Yes I think you're both right and they don't want to ruin the launch of the headphones. I was forgetting they'd released them already.
Sonos probably didn't want to sit on a ton of stock until the delayed app was finished, so just sold them anyway.

Judging by how much of a shit show it’s been, it wouldn’t surprise me if the headphones had been ready to ship for some time while they tried to sort the software out and eventually they just couldn’t put it off anymore.
They must have known how wank it was but just couldn’t sit on the stock anymore.

Bit creepy that my Sonos bridge still shows up in my account, and I can see it's online…

In addition to the app taking a minute to load on my Android phone, my speakers now refuse to play my Spotify session by pressing the PLAY button on either speaker.
I used to get in from work listening to music on my headphones, then simply press PLAY on a speaker to transfer the music. This won't work at all now, although pressing and holding PLAY does still pair speakers.
I'm getting seriously fed up with it all now. I've reset my router, reinstalled the app, turned everything on and off again. I'm a software engineer FFS, but this is beyond me. Everything worked fine for years, then Sonos rolled out this dreadful new software, and now everything's fucked. This is surely class action lawsuit territory.

Access to an iPhone or iPad? Sonophone/sonopad apparently works wonders.
Mine is slow as shit but does at least find my one speaker. Despite what they say, it's not your wifi. They fucked it good and proper.

The nested corner radii piss me off: note how the control bar doesn't sit flush at the bottom of the screen and uses a different radius to the device. I liked it when it was flush with the bottom of the viewport instead of awkwardly hovering above it.

They fucked it good and proper. Ah I was referring to the physical PLAY button on each speaker. The app does (eventually) find the speakers, and I can control them okay-ish via the app, although it seems to constantly lose them after switching apps. I don't have access to iOS, but I've got a Mac. To be fair, I can just use the Spotify app 99% of the time, but losing the physical play button functionality just adds to the list of annoyances. I'd be more inclined to forgive Sonos if not for the fact that the previous version of the software worked well!

Ah. My play button works but only use it for radio tbh.

I've been considering getting a Sonos Arc or smth for several months now, but dipping my head in here and reading about the software issues has seriously put me off.
Seemingly with that email Sonos realises just how much they've fucked up.

I bet he's going to get lots of emails of the "you're shit" variety.
Justifiably.

Do the points listed in the Roadmap actually cover all the fixes required experienced by people in this thread?

Who knows. They’ve been having quite a few discounts recently: the headphones are already discounted. And before the full CEO missive, I’d had another version which had no subject and just contained the signature graphic.
Heck, if the app actually loaded and became usable within a few seconds of launch it would probably help. I hate having to wait for it to render and then hydrate with content.

I have to be honest, I've been less and less satisfied since the stopped the desktop app. Yeah, they sound good - if you can actually get the software to work and something to play. But they've become more hassle than they're worth and the desperate data slurping, pushing of their subs and radio combined with the utterly awful lack of functionality tells me where they're headed as a company and means I won't be buying any more again, no matter what they do.

It's a bit more responsive now but still not great. Recently played takes minutes to appear, if at all. Still a good 5/10 seconds to connect. And still no widget on Android!

This is all true too. But I don't know of others that do the same thing without the same quibbles. Denon HEOS stuff any good?

Dougs, oh I haven't even started to think about investigating alternatives. No idea what you could replace them with?

Ironically, they also fucked up the ‘sorry if you feel we fucked up email’.
I got a an email from Sonos last night with NO SUBJECT that was completely blank apart from a jpg of that guys signature. Genuinely made me laugh.

I've only got a Play 1 for the kitchen, so pretty limited on impact for me. But would be good to know of others as and when I look to upgrade. Priority for me is a new sub for my (non-Sonos) 5.1 in the living room though!

I think if you mine CEX for older models, you still can’t really beat them for what they are. The One SL is still a great speaker for the money and sound really good in a pair.
I wouldn’t buy any of the newer stuff as it’s incredibly poor value but I’d be happy to still add odds and sods to my setup if I saw a bargain.

They've gone from the only game in town to being the village idiot in fairly short order.
If I was looking to get some audio equipment, I would have previously gone Sonos without thinking twice. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole now.
My proper 5.1 is a Yamaha. They have an app/smart speaker platform called Music cast, and there are Sonos like units in that ecosystem. The software is pretty bare bones but *that's fine* as it just works. I'd probably look to expand that now if I was itching for a new smart speaker like thing.

I've got a Yamaha Soundbar and it's been really good, would definitely consider a couple of smart speakers from that system.

Is the Sonos Arc affected by all this guff? I'm finally close to buying it but this app drama is really putting me off.

The whole range is. They've rewritten the entire software system from the ground up: unit firmware and controller software. If you add a new unit it forces you to update as part of the registration process, so there's no way around it.

For, basically, turbo Amazon echos, I’m still happy with them and they still work, basically, fine for me.
The only thing I regret is the AV solution. If I had my time again I’d invest that money in a really good pair of active stereo speakers and maybe a sub for the TV because I don’t really give a shit about surround and the versatility would be a big plus.

For whatever it’s worth, there’s been absolutely no impact to my set-up (Arc, sub, 2x Era 300s) in the way I use it (Apple TV remote controls the TV, switching between apps and the PS5/Switch, and iPhone or pad controlling music streaming). It all just works, and I’ve had no drop outs since they forced the upgrade (I’d guess this is coincidence but still a positive regardless).

There's some suggestion that they migrated to mDNS, which has knackered a lot because of old/shit routers.

Actually, that is a good point. I want to turn off the 2.4ghz WiFi but the old play ones still use it. Disgrace.

Huh. I turned off 5GHz a while back. Everything works a lot more reliably over WiFi now.
