Lots of positive previews coming out today to build up the hype for next Friday. Properly looking forward to this.

Yep, sounds really good. And looks particularly gorgeous on the OLED model.
The venue Nintendo set up for the previews looks great too:

Can't bloody wait... Hopefully shopto come through for me and deliver a bit early.
Still a bit gutted about some of the spoiler moments from trailers though, poor form on Nintendo's part there.

Yeah, I’m starting to get a little hyped for this. Seems Nintendo first party games (albeit developed out of house) seem to be all I get day one nowadays. Last one being Mario 3D World earlier this year.

In preparation I've been playing Zero Mission for the last few weeks. It's taken a lot longer than I thought, as I was hoping to play Fusion as well before Dread comes out. Oh well.
How close is Zero Mission to the original? Because I'm genuinely amazed at the turn it takes near the end.

It's been years since I played it, but from what I remember it was supposed to be a loose remake with a lot more content than the original (similar to Samus Returns) and a few twists thrown in.

The original lacks a map and copies/pastes entire rooms, making the game feel intentionally disorientating. Its much harder than any other game in the series due to the lower amount of health you have and the limited player movement. Weapon upgrades permenently replace one another and cannot be swapped out. Its secret routes are extremely well hidden and require the player to have spotted clues to their existence elsewhere on the map (or spot clues in the game's manual).
All in all, unless you're a massive fan of the series, it's probably best to steer clear.

Yeah I watched a playthrough and it looks rough. I like how many nods there are to it in terms of aesthetics but it clearly is more of a Super Metroid game than the original.
It's fantastic! I've really enjoyed the losing your suit and then getting it back and wreaking painful vengeance.

It was probably around equal to, if not better than, Super Metroid tbh. I'm hoping Dread is in the same tier.

Gato Roboto is a fun, short Metroidvania blast. Monster Boy bored me to tears, don't get the love for that one. Cave Story is kind of Metroidvania and well worth playing if you haven't. Iconoclasts is good but has an impenetrable story. Owlboy sucks. Meaning to try the Messenger and Sundered. Gato Roboto is a good shout. Knew about it but never got around to it
I didn't get Cave Story. It just wasn't... anything much. I didn't really care about it at any point in my playthrough. Maybe my expectations were too high
Never really been sold on Owlboy. The kind of game I might play one day when I've played all the other games
Carrion another good call!
Just finished Owlboy, and it gets a major "meh" from me. The story is depressing and abusive (up until the last moments its mainly about how much the main character sucks), the controls are a bit clunky and the game tends to ask for more precision than controls allow for, the level layout teases with "metroidvanianess" but gets the flow all wrong for that genre, and the graphics are lovely in screenshots and gifs, but feel a bit samey when playing.
Gato Roboto, on the other hand, is just wonderful. A small, cute, perfectly distilled metroidvania. Frequently on sale for next to nothing too (€3.99, normal price €7.99).

Yeah I was a few hours into Owlboy wondering when the training wheels would come off and there would start being some puzzles, combat etc that were interesting.
Then it ended. And the story was just miserable.

I've got about £5 funds on my eShop account I've been looking to spend so will probably go with Gato Roboto. What's the playtime like on it?

It's only 3-4 hours apparently. Annoyed at myself for not sticking with it when it was on GP... One of those extremely rare occasions where I wasn't in the mood for a metroidvania.

3-4 hours is a decent length. I got anxiety recently trying to decide between playing MH Rise, BotW or D2 Resurrected. They're all such massive time investments that I can't realistically commit to more than one. Ending up playing DK Tropical Freeze

Hah, yeah. I played Donut County the other day and I'm going to have a go at The Artful Escape next. It's pretty nice starting a game without the dread that you'll never find the time to finish it.

Finished Super Metroid last night. Remains my GOAT. Just timeless. Going to watch the story beats of Zero Mission and Fusion. Never played the latter.

Fusion is well worth a play. Being funneled along to the right area gets a bit annoying, but aside from that it's a solid entry.
I should probably give it a playthrough having said that, seeing as I finished Super recently too and Fusion comes between that and Dread.

Might just emulate it on my phone and chip away at it for the next week.

Yeah, GBA. Think the Wii U is the only legit way of playing it without a GBA, and I can't be arsed going up in the loft to find that, so emulation for me too!

GBA games look and run great on a hacked Vita, if anyone has one lying around.

3DS too via virtual console. It's how I've been playing Zero Mission. Pretty sure that's only if you have one of the ambassador ones, 3DS VC never officially came out otherwise. Unless you've got a hacked machine, of course.

3DS too via virtual console. It's how I've been playing Zero Mission. Only if you bought a 3DS near launch and got into the Ambassador program. They aren't available to buy on the 3DS eShop. Using the Wii U Gamepad as a massive GBA was pretty cool though. GBA games, and especially the Metroid ones, hold up quite well when scaled up.

Only Metroid Fusion was available with the ambassador program, though?

Lots of spoilers doing the rounds at the moment apparently... Not that Nintendo haven't already done a good job at that with their trailers.
Going to factory reset my switch today as it's had a few performance issues in other games. So long Pokémon save...

Is there a general consensus from reviews? I'm still not sold on it - forgot about it to be honest. Just going to wait and see how people find it here probably. I bet it's not as good as DK Tropical Freeze and I'm playing that anyway
