I thought we might like a thread to talk about courses, education and suchlike that we're doing. I know we've got an exercise thread but we don't have anything where people can encourage themselves (or others) to learn...stuff.
I've been snagging free Udemy courses as and when they appear via HDUK and I'm currently doing two courses via Future Learn (Cyber security and Maintaining a Mindful Life). I've started and failed to finish way too many courses and feel I'm stagnating a bit and that all I do is work, game, household chores and try and sleep.

I wouldn't mind a wee creative writing course if anyone knows of a good one. I did a few locally about 8 years ago but wouldn't mind something else.

Best one I ever did was with the Open University. It was heavily based on a book that you can buy online so that's an option. I can look it up for you if you want. The full course is part of a degree, so expensive.
Future learn do have a creative writing course as well, but I've not done it.

Taking a bit of time off work to do a few qualifications after I've decompressed a bit, as my last job was utterly shit at that side of things and I only got the likes of ITIL out of them and nothing technical. I kept pushing for monthly study days and the like but management would rather we stagnated or studied in our own free time (which given the stress I was already under just wasn't an option)
Still haven't decided what to do though. I love playing around with Docker, so will probably focus on something along those lines.

From past experience it is better to drop some cash into a course if you can afford it, it tends to push you a bit more to actually see the course through. Of course you don't have to go that way but if you tend to not see them through it may be the motive you need.
Both me and the missus are going to sign up for a couple of ACS courses when it cools down so we can work in the evenings and if the first one goes well then we'll look into some follow up ones. I want to do one on aquaculture and if that goes well enough then move on to fruit tree production and the wife wants to do the self sufficiency courses. There are plenty other ones too I'm interested in so maybe would do more later.

Ah brilliant man. I'll sign up for the free version on the Futurelearn one just now and see how I get on as it will be good to see if a course is something I can a) commit to and b) have time for. Nice one.

I am too old and lazy for such things. I think about various things I'd like to learn and then dismiss them with a "when I retire" wave of the hand.

I've been thinking a lot about volunteering lately, ideally for some wildlife related endeavours but I've not started looking yet. Perhaps if I post the intention here it might increase the likelihood of me doing something about it.
I've concluded I don't really do anything to help make the world a better place, so rather than moaning about how shit everything is I should get off my ass and help a tiny bit.

Lukus, that was part of the reason I made the thread, so I can at some point in the future say "I completed x course" and people who have no interest whatsoever in my life can ignore it and I can feel motivated to further progress by the waves of apathy directed towards me. Its a win win...

I’ve just completed a third round of talking therapy. Even if you’re doing ok it’s not a bad idea to give it a go. Especially after these last couple of years.

I took on a Python course when it popped up on Udemy (for free), as I wanted to learn it better and thought it might help with work, I started, but I never saw it through.
It's too easy to get distracted, or feels like too much of a chore after a long day doing work.

I occasionally pick up free courses from udemy and such. Recently enrolled on a beginner programming course.
By recently I mean like several months ago. Just haven't got round to it. I honestly don't know how people have the energy to do anything outside work, it's like my entire mental energy is just burned through, even find it hard to just keep up with TV shows or read fiction.
One day I'll get round to it.

Two 50 minute eliptical sessions finished (one today and one yesterday). PAI (whatever the hell that is) is 152.
Did it "running" along to some videos on YouTube of a guy runing around New Zealand. Obviously I had the Lord of The Rings Music playing along to get me going.
I'm currently a puddle of sweat.

I've got loads of online courses over the years, but rarely do them. Reminds me of trying to learn programming on the Spectrum from the Basic book when I was a kid. I find it very hard.
At the moment I'm doing a 25 day training program with the dog. Done 3 days in a month. It's like Crufts in the back garden, but outside the house it's like handling a wolf.

I have a license through work for an amazing site called Immersive Labs. Its ostensibly for cyber security people (apprentice level to SME, so full spectrum) but its just hundreds of short(ish) labs, theory and practical.
One of the problems with being in this field is the amount of learning you constantly have to do and because Im old, I hate it. So rather than do a full week of a SANs course I can just chip away at these bite sized chunks for an hour a shot. Its absolutely perfect for the ADD pensioner. It really addresses the 'fuck me, four days in a classroom being lectured by a boring tech nerd....' issues training tends to have.

My 2 NVQs and Diploma in I.T didn't get me far at all and it just left me feeling burnt out so didn't go to university.
In more recent years I've done very little apart from work related courses GDPR, Spectator safety, and ACT (action counters terrorism)
Two days ago I did however complete a one day 1st aid course. It's basic stuff but I felt like I learned something from it.

I've been taking a bass guitar course recommended by the folks on the musician thread. I don't think there's any chance of me getting to the heady heights of 'good' but the progress I'm making is really satisfying so I'm hoping to at least make it to 'not completely hopeless'.
Outside of that I get access to Cloud Academy and Udemy through work so I often take AWS and other tech courses. I try to do at least half an hour a day, it soon stacks up.

Don't be an arsehole (not saying you are one!). You could do some volunteering that involves helping people, something positive

Managed another 14km virtual run around a different part of New Zealand today. I almost enjoy it listening to LOTR and checking out the scenery. PAI is now at 200 (I think I should be chuffed about that... who knows).

The thing with the therapy I did was that it doesn’t fix anything, as such, but it does give you ways to handle your issues. I spend a lot of time in my own head and there’s not a obvious outlet in my life for me to talk about how I’m feeling or what is causing me inner pain. So therapy was a way to get that out there and discuss why I’m feeling that way and how to best move forward. If you’re anything like me you have a very emotional first few sessions and by the end of your course things are fairly convivial.

Got another blacksmithing thing booked up, also doing my track cycling accreditation at the moment. My idea of self improvement seems to be just fucking about playing with cool stuff and I’m happy with that

Sounds like a lot more fun than courses on networking and InfoSec stuff. I'm hoping to do a course of some sort tomorrow.
Managed another 14km this morning and Pai is now 228. Also meditated a couple of hours when my mind wouldn't switch off last night.

Well in preparation for a possible future complete start over I'm signing up for this course on tropical fruit production. www.acs.edu.au/courses/fruit-production-warm-climate-83.aspxIf all goes well I will do the one on temperate climate fruits as well and possibly an aquaculture one. The wife is going to pick a couple out too. I worked in vineyards for years so it's not entirely foreign to me, guess I'll see how it all goes.

Complete with an old relic of a man that didn't always seem to completely belong in our time. I wasn't quite as incompetent at beating metal with a hammer as with some other things. Some vague but fond/weird memories. It was interesting and frankly also a bit cool to have been part of that. I mean an actual forge in our times.....

Enrolled on Mindfulness for Wellbeing and Peak Performance course on Future Learn and also and Introduction to Cyber Security. I'm continuing to do daily virtual runs on my cross trainer. I did 22 km around Amsterdam this morning. Tomorrow I'm going to do Prague or Pompei.
