Luckily we copied all her photos to a sd card just before she went away so hopefully those should be ok. We've managed to boot up her old phone, which should have most of her contacts on it if they aren't on the sim. I think the thing she's most worried about are passwords she stored on it either as notes or in the browser. I don't have much hope of getting those back though.
We're thinking of a Pixel 6a as a replacement. Does going pure Google make things simpler?

Yep, much easier. No bloatware but of course you have to hand your life over to Google.

Yeah, if you hand over the keys to google, it makes life very easy. Mainly because, ironically, it’s platform agnostic. I can sign into my Google account on anything and have access to my contacts, calendar, photos, passwords and so on immediately.
It makes switching between iPhone and android very easy.

Anyone had any experience with the ID Mobile network? I can upgrade to a Pixel 7 Pro for next to nothing extra a month but honestly don't know much about them at all compared to EE.

My Mrs used to use them. They're ok, owned by Currys and uses Three as a network. Were cheap and cheerful, but when it came to her needing a new phone, they couldn't really offer anything, so she moved.
No real complaints, though. Signal and network were fine, no billing issues, cheap contract.

Nice to have unlimited data too as I felt 25gb a month was just starting to be on the edge of the slightly too little, especially as I'm now driving and streaming a bit of music on comites. Been ages since I've had a brand new phone, not that I'm expecting a huge jump from the 5 bit it'll be nice I'm sure.

Because it was on offer, I decided to get the Pixel charging stand. So I'm a full Google wanker now.

Battery is better, cameras are better, screen is better, build quality is better and the processing is notably quicker.

Had my pixel 7 for a bit now. It's basically all still smooth, I prefer the slightly smaller size, and the face ID is a major life improvement. The camera is even faster in low light, just amazeballs. But... The camera app is a bit prone to hanging or not showing a picture.

I'm usually against using cases because I'm stupid but I think in this case I'll make an exception. Also quite tempted to get a cover for the camera bar as it looks like it might scratch easy and it's a bit too shiny for me.

I've got a Spigen case for my 6P and that juts out a little bit over the camera bar, so won't scratch when you put it on a table. No scratches on mine so far after a year anyway.

Yeah, I've got a Spigen case on mine, the clear one. Proven to work, in my experience. And necessary because the 7 is a slippery bugger.

Official 7 case on mine, its quite nice, not super grippy but I've not dropped it yet. Only annoyance I've had with mine is I didn't get on with the out of the box auto screen dimming, it just went too dark in low light, couldn't see a thing. Fixed with a custom auto brightness app so no worries though.

My wife decided the Pixel isn't cute enough so went with another Samsung instead. Wimmin eh?

Admittedly, after ten years of Samsung phones, I got quite used to their UI, it would be hard to change now. That, and I guess it's easier to have a Samsung phone when you also have a Samsung smartwatch.
Might be almost time for me to upgrade my old A50 though. I've had it for three years, and it's getting kinda sluggish lately.
I have the chance of getting an old Realme X2 Pro as a sort of hand-me-down. It would be quite a lot faster, but we're still talking about another three years old phone. Not sure it's worth switching and having to reinstall all the personal apps, if I might have to upgrade soon anyway. The battery is not what it used to be either, what with 40W fast charging making it uber hot. Not sure how long it would last now.

So I had a chance to try this phone... not a bad one in terms of performance, much better than my A50 (which used to be better, but became a laggy mess since the Android 11 upgrade). Unfortunately, I can see the display wasn't treated very well: burn-in is all over the screen, and far too noticeable. Guess I'll give it up, and eventually upgrade to a better phone when I find something good. All I play on my phone is pretty much just Subway Surfers and a few 2D games anyway. But the lag is getting annoying. It wasn't like this. Darn Samsung.

I'm considering getting rid of my smartphone but going back to a feature (dumb) phone.
Only consideration is that I do occasionally fall back on my phone as a mobile hotspot when my patchy internet breaks. I've found 4G feature phones with hotspot but none with 5G, is anyone aware of any, or do they just not exist yet?

