Mine hasn’t updated yet but I do rarely use it. I either connect directly from a music app or bark orders via Alexa.
I suppose that was the intent. A misguided attempt to increase interaction with it.

Yes you're probably right. Unfortunately I use the app frequently to toggle the 'speech enhancement' and 'night sound' modes on my Beam.
Hopefully Sonos will fix it, but in the meantime the 1 minute boot time is going to annoy the fuck out of me. There should be laws against making existing products significantly worse.

Headphones finally exist then. Sonos Ace, £449. Out of my budget, but being able to instantly flick TV audio between my Arc and the headphones is a very appealing feature.

Yeah, that's something I actually really want. Currently I can only do that via PS5, which is fine, but a bit clunky.
I think I'm going to get them...

I would wait for the proper review. The Verge preview makes it sound really disappointing.

I thought they were very positive about it!
A lot to spend on a pair of headphones though so won’t be getting them unless they get great reviews.

Unless you have the most up to date top of the range Sonos soundbar, these are just another set of BT wireless headphones. At a premium price. It's an expensive accessory to a closed proprietary system, a bit like their sub.
Just as they introduced their home cinema set ups, this is a bit of a change in direction for them.

Unless they have basically the same functionality as a speaker, there are a lot of good headphones in that price bracket. I don’t have an arc, so it’s academic but I would rather get AirPods Pro for the Apple TV.

To have a pair of wireless headphones that I can also use with the TV (via my Arc) AND has no lag (for gaming) is enough for me to get the Ace. I'll wait until Black Friday though, by then most bugs should be fixed and all announced functionality actually available. Also I should have had the opportunity to listen to them in a store. I know I can return them, but I'd still like to listen to them first before ordering.

Honestly my experience with Sonos in the last couple of years means I wouldn't ever consider paying their premium prices again.

My experience with Sonos has been generally good until the latest app update, whereby the app is effectively now broken on Android 11.
It'd be trivial, but the app is the linchpin to the Sonos system, so it has to work... it's not like Sonos provide you a physical remote control for their speakers.

The Facey and Reddit groups are full of some very angry people. It kinda works for me, but I only have one speaker. It's laggy as fuck though and prone to chucking up an error. And where's my widget, dammit!

I’ve avoided the worst of it by never using the app in the first place. I either connect to the speakers directly from an app/airplay or bark an order at it via Alexa.
I only really use it to switch to line in which is now harder to find but, yeah, I’ve always avoided the app because it’s always been shit. They are clearly trying to drive people to engage with the app more, though, which seems to be mainly responsible for the enshittening

Plus half the issues are not related to the app (or at least not obviously), like songs cutting out for seconds at a time.
My Playbar works fine, but that's only ever used for TV audio via optical in. All my other speakers (running Spotify) are, er, spotty.

I always start music through the Spotify app or just voice commands, but there's no way of toggling the voice enhancement and night mode on the Beam other than using the app, so I'm forced to use it. Music playback's been okay for me, although when I transferred music between speakers the other day, the previous speaker continued to play, which has never happened before. Just a guess, but I get the impression Sonos have ushered in a new version of their architecture (maybe to support the headphones) which would explain all the issues, and why they've had to rebuild the app from scratch (hence it doesn't work properly and is missing most of the old features).

Being a povvo Android user, and with an older Play 1, I have to use the app. Thankful it mostly works though, which is more than for some it seems.

If you use Spotify you can use the Spotify app instead - but that's not much better ime.

Thankfully, I never have to use the app. We stream music via Airplay, and turning on/off and changing volume of the Arc is done via the Apple TV remote.

Thankfully, I never have to use the app. We stream music via Airplay, and turning on/off and changing volume of the Arc is done via the Apple TV remote. Same. The whole ecosystem seems to be a bit spotty occasionally. Enough to be annoying. Once a month or so I'll turn the TV on and the speakers won't have connected, and it just becomes a frustrating 10 minutes of turning everything off and on again until they all play nice. Coupled with the fact that the Arc and 300 rears just can't do proper surround for games where specific enemy placement is vital (online shooters) and I'm slowly getting more annoyed with it all. (For anything cinematic, and non-competitive gaming, it's good.) I'm starting to miss my old set-up quite a bit, and wondering if the new Sony Quad Theater would be better.

I'm back for another grumble because my Sonos system (Beam + Move) has gone from bad to worse.
The app still takes around 1 minute to launch (Android 11) and sometimes fails to launch at all, and initially this was my only issue after the app update, but now other issues have crept in.
Pressing PLAY on a speaker now fails to start the last Spotify session most of the time.
If music is playing, pressing PLAY on a non-playing speaker now either fails to transfer the music, or fails to stop the music on the playing speaker, so the same song will play on both speakers, but completely out of sync.
Sometimes I can't control the volume via the Spotify app (my only way of circumventing the Sonos app).
Also, the more I use it, the more I realise the new UI makes no sense and gets the very basics wrong, making it difficult to simply navigate between the overall view of your system and an individual speaker.
Worst of all, the new Sonos app seems to have killed performance on my phone, and I get frequent stuttering now, even when not using the Sonos app.
Has anyone else got any of these issues? I'm half tempted to try setting up the system from scratch again, but I may end up in an even worse situation.

Not as severe but sounds pretty common. My issues (Android 14) are more it's laggy (especially volume), have to enable "recently played" every time and no widget. And for a while, I couldn't tidy up the home screen. They've proper shat the bed.

They're complicit in their user's misery because they haven't even acknowledged rolling the app back to the previous version as a solution, despite it being the best solution for their customers. They'd win back a lot of respect in my eyes by doing this.
The fact that the previous app worked well is the worst thing about the situation. I'm going to have to side-load the old app I think, because Sonos haven't even acknowledged the Android 11 issues.

They couldn't/wouldnt do that because I think the whole point of the update was to jazz it up for the headphones. A rolled back app wouldn't support their latest product.

I highly suspected the update was to facilitate the headphones, but I didn't know that for certain.
They could / should roll the app back though. The long-term damage to their reputation could potentially outweigh any short-term gains on the headphones. They could still sell the headphones, with the caveat that you can't connect them to the Arc yet.

You manage them through the app. All the setup and that stuff is done through them. They would be useless without it or at least very gimped.
Catch 22, really. Go back, screw the headphones and ruin your product launch or push on and annoy everyone else.

On android you can install whatever version you want by getting it from apkmirror. You then just need to disable updates.
v16.1 was the last one that worked. If you're on iOS, I believe you're fucked. However you will be forced to update if you try adding any new units. It's a bit of a clusterfuck all round. Yeah, it does all look like it was forced by the release date of the headphones, and they couldn't/wouldn't delay that to get the software sorted. They can't now rollback officially as they've sold a bunch of headphones.
