I don't recall any previous Metroid game ever even telling you how to shinespark. I definitely didn't realise you could do it when I was a kid and beat the games.

Super Metroid had a room dedicated to it with the weird animal showing you what to do.

Ah yeah, I still have no idea how to do that and I've played them all.

It might be zero mission, but there's a painfully long puzzle that sort of 'pushes' you into shinesparking in such a way you realise you can bank that charge again. It's very subtle, but once you spot it you know.
It could be my prior, hazy knowledge, of those games obscuring things in this game, but I haven't spotted such a hint in this one. There's definitely one for shinesparking as a ball, which requires some additional observation, but perhaps I'm overlooking some of the others.

I played Zero Mission recently and got to Mecha Ridley, and I didn't see anything about shinesparking.

Shinespark is probably the most convoluted mechanic I've ever seen. And you don't so much extend it as you can trigger it again if you can keep running after gettting it the first time

I played Zero Mission recently and got to Mecha Ridley, and I didn't see anything about shinesparking. Oh yeah. They're entirely optional secrets. You'd only find the secret if you were interested in going for 100% completion and then from there you'd figure you need the speed booster to obtain it. And then from there its a case of working backwards and finding a spot to speed boost from and so on... I think a video of the one I'm thinking of was posted in either here or the Switch thread, but its easily missed. Point is though, its definitely something you can figure out on your own and it teaches you a little something extra trying to pull it off. I'm not seeing anything that clever in Dread, but I may be blind.

Having said this, I'm definitely nit-picking. I love this game. Its been so fun playing through. Its not my favourite in the series, but definitely top 3 material.

And I've finished it! What a game! Way better than I hoped for. As far as the series goes, this is near the top for sure. Maybe not as amazing as Super Metroid or Metroid Prime, but on par with Zero Mission and ahead of everything else, for sure.
I've played through a lot of Metroidvania games too, since Covid, and it ranks nicely alongside Hollow Knight, Ori and Fez as well. They each have their strengths, but they all stand out greatly from an over-crowded genre.
I do hope this is the beginning of something bigger, but it could also be another huge wait before we see another side-scrolling Metroid game again, so I'll be rinsing this one over and over again in the years to come.
Excellent stuff.

Haha. I didn't want to spam the thread, but I jumped straight into a hard mode playthrough after making that post. Even though its the longest game in the series, it still left me wanting more, too.

I'm on the last boss fight and he's doing my head in. Doesn't help I'm fighting with the controls as much as him.

I'm on the last boss fight and he's doing my head in. Doesn't help I'm fighting with the controls as much as him. Couple of things that might help: - Spend time learning the phases, rather than trying to beat the boss (obvious, but it helped me) - Go back and get some more upgrades (I did a bunch of these, and it made the final boss far less teeth-gnash) - Don't worry too much about landing missile hits, I found the blaster did enough damage in most phases - There are phases when you can destroy stuff the boss is hurling out that let you pretty much replenish your life completely - Git gud, obvs When I eventually beat him, it was the first time I reached the final phase. I finished the fight with full health.

In the first phase, concentrate on destroying the blob for HP and getting the parry. You can finish him off with about 3 of those- keep hammering him with ice missiles throughout the cutscene Second phase is just jumping around him in the same direction as he's firing - stay close Third phase is pretty much the same as the first, use a super bomb to destroy the big fire blob, it's just free health Spoilers in case you want to work it out on your own As Phattso said, I think the normal shot does the same or close enough damage that you can just stick with it for the whole fight

Just reached the last boss. Will take a break and try tomorrow.
Have to say I am amazed at the learning curve in this game. Every boss starts off insanely difficult and you think is impossible. Then after 3 deaths you start to see patterns. Then on the 10th try you kill them without even taking one hit. They are perfectly pitched.

Now in the final (?) area so I don't think I'm too far from the end - unless I decide to go back and find more items...?

A new sequence break had been found for the Kraid fight, in addition to the morph ball one. Pretty damn cool!

If it had had even average music (by series standards) it probably would have been my fave but instead it’s (the music) Other M level. Overall great game though.

I'm on the last boss fight and he's doing my head in. Doesn't help I'm fighting with the controls as much as him. Same as Phatso said. Initially I found the last boss almost impossible 20 tries later I could beat most phases without taking a hit. Finished up with full health. The whole battle feels so satisfying once it clicks and you dance around each attack in a weird trance like state.

That purple EMMI fight it a b*tch! After procrastinating over this for almost a week, I beat him on my 2nd attempt yesterday! And, yeah, the red EMMI was a bit easier. Looks like I'm on the final stretch now 👍

Completely stuck on where to go. Looking at the map of ? just leads me to a dead end. Last thing I got was the morph bomb. Just spending ages figuring out where to go… not having much fun.

The route forward is generally very near to where you got the item from or if there is a warp point very near then it might mean going there.

I went all the way to the bottom. Then I try and go back to where I was before and the teleports are blocked… getting to a point where I might give up.
