There’s absolutely no reason why I need a better chip or hardware. I was playing MK8 with friends this weekend - first time in ages - and it was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had. So much fun and it looks incredible.
Metroid looks perfect too. Literally no reason for a Switch 2.

Your lack of imagination is disturbing. 4K so you can actually put it on your TV without cutting your eyes. Better CPU so the games load faster. I love MK8 as much as the next guy, but those loads are interminable.
So yeah. No.

I love the Switch, but it definitely is due a proper upgrade. Especially since the tech is so old now and some major exclusives are apparently at sub-res and dropping frames (like Hyrule Warriors).

It looks lovely, but I cannot justify it given I literally never use the switch. Obviously want it though, but already got the steam deck reserved which I’m proper excited about. Will be picking up Metroid though, and hopefully the next proper iteration of the switch will also be OLED.

I said I use it portably. So, no, no need for an upgrade to 4K for me.

It's not just resolution though..I mean the current model struggles to run lots of first party Nintendo games at a locked framerate. Imagine that, stuttering in major Nintendo franchises like Zelda and Mario.
Too much focus on "4k", that's not the sole benefit of new hardware. I want a return to the days when Nintendos output had locked performance as a given.

On the SeriesX and PS5 the fast loading is the most next gen thing about them. Plus more grunt might mean bigger tracks with more variety. More racers. Basically your point is indefensible. You’re the kinda person that’ll still be sitting cross legged in front of a 13” CRT with a Spectrum. “Eight colours is enough for me. Chaos is the best fucking game ever and I don’t need no upgrades!”

I mean, I wouldn't say no to a new 4K Switch, but I do still play Chaos on the Speccy now and then!

Plus more grunt might mean bigger tracks with more variety. More racers. Surely it won't if it comes out as a Switch pro. It's too soon for a Switch 2, and a mid gen refresh will mean that games are still developed with the base model in mind. I doubt Nintendo would allow brand new features or exclusive games.

Why's it too soon? It's 4 years old. 2023 will be 6 years, which is my guess, but even next year would be ok time-wise.

I love MK8 as much as the next guy, but those loads are interminable. So yeah. No. Better CPU might help games load a little bit faster, but if they stick to eMMC storage (and they probably will, if they wanna keep it affordable) then there's no way they can make the load times tolerable. They need better tech for that. Or at least some kind of DirectStorage-like API. Except that probably won't happen either, because it needs to be expandable via regular shitty SD cards. They *could* make it only expandable with proprietary faster cartridges, but who wants a repeat of the Vita? Of course, now that the Vita's no more, and compared to 2010 people are much more used to paying high prices for good technology, so something like that might actually be feasible.

Tbf Mario Kart is one of those games that looks fine as it is and will probably never age (though higher res and fancier effects is always nice). Even as a portable it could do with extra power though (within reason, as long as heat output and battery life are not affected). Bowser's Fury is only 30fps in handheld, and imagine all those third-party ports running at native res and minimum locked 30fps.

Chaos is a genuine GOAT contender... but if we press pause at that point, we never get XCOM. AND THEN WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE?!
I'm glad that Worlds is happy with 2015 vintage hardware and basically a reskin of MK7 - I am too - but it really doesn't take much imagination to see how even slightly beefier hardware could be a game changer for the Switch. I'd pick up a late gen refresh in a heartbeat, same goes for a full on Switch 2, even though it has fallen out of favour in Castle Phattso since Series X and a newer PC came along. Plus lockdown negating it's main USP (although I still take it to the loo, obvs).

I know with some other stores, they'll keep them with the couriers the week before and won't send dispatch notes until the same morning. They've taken payment at the start of the week so we'll see.

Mine is Argos and no dispatch notification yet. I expect my Metroid CE from Shopto may beat it.

It’s up there with PS5, and it’s over 4 years old. They don’t need to upgrade it. Have fun.

Just seen Metroid on an OLED switch and it’s fucking beautiful. In fact, better looking than many of my PS5 games.
Simply, stunning.

The fact that there’s an upgraded version launching tomorrow, that you’ve said you want, defeats your point pretty spectacularly.

Mine is on schedule from Smyths. Currys also honoured the misprice on Metroid and that's arriving tomorrow. First time I've ever managed to get in on a deal like that (£26.99)

We'll see, I guess, but I can't see it being next year with the OLED launch this week, ongoing chip shortages, and all the named companies denying it being a thing. No doubt there's going to be a 4K Switch 2 in the pipeline, just a bit further out. As Derbs this seems very unlikely for next year if you take into account that production lines have been booked for the next few years with Nintendo not in there for anything new. I imagine the 4k switch probably was coming with the oled screen but with chip shortages for anything on a different fab they couldn't get anywhere near the number they wanted and just used the original model with a different screen.
