Well fuck. Dropped my phone outside Asda this morning and only just noticed that the top corner is shattered with crack going across the top.
It just looks like light from my monitor reflecting on the rounded corner of the screen. Pretty realistic RT actually.
Good job I dragged my heels getting that battery

At least that's the story you're telling Mrs Crash.

Went from 4a to 7a recently and if anything it feels worse. It's bigger, which makes it much harder to use single handed. But worst of all is the fingerprint scanner behind the screen. Absolutely atrocious. Whereas the 4a one on the back was lighting fast and had a nice tactile response.
The rest of the phone feels basically identical. 0.5x zoom camera is great and battery life is better, but really phones have become absolutely pointless to upgrade.

Felt the same going from pixel 5 to 8
Clunkier and basically no improvements

Ha, that's helpful. Also still rumbling along with my 5, only issue is the battery. Was considering an upgrade but might leave it now.

Yeah, we've definitely reached the point of phones being powerful enough to not get left in the dust and start to struggle after a couple of major updates. You can easily hang on to one for years now without missing out on a quantum leap in performance.
Degrading battery and camera improvements are all that'll drive me to finally upgrade.

I've dropped my S22 about a hundred times, still looks brand new. So now, for the first time ever, I'll be keeping it and upgrading to SIM only plan in April.
Jinxed it now haven't I?

I only upgraded because I dropped my 4a and screen cracked Should've just paid a man in a dodgy shop to replace the screen.

I was planning on making that same change this year. Maybe I should stick with my low bills for longer then. That's a shame. But then, I'd quite like a new phone. Ho-hum, quandaries...

I've been looking at phones here and there but have come to the same conclusion.
The Honor 90 is probably the closest I've felt to upgrading my Realme 6 Pro, which is 4 years old now. But even then I'm thinking I'll wait to see how the next model is.
The Samsung A55 has just come out, I'll see how that's looking. I think I'm nearly at a point where I will upgrade, but I could equally hold off for another year. It's just the camera at this point that's bothering me.

Spent a couple of hours looking last night and there wasn't one where I thought yeah that's the one.
I don't want to leave gifgaf so that leaves buying simfree. They're all stupidly expensive as well, for not a lot more functionality that what I have now. Literally not arsed.

at the moment I'm trying to figure out if my A70's battery is dying or if it's a dodgy Samsung update - looks like there may be a bug in the most recent A series updates

Sounds like you have the itch I had. Cracking my 4a screen tipped me over the edge. I was quite excited to get it, especially the newer camera sensor, but it's been underwhelming. Pixel 2 camera was a massive leap in quality from whatever iPhone I had prior to that. 2>4a was also a good jump. 4a>7a... Meh

Anybody else use swipe gestures for their phone?
I've decided to try using them instead of the usual on-screen button nav bar. It felt very alien at first because I was way too exaggerated with my swipe gestures but after a day or so I'm now really happy with it.

Yeah assuming they are the same as those on pixel, they are fully ingrained now and I'd really struggle to go back to button navigation

Swipe in from lower left/right for back, up and release for home or up and left/right for recents?
This new phone as some new hold bottom edge so I can circle to search on any screen. It's actually very cool

Typical, I order a new (refurbished) phone and then suddenly my 4 year old phone starts behaving better. Maybe it's because I've not had to use it much this weekend.

Recently upgraded from Poco M4 Pro 5G to a Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G. Much lighter and so far more responsive and I've used the ADB AppControl for pc to remove some of the pre installed apps that can't be removed on the phone.
The wife has also gone for the same phone not that I think she really needed to as her old one is a Poco F3. Maybe I should have taken that.

I've got a Poco X5 Pro that I needed in a hurry because I smashed up my Pixel 7 Pro.
It's not great, but it was really cheap and it's been ok. It is a bit crashy and it has a potato for a camera but the battery is decent.
Plus, Google have offered me 300 quid to trade it in for a 9 Pro, which is nice and actually a decent bit more than I paid for it.

It is nice to have a Pixel again, instead of a potato.

I went for the 8, after my 5 died on it's arse and the battery expanded (thankfully didn't explode). I am not wholly convinced tbh. It's fine but not a significant step up.

I went from 6 pro to 8 pro and that felt like a minor upgrade despite skipping generations. You get some nice stuff like face unlock, but apart from that I probably could've stuck with the old one for a couple more years. It definitely misses that new shiny feeling you got back when phones had true generational leaps.

I've got a 9 Pro and so far it is very nice.
Bit iphone in form factor, mind you.

Yeah, not remotely. As it goes, I like the square iPhones (I have a 13 for work), tbh. So I'm not upset about that. By the time it's got a case on it, it won't matter anyway.
It feels like a flagship phone. After the Poco, it's incredible how much quicker and smoother it is. And I didn't even think the Poco was that bad, beyond awful camera software, everything else was alright. But this is night and day.

I skipped a couple of generations of Pixel with a POCO as well, great phones once you got rid of all the preinstalled crap, I think I installed the google camera app on it, worked fine. I also stick a decent case on any phone day one, so all phones look alike to me On a pixel 7 at the moment, it will be a couple of years before I upgrade to a 9 I think, either that or we will have pixel implants in our brains

Hence the Poco. Like I said, I don't hate it, I've managed just fine with it for a year and I found the interface to be entirely problem free after removing everything - which it let me do with no issue. Ongoing 9 Pro thoughts. It's heavy and the metal edge gets warm when it's under load. Smaller screen is nice, resolution is great.

I am trying to figure out a decent midrange phone for my wife to replace her Poco X4 Pro, she wants the 6.7" screen, and fast charging with a decent amount of storage while avoiding the curved screen nonsense (I regret every curved screen I get for screen protectors). Had looked at Redmi Note 13 Pros but seems curved screen have snuck i to the lower end now.
