I am pretty shocked you can't get rid of the google search widget on the home screen however. You can just use another launcher if you want rid of it?

I have had my Pixel 3a since launch (2019) and love it. Camera is superb and apps run fine, but battery is getting rubbish as excepted I suppose for the age. It no longer receives updates and security updates. So looking to get a upgrade potentially, and saw the Pixel 6a is on sale currently at £299 (which is £100 off), I wouldn't get much trading in my 3a with them or anyone else when searching other sites maybe around £30. But do see that Currys, on top of the £100 off they also give £50 store gift card. Anyone have a 6a or went from the 3a upwards? Not looking to spend crazy money or want a huge phone and seems like this 6a is decent.

I also had a 3a, upgraded to a 5 two years ago and it was a massive upgrade even then. Imagine the 6a would.be an even bigger jump

Looks like more photos of the Pixel 7a have leaked, ahead of the Google IO event on the 10th of May:

I got my partner a Pixel 6 for Christmas for 300. She was upgrading from a One Plus 3 (!) so obviously lightyears ahead of that. I've had a Pixel 2 and currently on a 4a.
Tbh, phone upgrades feel so marginal these days, unless you haven't changed phone for about 5 years or more. My 2>4a jump was nice but not a huge step up. My partner's 6 does have a lovely camera though. That is a noticeable improvement, and partly why I got her a 6 instead of a 6a because they have different cameras.
My main beef with Pixels is the battery life tanking after like a year. They don't have great longevity. Otherwise, they are perfect phones for me, so 3>6a is a no brainer.

Aye, I'll probably wait until the Pixel 9 pro before I upgrade from the P6P, as battery life aside, there's really no point. Back in the days when the Galaxy S2 and 3 for example were true generational leaps over their predecessor I could see the point in yearly upgrades, but now it's just a slight speed bump that you'd struggle to notice outside of benchmarks.
I'm glad I've gotten out of that "must have the new shiny" mindset.

I think everyone has. I know one person who gets the annual product update (Samsung Galaxy fan, for some reason) and everyone else has pretty much settled into a ‘when it’s laggy/battery dead/broken’ cycle.

I've been going with annual pixel upgrades.
The face recognition unlock was a major qol upgrade...
My 5's screen broke and during the pandemic it was quite difficult to get it fixed, so I sold it for a decent price and got the 6. I then didn't really rate the pixel 6 size - it was bigger than the 5, and then the 7 was a bit smaller again and had the face unlock.
The faster 7 does have a much faster camera - the AI stuff is really incredible.
I'll see what the 8 does, and will probably upgrade. You get £200+ or so for last year's second hand, and the handsets are well priced.

I'll move to a sim only contract for 12 months and see how the 5 is doing after that. Battery still seems solid and I don't really play games on it so speed is fine too.

Is anybody else getting lots of 'this content can't be played on this app' errors with YoutubeVanced?
I think this might be the end...

Have you tried revanced? Bit of a faff to get it working, but no issues here.
/edit Although that seems to have gone a bit wonky now. Stops playing in the middle of a video with a spinning circle. Probably overdue an update...

I've resolved the issue but it's a sucky fix. Uninstalled MicroG and reinstalled but no longer signed into Google account.
All videos working again.
Might have a look at revanced but others are reporting same issue there as well. Might be an account flag o_0

I went to revanced a couple of months ago, apart from the occasional picture ad on the sub feed it's been as good as vanced ever was.

15 mins of head scratching before working out how this worked.
Downloaded the manager app and the older YouTube version. Installed and then patched it.
Seems to work just fine after signing into MicroG. When I went back to the earlier Vanced, which was now signed back into google services via MicroG, it wasn't working again.
Uninstalled.

I'm suddenly getting these annoying emojis when I close my case(it has square cut out to show the time).
Sometimes it's a carrot, a tomato and one that looks like a melted poo among others.
Don't know why it's suddenly started. But anyone else have them? Know how to disable them?

Hi all Any recommendations on a android phone around £300, needs to be sim free, have headphone jack and be a "good" music player, as this is all I really use my phone for, I'm upgrading from a at least 5 year old Sony xperia xa, that has all but given up the ghost now ? as you will probably tell I really could not give a shite about staying up to date with mobile phones

Depends on how attached you are to the idea of keeping the headphone jack really. There are loads of options out there without one, but if it's a deal breaker your options are extremely limited (old stock of Pixel 5a, or something like a Galaxy A52 for example)

Check out the Realme 9 Pro.
I've got the 6 Pro and I'm probably going to hold on to it for another year. Haven't felt like I need an upgrade yet, even though I play quite a few games and use it pretty heavily.

Have a look at some of the Oppo, Xiaomi and Realme phones, quite a few in that bracket that might fit the bill.
Something like the Realme 8/9 or the Poco X5 for example, all available with headphones jacks well within that price range on the likes of Amazon etc.

Comes with a 1 month plan, but you can just cancel straight away. www.hotukdeals.com/deals/google-pixel-7-128gb-5g-smartphone-all-colours-ps387-ps396-with-1-month-plan-at-o2-refresh-4130248

I gave up on the YouTube apps and just buy YT Premium family using a Turkish VPN. It's like $4.50AU a month, cheaper if you buy it in bigger blocks etc

Yeah I went for premium even if just to stop ads appearing when my kids are doing yoga or Joe wicks fitness stuff on TV YouTube app.
Might check out this turkey approach tho!

Aye, even with revanced it can be a bit of a faff with embedded links and the like, so I'll probably subscribe again. Still worth having installed for sponsorblock, though. Haven't had any more issues with it recently.

YouTube is the single most used app anywhere by the other denizens of our house so we have a sub and I've been using YouTube music instead of Tidal/Spotify, so it basically works out the same cost anyway. Super worth it, tbh.

I've been considering a YouTube Premium sub, but I've got so many curated playlists in Spotify - some collaborative with friends - I feel too invested.
I'm also not sure how well YouTube music works with Sonos.
That said, I watch an absolute ton of YouTube, and there's actually a lot of obscure music on YouTube that isn't on Spotify, and I find myself listening to music on YouTube a lot despite my Spotify Premium sub.
I guess I'll just do a YouTube Premium trial to see what's what.

I'm also not sure how well YouTube music works with Sonos. It's not perfect, but it works ok from the Sonos app.
There's no integration from the YouTube app itself, though.

That's a bit disappointing, but not surprising.
I don't tend to use the Sonos app for anything but tinkering with the settings, but as long as you can create playlists and queue things up easily it shouldn't be a problem.
Do you use a voice assistant on Sonos, and if so, do commands work okay with YouTube Music? I use Google assistant which should have excellent YouTube integration, on paper.
