So, I posted this in music the other day. School boy error.
EG had a pretty dedicated Sonos user base (me being one of them) and hopefully they’re here too.
So, couple of questions from me.
IKEA Symfonisk, what are the impressions of;
1. the new wall art speaker or 2. the cheapest option, the ‘bookshelf’ one.
I’m looking at adding a speaker to the baby’s nursery and tempted by the wall art but the relatively inexpensive route of the bookshelf is tempting if it sounds good enough for a small space.
Thoughts if you’ve heard either of them?

So, I have a bookshelf one. I’ve seen a tear down on YT of it and the innards are the same as a play one. I also have play ones and I can’t tell any difference, really. It might be missing a bit of low end due to the cab design (and it’s humidity proofing) but it’s basically the same. I use play ones as rears and have them on some really nice sanus stands which the IKEA ones don’t fit otherwise I would have swapped them out. Not heard the picture one but this guy does a decent unboxing so you can see what it looks like (he also has the other IKEA ones on earlier vids) youtu.be/1bw8FIDjEGY

Bookshelf one is good. If I recall correctly, it's just re-housed version of the Sonos 1 internals.

I've also read on multiple occasions that the bookshelf speakers are basically the same as Ones. The IKEA speakers are cheaper, can be used in either orientation, and have integrated mounting holes. I would only buy them if you want to use them vertically on a bookshelf or horizontally as a shelf or nightstand, because a One is a bit more unobtrusive when placed on its own IMO. As soon as you need more flexibility when wall mounting (e.g. tilting), the IKEA speakers are out. I have a pair of One SLs (same as Ones but no mic) as surrounds for my Arc. The way I have mounted them, the Ones (and only the expensive, but excellent Sonos wall mount) were the only choice:

While I’m here, I committed a bit of an audiophile faux pas last recently. I was looking at upgrading my turntable kit and also found myself sticking on a record and wandering about the house, wishing I could pipe the turntable through to the other speakers.
Long story short, the turntable is now hooked up to the line in on a pair of Sonos 5s. I wanted to keep the set up minimal so was looking at KEF LSX for ages but ended up with the 5s just for practical reasons.

Several reasons, really. I’d budgeted for the KEF and an eBay code brought 2x 5s to basically the same price from Peter Tyson.
And even if the whole point of the exercise was purely to get the turntable to an existing set of speakers I would have still pushed the budget for a 5 (especially with a discount code). If you don’t need the line out, I just can’t imagine how you would stack the numbers up for a port when you are most of the way to the same functionality AND a fantastic speaker, even if it sat there doing nothing most of the time.
Basically, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy one. They are disgustingly expensive and that’s from someone who just jizzed nearly 900 quid on Sonos gear.

That said, I did look at gen 2 connects/connect amps but they are still pretty pricey themselves.
And hideously ugly.

Not Sonos but I’m now using HomePod Minis + Apple TV combo for everything and it is fucking awesome.
I’ve also completely ditched my TV remote (LG Magic Remote for CX 55). The new ATV 4K remote is all I use.
It’s a game changer. Sort of glad I didn’t go Sonos route because Apple integration is so damn good.

The ATV 4K also works nicely with the Sonos Arc, though at a significantly higher cost, if you want to try and reduce external streaming devices and remotes.

Just read that Sonos are increasing prices across the board on the 12th, citing supply chain issues. Bit rich considereing the margins they must already have in place.

That looks interesting. Could be an option for the bedroom to integrate the Sonos without looking too weird.

For that, the bookshelf speakers are even better, as they can be wallmounted horizontally and used as a nightstand.

www.sonos.com/en-gb/newsroom/sonos-unveils-beamYay! Sonos is starting to support HD audio services! Boo! Half my speakers wont support it..... And the new beam has atomos and they are patching DTS into the old one so 'yay' overall, I guess.

The running jokes end today.
I am wondering about a trade up to the new beam. It seems like a nice little upgrade.

Anyone here got the Symfonisk picture frame things? Considering a pair for my rears instead of Ones, how does the sound compare?

My friend has the speaker frames but I’ve not heard them. I’m tempted to get the bookshelf speakers to complete the surround set up with the Arc and Sub in the living room or at least as a stop gap until I get the actual ones. Got a symfonisk in the kitchen and really like it. Half tempted to get 2 for the bedroom to use with the AppleTV

Any Sonos Five owners? Thinking about placing one on a cabinet (a bit over 2 metres high) in the kitchen/dining table/living room area (open floor plan). Good idea or not?

Any reason you can’t wall mount it so you can control the angle of dangle?

Well it would be possible, but I guess the cabinet would provide the best coverage. I could elevate the back with a piece of wood or something so it is angled down?

I dunno. The 5 is proper speaker and quite butch. I would want it properly planted. Mine are on stands to get the best out of them. But you never know, true play might be able to compensate for it.

Yeah I'm unsure myself... on the one hand, it could fill the space with awesome sound, on the other hand it could sound mediocre and I'd be better off with a One.
