Apparently launch Switches are worth quite a lot on eBay too, due to them being hackable.

Yeah some of the videos are pretty wild, screen looks gorgeous. Got it with Metroid coming next week, can't wait.

I'm getting one. For some reason I ended up with both a launch version for the telly and a switch lite for handheld, which got a bit annoying transferring saves. So selling 'em both and getting the OLED.
Gonna be annoying next year when the prOLED comes out. Oh well.

I don't see it happening at this point. Next iteration will be whatever the Switch 2 ends up being.

Just went to power up my launch Switch unit in preparation for Metroid Dread... est morte. :-(
Is this a sign from the universe to get an OLED Switch for the 25 hours a year I play it? I... I think so.

I guess it'd only be annoying if it's backward compatible.... though obviously that would be a good thing. Technically. I know they don't usually do that, but wonder if they will this time? There are so many digital indie games on Switch, would be a bit odd to not have them on the next one. Then again, it is Nintendo.

The Gameboys and DSes had a fair amount of backwards compatiblity, e.g. I played Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, and Gameboy advance carts on my GBA. So in the handheld realm it's not unheard of for Nintendo.

I'd 100% bet on it being backwards compatible, they'll want to keep the Switch brand for the next console and keep compatibility with all existing games. And yeah, I also think the next Switch will just be the Switch 2 now.

I think so. Has the battery been left to drain for a while? The Switch does have an issue where, if the battery is thoroughly discharged, it will not boot even if charged back up to full. I've seen people manage to resuscitate a switch in this state by leaving them on charge for ~24 hours and then holding the power button down for about 30 seconds, but this isn't a guaranteed fix, I'm afraid.

If that recent Bloomberg article is to be believed (and they claim to have 11 verified sources), there are new hardware dev kits out in the wild that have 4k output docked and are backwards compatible with current Switch hardware.
Make of that what you will!

Aye, that's my last avenue now. I'll leave it on for (another) soak charge overnight tonight and see if it feels like waking up tomorrow.

Well that's £310 saved. Sonos Beam Mk 2 you say? Why the fuck not. It's three hundred off!

Make of that what you will! Not sure I'd trust owt Bloomberg comes out with, they were the ones banging the drum about the Switch pro, before the oled was announced. At this point it's like saying I predict that there will be an 8k console within this decade.

I think it's an absolute dead cert that there's a 4K devkit doing the rounds - modest CPU and GPU update, but with DLSS style hardware onboard to get from 1080p internal to 4K on the screen. It's just a market choice for Nintendo. Why go to the expense of releasing a new bit of hardware when you're already making cash hand-over-fist with the existing one.
Bloomberg have 11 sources, and didn't back down when Nintendo called them on it.

Yeah, seems close to nailed on that there will be a new one next year. Probably vastly more powerful. Completely irrationally, I can only hope that it's in SOME way inferior to the OLED, to stave off buyers remorse.... else I guess I'll be hitting ebay again very soon, and writing off another £100 or so.

I mean, I don't doubt that there are 4K devkits out there, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will release next year. Also, with Nintendo being Nintendo, I reckon they'll happily make do with the current Switch models until sales really start to tail off.

I'd be inclined to agree. The only thing that lends a little credence to the possibility is that Nintendo came out and addressed the story. That has a vague whiff of "yes we're about to fuck these people over with a better model in about 12 months time, but papa needs a new pair of shoes in the interim so we need people to keep buying Switch consoles" which is why the relatively sedate upgrade to the screen rather than the underlying hardware on the OLED model.
Time will tell. This time next year the PS5 and Series X should be really hitting their stride, so to retain mindshare Nintendo have to do something. They won't go head-to-head on raw specs, but they just need to put magic words like "4K" and "HDR" on the box to keep their place in the race.
Plus it's genuinely due a proper successor by that point. Five years for hardware that was outdated the day it was punted out of the factory is a good run. Switch 2: 50% raw CPU and GPU uplift, and DLSS magic to get it to 4K. No raytracing. Same chassis, full backwards compatibility. Add GameCube and Wii to the emulator pile. Job done.

2023 at the earliest, I reckon. Can't see it being next year with the OLED launching now.

I'm not sure the OLED is that big a deal? If some notional Switch 2 were to just continue in the same form factor just with more grunt this might just be a manufacturing stepping stone anyway. I guess we'll see - if sales go off a cliff, they go sooner. If not, later. Not having many tentpole games doesn't seem to have hurt them this year at any rate.

We'll see, I guess, but I can't see it being next year with the OLED launch this week, ongoing chip shortages, and all the named companies denying it being a thing. No doubt there's going to be a 4K Switch 2 in the pipeline, just a bit further out.

Reviews are really fantastic. Most people saying it’s a game changer for handheld, and those who were playing it in docked before are now using portable with the OLED.
I bought a Lite just two months ago. Fuck that, I’m selling it and getting this OLED + Dread.

Are purchases tied to your Nintendo account or do they still do the backwards 3DS model where they're tied to your unit? I'm considering a Switch OLED purchase as well, but not if I lose access to my purchases.

Nah, you just have one master console and you can change that. I've had two for a while, it's a pain in the arse with saves but you can play your games on both. Just not at the same time or something. Anyway it's easy to change.

I have two but I thought purchases are tied to your account which facilitates the master and subordinate console

On the Switch 2 thing. I saw that Moore's Law Is Dead leak youtuber guy speculating that basically they're trying to get rid of all of this generation's chips, and likely have had a deal with Nvidia lined up for the next one for a while. Given how fast it started flying off the shelves that's pretty plausible, and apparently stacks up with something around Nvidia's chip development. I forget all the details but it all sounds pretty plausible and would mean a significantly more capable Switch next year is likely. And given dev kits are out already, that seems pretty nailed on to me.

Thing looks bloody stunning on the DF review. Really can't wait to get Metroid Dread in it Friday night.