It seems like there are a few Pixel 7 owners here, how do you all feel about the phone?
I ordered one from Amazon as it was on sale there, as a replacement for my waterlogged S10 - which then promptly started working after being dead for about three days. So now debating whether to keep the Pixel 7, especially after reading further reviews/impressions about it being a bit buggy and unimpressive compared to Samsung phones - I've been using Samsung for a decade now and quite used to their UI and OS, and my S10 has been pretty great since launch, but just not sure if the S23 is worth £300 over the Pixel 7.

Can't say I've ever noticed my 6P being at all sluggish. It was (and still is) perfectly snappy coming from a S10+ before it. I also have a S21FE, which is probably a better comparison and there's no perceptible difference there imo.
Sounds like fanboi nonsense to me.
I do the usual dev mode fix for animation speeds for any new phone fwiw, which might be what they're on about
There do seem to be loads of deals on with the S23 at the moment though if you're buying upfront.

Got a ton of terrific use out of my POCO X3, but my EE contract ends on the 29th March so now seems like a good time for a new phone and contract Ended up going with ID Mobile for a Pixel 7, £29 upfront, 10GB data (don't use much) for only £23.99 a month Called EE to see if they could match/better and the bloke more or less said eh, no, sorry, WTF

I've got a 7 pro (I bought it SIM free, but it's on EE) and it's great. It definitely does not have bugs or slowdowns.
There's a couple of things that could be better (the face unlock is rubbish compared to Apple's, but it's not using a special camera, so it seems to struggle with hats, hairstyles and glasses/sunglasses, so I've disabled it; the inscreen fingerprint reader isn't as good as the rear mounted one), but they're pretty minor.
I genuinely think it's my favourite phone and I've had Googles since the Nexus 5x.
My last work handset was a S10+ and it was ok, but literally loaded with pointless, unremovable Samsung bloatware that would slow it down at random times and I don't miss it in the slightest. The Pixel pisses on it from a great height.

I have been having a little look at potential replacements for my Oppo Find X2 Pro in a few months when the contract ends. May have to move from EE now that you cannot get contracts from third party vendors with them any more, and they are horrifically overpriced in their own deals.
I usually try to go for a heavily discounted 'previous year, flagship (bought the X2 Pro after X3 Pro was released) so I can feel some improvement without spending too much. I want at least the same camera options I currently have (inc an UW and tele) so considering the Pixel 7 Pro, and the Xiaomi 13 Pro (although that being this years flagship may be way out of the budget I am willing to spend on a phone contract). I quite like the overkill 12/512GB on this phone too, even if I haven't filled the storage yet.
Still have time to consider. I could just buy a phone outright (or stick with this one for now as it is doing the job still) but data contracts are trying to tie you to 24 months now which is pretty restrictive.

What's wrong with the Oppo? I also have that phone, since Feb 2021, it sill absolutely fly's no matter what you throw at it and as you say an absurd amount of storage, I would say the battery life has tailed off a little over the years but not so much that it's an issue and gotta love the fast charging.

To be honest, keeping the phone is also a very valid option because, as you say, it still does all I need and the battery is still fairly decent. Have to decide the best sim only route after that as providers will try to force 24 months contracts on SIM only these days (12 was more doable). Last time I did a contract sim only was when I had to import an LG V20 as the last flagship level phone with a changeable battery, and that was a 12 monther. And I do use real cameras on actual photo trips so the phone photography is only a backup option really.

I have just got the Pixel 7 pro, they seemed to be going pretty cheap brand new & sealed on ebay so saving a few quid vs a new contract.
Definitely not laggy and the camera is great.
I am pretty shocked you can't get rid of the google search widget on the home screen however.

It's been like that for a while. I think you can disable Google Now but you'll lose the other stuff it does, too.
I don't even notice it any more.

One_Vurfed_Gwrx I don't know what coverage is like for you but Giffgaff do rolling 1 month contracts. I've been with ever since my voda contract ended 3 years ago and I don't see any reason to leave. £10 per month and I'm up to about 15gb a month allowance since the just keep giving me more data. Actually now that I think about it, I should drop the goodybag down to a lower bundle. I think I used about 500mb over the last 12 months.
