an ipad feels wrong. And there is a visible difference in screen quality. So relax Binks, you did the right thing splurging the kids’ inheritance on more unnecessary tech. 👍

It does make me wonder though, if I had the white point dimming set to be on by default on two separate brand new devices, how many other people are going to have that and not realise that it’s a setting and not the actual screen? Why are Apple gimping new screens out of the box? Weird.

I wonder if this is a territory specific issue? Seems really strange to have this enabled on 2 separate devices. 2 separate models even!

They weren't even in the same territory - I got the Air in Brussels and the Pro in the UK. I wonder if it's linked in some way to my Apple ID - I think I had signed into both devices. But then I've never even seen that setting before.

I still think it's funny that we're spending a shitload of money on what is effectively just a big iPod Touch.
