Yeah I went for premium even if just to stop ads appearing when my kids are doing yoga or Joe wicks fitness stuff on TV YouTube app. Might check out this turkey approach tho! I just followed the advice from this thread (I'm aussie but I assume it'd be the same process for you lads). It's a bit of a faff but worth it www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731994

Time to upgrade my phone. I tend to keep my contracts around the £20 per month mark as I don't game on phones or use exessive data. But why on earth can I get a Galaxy S22 for £24 per month at the minute? Is there something wrong with it?
I'm literally going to be upgrading from a Galaxy A51, which started at £18pm, but ended at £21pm. I'm highly suspicious.

I assume some form of sale as they even have the S23 Ultra in deals at the moment with unlimited data for around 35 a month...
Not personally had a Samsung since my S5 though. (Wife had an A70)

Perhaps no one's buying them?

I hope its that as I've just pulled the trigger on that deal. It just seems so ridiculous. 1 quid more and I can get 50GB data per month. I'm currently on 5GB.

Just gone SIM only. £15 a month for 25GB. I'm sure I could get it cheaper by switching but I wanted to stay with EE as they're the best in my area.

Nothing especially wrong with them as far as I know. They do have a slightly smaller battery than the S21 and S23, but still plenty big enough. I'd be tempted if I was in the market.
Probably worth bearing in mind that you'll get a couple of increases if it's a 24 month contract (although I suppose the second one would be pretty close to end of contract)

Nothing phone for £200 on O2 refresh at the moment if you don't mind having a credit check done and cancel the plan as soon as phone arrives.
I'm pretty damn tempted to get one as a spare even though I have a spare phone already...
Details on HUKD for anybody that fancies it.

Quick question. I have never used an esim before, but have a Galaxy S23 Ultra which I believe supports them. Needing one for a day in Turkey in the near future. How easy is it to disable my UK sim and just use the esim for the duration to avoid any risk of unwanted charges? Or am I stuck removing the original sim and trying to avoid losing it?

Should be as easy as you say. My Pixel has a "use sim" option which would just completely disable it. With esims it's always easiest if you have a second device available to open your emails/order page so you can scan the QR code, and make sure you do it somewhere with an internet connection.

Thanks, I will take a look at it. I wonder if the esim can be activated but not used before entering the country while I still have signal and service. It would seem silly for it not to. In the past I always grabbed physical sims but for the 24 hours I need it for, seems a bit wasted.

Pixel 8 Pro pricing is getting a bit fucking nuts. Starts at £999, which I wouldn't be considering if they weren't throwing in the watch too.
Could've sworn the page initially said get £200 off the watch, but it's showing as free now.

Bollocks. My previously fine pixel 4a has decided to develop screen burn of icons just as i was planning to upgrade my phone & sell this one on.
That's annoying. 😕

"Nothing Phone" might be the stupidest product name since Spotted Dick, but goddamn it I might actually be tempted away from Samsung.

I've seen them out in the wild and they just look a bit goofy. I was tempted by them initially, as they're trying to fill that gap that oneplus used to be at, but the LEDs are just too weird and gimmicky for me.

I've been tempted to get one of the first gen ones as a spare phone a few times when they're under £300. Not sure I'd pay £600ish for a second gen one though. You could probably find a P7P for that kind of money.

I'm not sure why you would go for that Nothing phone over a Pixel 8.

Firefox for Android has been updated to add support for 400+ browser addons, including uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger
I just switched from Chrome and the mobile web is actually usable again
It also lets you open links in a private browsing tab by default, which is something I've wanted for ages for all those random news stories that I click on and never visit the site again

Grabbed a Pixel 8 because the USB c port on my old pixel 5 was no longer working and the battery life was waning.
Nice enough device but other than those 2 things it feels like zero progress/change in the last three years, the phone is bigger and heavier for no noticeable difference in screen size and it doesn't feel any snappier or better to use. Definitely feeling justified in hanging onto the old one as long as I did, technological improvement in phones has slowed to a crawl.

Yep, it seems to me there comes a point when you have to change phones because manufacturers force you to by either reducing the security updates (& App support (performance)) and/or with the battery performance tailing off. It's just extra galling when you already have a 'premium' phone and then next one is not noticeably better just that the battery lasts a little bit longer or whatever.

Yeah, camera improvements and battery issues are about the only thing that will tempt me to upgrade now. You can go multiple generations without a noticeable improvement in speed.

Just got a new Pixel 8 pro today. Amazon had a deal the other day for the phone plus a pair of Pixel Bud Pros for £800 (I'll be selling the Buds, so effectively it is going to be around £700).
Seems a nice phone, although not sure if it will actually be much of an improvement on my previous OnePlus 8 Pro. That was going to be 4 years old in a few months time, so seemed the right time. Honestly though, other than a slightly erratic battery life, that phone was still holding up pretty well. Likely could have kept going with it for a while more, but I didn't want to be in a position where I had to replace it.
Now I have to get everything all set up how I like it, if I can avoid playing around too much with the AI wallpaper generator.

The battery on aging s9+ has taken a nosedive recently so I've been looking at new phones and saw that exact same deal Vandelay. Ultimately I don't care enough about any new phone really so begrudge forking out a wodge of cash on one. I'm seriously considering buying the battery kit off iFixit for £40. YouTube makes it look easy.

When I looked at replacing my battery on my phone a few years ago, I spoke to several repair guys, two out of five said they would only do it if they could source a genuine replacement as anything other than a genuine battery would be rubbish (turned out a genuine one was not available so they both refused to do it) but I thought screw it and gave the job to one of the others who went on to fit a generic replacement, the battery was just as crap as before.

Yeah I wouldnt trust eBay for a new battery and the ones on Amazon all have reviews basically stating they are recycled phones.
iFixit seems legit as they're the ones that do all the tearsdows people report on. Their product page claims it's a genuine replacement part.

I don't have the patience to take anything apart that needs a heat gun. Plus it just seems risky as fuck. I bloody loved my S10+ though, so would've probably made an exception for that if it hadn't died completely.
My plan is to just carry on with my P6P until the battery goes completely. Still going strong after almost 2 and a half years, which is a new record for me. Feels weird not switching up phones every year, but there's just no point in it any more now that generational leaps aren't a thing.

The battery on my Pixel 5 is pretty fucked. But I am virtually always near a power source and if out and about for any length of time, I take a power pack. Otherwise it's still absolutely fine. Can't get my head around paying £40 a month or whatever again.
