Dread left me feeling like it's not too late to take up piano.

Hehe. Hollow Knight goes a few steps further with its dash, double jumping and being able to deflect or bounce off projectiles. So many fun bosses, but you are kept on your toes constantly.

In HK do you ever get to a point where you don't die every 4 minutes and lose all your geo? Because I never got there

Actually, yeah. Honestly, by the time you hit the half way point, you've likely mastered the controls and the various skills and abilities. Your health will have increased enough that you can afford to be more reckless when travelling between areas and you'll have found enough charms that suit your play style.
And geo will become less of an issue, too.

Got Dread for Christmas. I'm unsure if I'm liking it as frankly I'm pretty crap at the combat, not very far in yet, and assuming things just get harder I don't think I'll have the patience to actually get better. I'm a lazy gamer.
Just to emphasize how shit I am, I'm basically wiping at the first boss. Dozen attempts so far, give or take, and I haven't got phase 2 yet. And reading about it there are several more phases. I can see what I need to do, but my reactions and accuracy are shit.
If I'd bought it myself I'd likely have already given up and walked away, but feel bad about asking for this and having people spend money on me.

Every single boss in this is a bit of a difficulty spike. Just remember that it's a test of memory - it'll play out largely the same way each and every time, so with persistence you'll learn where to stand and what to do by rote. The controls are a bit of a contortion at times, but the more you play the easier that'll get.
It's worth persevering with. Good luck!

At most the bosses will need more than 5 goes - with minimal reloading.

At most the bosses will need more than 5 goes, at least a dozen - with minimal reloading. I didn't count but the first boss (which I eventually got down) definitely took more than 5 goes... In general I don't really get any great sense of satisfaction once I kill a tricky boss in a game, mostly just get a sense of relief that it's over and that I don't have to do it again.

The best advice I can give is practice you counters on regular enemies (not the EMMI) and play cautiously with bosses. Try to learn their attack patterns and look out for counter opportunities. Trigerring one will launch a cinematic that allows you to spam attacks whilst they play out, dealing massive amounts if damage.
Also, many projectiles thrown by bosses can be destroyed, resulting in health and missile drops.
Again, caution is king to minimising the number of attempts you have on a boss. Odds are you take most of your damage when you are attacking. Keep your attacks brief and be ready to dodge. Don't risk your own health by spamming missiles. Its more important to keep moving and keep reading the bosses movements. Their attacks are very easy to read after a few attempts and if you can maintain your health, or replenish it regularly, you'll have them beat easy.

I'm fully aware of the *how* to do stuff, it's just actually doing it.
Will see how the next boss goes, but if they just get more complex I'll probably just reach a point where I don't go back.

I found the first and second boss were the most challenging in the game and it all got easier after that. They are not the toughest bosses in the game but I simply wasn't good enough yet. If you push through there's an amazing time to be had

I only really struggled and walked away from the game for a while with Escue and the last one. Every other boss was just a case of "I know what to do and I'll get further next time"
Took me a while to figure out Droygyga too come to think of it.
I really need to pick it up for another run through now that I've caught up on the first four (well, with ZM and AM2R instead of the originals)

Sorry. Didn't mean to patronise. I guess the game does feel harder at the start, but things so click and you become way more nimble than you expect. The first 2 bosses are tough, but once you're over that hurdle, you're pretty much sorted until the very end.

I'm getting through it slowly, just got to the second boss. Both bosses are so far my least favourite aspects of the game.
I don't really get the urge to repeatedly jump back in after failure in anything, if I can't complete a section of any game in a few attempts i just have to walk away. After an while my internal attempt counter resets, that might be an hour or so or it might be the next day.
It's why those Dark Souls games have eluded me.
Sorry to moan, it's definitely a fault with me rather than the game.
Tbh I can't make repeated attempts as I feel myself getting close to just smashing the switch against the wall. I have issues.

Moan away. Its a fair and valid opinion. I guess because I love it, I want everyone to persist, but thats mental.
I ranted on the old EG forum about Dark Souls only a few years back. I beat it in the end, but still have a lot I disliked. I certainly regretted completing Demon's Souls afterwards. Haha.

I think I'd be more open to the bosses if they had a health bar.
I can't tell how close they are to phase changing or keeling over so I don't have any real sense of doing better.

Yeah, there were a few bosses where I felt exactly the same. Wasn't sure if I was even doing any damage at all, in fact, and feared I'd missed a trick or a technique or something in the environment. If not a literal health bar, some visual effect to denote them taking a pasting doesn't seem too much to ask.
Looking back, in general, I was *always* doing damage when I thought I was. I just didn't trust the game enough at that point.

The bosses in Super Metroid changed colour as their health deteriorated. You could almost tell when they were done for. A missed trick for a lot of games really.

Just reading through the comments here these past few days has got me in the mood to start a hard mode run again. It is so damn fun.
I did the first boss first time, but that perhaps made me a smidge too confident as the second boss took a good few attempts to overcome. It can literally kill you in an instant. You can only take a couple of hits and they cam both be dealt in a fraction of a second on the second phase. Still, I did it and it felt good.
Just moving and shooting in this game is so satisfying. It's gonna be so easy to replay this game over and over.

Not that anyone cares, but I beat the game again on Hard Mode this evening. 100% item rate again and I did the final boss first time! I guess all that practice first time around paid off!
So much fun to play through a second time. I didn't shave much time off my first effort (final time: 7:22) and I'm still no clearer as how to sequence break the game at any point. I did however let the game direct me through its 'intended' route, coming back for the extra collectibles only at the very end.
Good stuff. Music aside, this is an excellent game. Possibly my 2nd fave switch game after Breath of the Wild. Sooooo good.

I'm quite a way through this, and some of the boys fights are genuinely great pumping. Absolutely great boss just completed to heat up the planet again. Needed all the skills I picked up, and great when you start to be able to dodge most attacks. Doesn't feel quite as difficult as Samus Returns by the same developers, at least in terms of the exploration. I've only been lost the once, I'd say.

I still haven't played Returns, but I did beat the Gameboy original on the 3DS a few years back. That was mostly just branching corridors with dead ends, with the only real route being the path downward. I guess they fixed that somewhat in the remake?
Still love the Gameboy version. The black and white emulation on the 3DS gives it a vintage horror vibe. I'd love a black and white filter for Metroid Dread.

I actually don't know how much Samus Returns resembles the original. In Sammie Returns there were a few times I recall examine the map searching for an area I might have missed out might have opened up with new equipment. It's a lot like the SNES and GBA Metroids in that respect.

I don't think I need any of those modes. Still love the game and have clocked 40 hours over 5 playthroughs. Maybe I'll try the one hit mode. Sounds brutal though!

Yeah, I probably would've stuck it on easy if it was available at launch. Next playthrough with be normal again as in hindsight it was the perfect challenge. OHK mode just sounds plain awful to me!

Did OK, but pretty much given up on the last boss. All the others I felt like I was progressing with each go and genuinely got better. The end boss though requires so many perfect timings that simply not getting anywhere.

It's tough, but I wouldn't say its unreasonable. Once you know the subtle hints he gives before each of his attacks, and there is some pretty generous windows to react within, you can pretty much beat him flawlessly.
It does feel more like a Mega Man boss though, rather than a proper Metroid one.

Almost gave up forever after three tries after about 10 I could beat phase 1 and two in full heath. After a few more I beat it at max health. It was so satisfying. I might play this again
