Blasphemous is highly rated, though I thought was just ok I didn't even finish it. Bloodstained is decent too.

The two Ori games are good. Not as hard as Hollow Knight, but they require patiencw early on due to having less health.
I enjoyed 100% completing both games!

Blesphemous! Forgot about that. I finished that and did a second run with one of those hard (?) mode things. I did the one that changed your health bar into orbs. In some ways that made it much easier, especially later on. Good game Ori: played the first one, think my thoughts are in the recently completed or abandoned thread. I didn't really like it Bloodstained: Yeah, that was great. Not as good as past games, mainly due to presentation, but very, very good I do like a Metroidvania

Gato Roboto is a fun, short Metroidvania blast. Monster Boy bored me to tears, don't get the love for that one. Cave Story is kind of Metroidvania and well worth playing if you haven't. Iconoclasts is good but has an impenetrable story. Owlboy sucks. Meaning to try the Messenger and Sundered.

Carrion is worth a look. Fantastic little game.
I'm really in the mood for another one now too after my Super Metroid run through. Might have to check out Gato now.

I didn't get Cave Story. It just wasn't... anything much. I didn't really care about it at any point in my playthrough. Maybe my expectations were too high
Never really been sold on Owlboy. The kind of game I might play one day when I've played all the other games
Carrion another good call!

I felt the same about Cave Story. It was OK, but magazines and people kept on going on about it as the second coming.
Gato Roboto really surprised me though, really enjoyed that.

I really enjoyed Carrion (played it on PC but imagine the Switch one will be identical). The 2 Ori games on Switch I enjoyed too (and 100%'d both of them). I have only dabbled in Blasphemous and Hollow Knight and they left a good initial impression. Monster Boy I have bought but not played yet.
As for Bloodstained, I am not sure how far they got with Switch performance fixes as it wasn't great early on (and I was unfortunate enough to go for a Switch backer copy (I wish I had chosen the PC version really as it's physical will be late but after all patches supposedly).
Not sure how Metroidvania some of the lesser known titles such as Giga Wreckers Alt.

There's still frame drops and long loading times between areas. It's also quite a bit uglier than other versions. I'd play it on anything else personally (haven't played the Switch version myself but looked at performance videos online)
HK and Blasphemous well worth returning to, especially HK (and there's a new one on the way, eventually, one day. Soon?)
Something about the Monster Boy games have always put me off. I'd rather play the proper one with the skateboard

Axiom Verge and sequel are two other obvious ones which are generally well rated (again, I own the first game but only dabbled) and the first game is very Metroid inspired.
Edit - the Megaman ZX games in the Zero/ZX collections were decent too.

I haven't played 2, but the first Axiom Verge is shit and I will die on that hill. The final third of it is one of the worst games I've ever played.

I don't remember anything particularly different about the last third of the game. I remember seeing the head thing with its body and it looking amazing
Then again, I don't remember any particularly difficult bosses either and I've heard people saying they're a nightmare. I've played it twice too. Think I need to play it again

Found it just incredibly medicore corridor crawling for everything up to Edin and then it just became a completely frustrating wankfest from then on with all these stupid flying enemies that can fly and shoot at any angle and do lots of damage while I can only shoot in 8 directions and the only weapons that can cover wide areas don't have enough range to actually reach the flying cunts. Master stroke was that the RNG meant the best weapon available for dealing with them wasn't even obtainable until literally the room before the final boss. Stupid game. Plus the boss in Edin itself is genuinely the worst ever boss fight. It's worse than bed of chaos.

What's the RNG weapon? I didn't use most of the weapons but I liked getting them and trying them out for 5 seconds (like most Dark Souls weapons)
I suppose annoying enemies don't really bother me. Most enemies in games are annoying, it would be so much easier if they weren't there
Again, my main memory of the final boss is radical head alien thing!

There's 3 IIRC. Basically, (I had to look this up) there are 3 super special guns and one is randomly assigned to be the one oyu get in your run. There's a bunch of places in the game it can appear. Mine spawned outside the final boss room.

Finally finished Super. 6:45 with 82%, so not breaking any records Tryiing to get to the 2 missile upgrades on the left side of the map on the first area was frustrating me, so I decided to copy my save and take out Mother Brain. Finished with 2 or 3 seconds on the clock (saved the chumps on the way out) - that's how you do escape sequences (Ori)! Think I said somewhere in a thread that Axiom Verge is better than Super Metroid. I take it back. Super Metroid is such a good game - one of the best

The two missile upgrades where you have to break through the wall up and to the left of your ship and then go through a hot lava obstacle course that can take most of your health if you're not careful?
Always hated that bit, and the game always seems to slow to a crawl when that lava rises. The reward just doesn't seem at all fair.

thanks for telling me how to get to them

I wouldn't blame anybody that abused the rewind function by the missiles at that point. I remember the pain back then the game first launched. Think I failed to pick up either missile pack on my first couple of attempts. Haha

Yeah, it's an absolute pain in the dick to go through it again just for a missile upgrade, never mind doing it more than twice... Think I managed to get both in one run once when I was younger and nimbler.

That area is scarred into my brain so I get quite stressed out trying to get both at once. I rarely pull it off though.

Duffking I enjoyed Iconoclasts to a point, but there's too much talking, and there's an awful lot of backtracking because it can't always be bothered to let you know where you should be heading next. I fired it off on the spectacularly shit hide & seek boss. Don't think I'll be bothering with Dread. I was surprised on going back just how clunky Super actually is - the controls are far from smooth. Finding out that it's headed by Mercurysteam, who are responsible for the worst Castlevania to ever exist (Mirror of Fate - and yes, it is even worse than Haunted Castle) has killed any interest I had in it.

Super is very heavy, all the 2D ones since then, including Samus Returns, have controlled far, far better. Much faster and lighter controls. I wouldn't rule out this game just because of Mirror of Fate. They also did Samus Returns which was genuinely very good.

Presumably (hopefully) Nintendo have been looking over their shoulder
Super controls are a bit fiddly (the wall jump is weird) but you never need to be particularly adroit anyway
