quitskingJust to say thanks again for the heads up on this course. Just finished week 1 and all I can say is I'm loving it. It's incredibly interesting and I've been boring my wife to death for the past few days relaying facts to her from it.

That's really good news. I've done a few Monash courses myself and really enjoyed them. I also found future learn to be good quality on the whole.
Glad you're enjoying it. It shows you can still learn and that you enjoy the subject. It also shows your wife just how long suffering she's going to have to be 🙂
Well done.

Got a smartwatch
Realised I need to get outside for a run or at least a walk every day because I'm only doing about 2,000 steps most weekdays.
On the bright side despite this, I seem to have a resting heart rate of 55 and a "fitness age" 4 years less than my actual age.
Come on gadget, give me some magic motivation!

That's a pretty damn impressive resting heart rate if you're not doing any kind of training. Dust off your hands, job done.
I went from high 80s to low 70s after changing job and moving away from a busy main road. Still lots of room for improvement though.

The heart rate monitor is the first thing I switch off, it creeps me out.

I spent 15 minutes last night watching a series of lights move across a screen based on an experiment done on the cortical cells of a cat in the 60s. Erm. What freaked me out was that I was actually understanding what was happening. Turns out my brain isn't as rusty as I thought. Early days so far but it's only reinforcing my belief that I should be doing this.

Apparently my blood oxygen level is shite though, just read it at 91% which may or may not mean I'm about to die.

quitsking Passed my first two week course last night. This whole thing is made of 6 two week courses so that's the first one done. This is the first time I've actually sat down and wilfully read and studied something in a loooong time. I managed to 100% the test without referring to my notes and I know it's only a silly little certificate that doesn't mean anything but... I was a little chuffed with myself.

Well done mate. You should be proud of yourself. You've taken the time and money to learn something new and then proceed that you learnt it. More to the point, you enjoyed it. It's a hell of a lot better than turning into a TV zombie.
As for not being worth much, some of these courses count as UCAS points and even those that don't, you're learning stuff that will make a possible future degree that little bit easier.
Anyway, well done and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Starting to wonder if I'm too old to learn shit. Been doing Spanish the last couple few months and very little of it is going in.
I appreciate you're never technically too old to learn, but my brain definitely doesn't work like it used to.

Maybe it's just not the right thing for you just now? I've tried to do stuff in the past that I've thought I'd wanted to do, but it's only this that's really piqued my interest and I find it's so effortless compared to other things I've tried.

Isn't just that particular subject, I don't seem to take anything in these days.
Had to retrain on some new aspects of my job in the last couple of years and it was just... none of this makes any sense.

In all seriousness though, apparently your brain needs to literally break down older connections in order to make new ones. Like anything it also needs to be trained, and honed. Learning is easier when younger because it's so used to learning. Everything is new. It may just take a bit of time to retrain your brain in order to learn. Keep at it. Smaller chunks at a time. Make sure your environment is how you like it and make sure that you try to not get distracted by the myriad of other shit that always creeps into our adult brains.
I think quite often we convince ourselves we're older, slower etc. There's no doubt it's probably true, but by convincing ourselves of it we make life harder for ourselves. I genuinely think there's no stopping us, but sometimes we need to adapt, or retrain parts of our body.
I started learning the saxophone last year. Never played a woodwind in my life. Yet here I am now nearing the start of grade 2 stuff on it already. It's a fucking cliche to say "you just need a positive mental attitude" but I tell you what, it goes a hell of a long way. It's not as easy as just giving yourself a mental slap, and it takes time to work years of regressive restrictions out our system, but I think you can do this. Try to strip away some of the other stresses of the day, and don't give yourself a timeframe for finishing either. As adults we're used to doing that, even on a more subconscious level. It's all structure, and time. All these little stresses add up and your brain can't focus properly.

Right. Just bought Scrivener to try and wrestle my novels into any kind of shape and maybe actually finish one of the fucking things. Meant to be quite good. The tutorial is bloody comprehensive anyway!

Thanks man. I wish I was actually good at it though! I've emailed myself a bit list of dates for story submissions in the next few months so going to try and send a few short stories off if, after I've re-read them, they're not utter bollocks.
What is it you do?

Psycho, there are people doing OU in there 90s, so it's possible. I agree it's harder as you get older, but that's as much because we're out of practice as anything else. Also, you might be leaving Spanish, but if you're not using it, it'll never stick. I went in plenty courses when I was young and never saw the kit until months later and barely recognised it. So get reading kids Spanish books or watching Spanish kids TV.
Musical instruments or a language are both the best things you can do to help your brain stay young. I'm going to get my violin dug out again, thanks Wunty. I might also start writing again. I was published (short stories in magazines) decades ago and then got married and that was that. I always wanted to be an author. I'll never be one now, but I used to really enjoy it. The ou creative writing course was great.
I like what Wunty days about clearing the stress from our lives. I've too much junk in mine which includes spending too long here. I want to help my youngest grow rock crystals and the chemistry set and finish my jigsaw and... Stuff. I'm getting no where fast and moaning about it. I've not looked at mandarin in ages and used to be reasonable at it. As you say, cut out the stress.

Oy, none of that! My trouble is I want to do EVERYTHING and there just isn't enough fucking hours in the day. Well, there would be if I quit my shite job but family to look after etc.

Yeah, I want to do everything too, but also have a shite job and when I'm not doing that I'm looking after my family and when I'm not doing that I'm sleeping or enroute to it.
I don't have much spare time, but if I didn't have to work, I'd do so much. That said, I just spent 80 hours on a game since Christmas, so actually I'm taking bollocks.

Various, but my two main sources of income are copywriting (so marketing text for websites, emails, fliers, etc.) and proofreading/editing. I really enjoy it!

That sounds great man. Do you do fiction as well? I’ve dabbled, but it’s really for me (to clarify: for fun, I mean). I’ve gifted one or two short fictional pieces to the local community here, which raised a couple of smiles, as was the intention.

EMarkM Ah cool. Sounds like you love what you do though, which is excellent. How about editing fiction? You can probably tell where I'm going with this...

For fiction, I’d tend to offer proofreading rather than full-on editing, as the requirements for publishers and so on tend to be quite specific for fiction. So, basic checks for spelling, grammar, syntax, etc. rather than style and “what will sell”.
