Yeah most of Fallout 1 is set in and around LA. So pretty much everything in there is relevant to some degree.

I also started with 3 (actually just started another play through some 15 years on) not to state the obvious but the trailer all looks a bit bright and beautiful, the world has just (supposed to have) come out of an apocalypse (obviously we suspend belief completely that any humanity whatsoever would actually survive) but really it shouldn't look quite so bright and breezy. I hope they retain some of the humour.

I had a dabble at Vegas and 4 but both not a patch on 3, somehow both a bit soulless.

Generally encouraged by the trailer but I agree that it looks too clean.
I seem to remember the same complaints being leveled at Amazon’s LOTR show too.

Whereas I only rate 1,2 and New Vegas as actually being good. The colour palette isn't that different I suppose but they had a more cartoony feel.

I love 3, but calling Vegas soulless compared to it is mental.
4 was a piece of shit.

3 is my favourite too, then NV (just started another playthrough last night) and I don't actually dislike 4.
I actually just finished a playthrough of 4 and the trailer of the show doesn't look that different visually to 4 or even 76 and for better or worse that's the FO style and look now so that's what it'll follow. I don't even mind the cartooniness of it. I'll download and give it a go anyway.

I can pinpoint the exact moment when this franchise died for me. It was this bit in the Fallout 76 trailer: I mean, what the hell is this? I don't want this. Whatever it is, it's not Fallout. For me, the franchise was already on life support after F4, and this pulled the plug. By the time Fallout 76 was actually released I found the resulting shit show more amusing than disappointing.

I must've played all of 10 minutes of '76. Created my character, got out of the vault and walked up to a dog that kept trying to move and snapping back into place.
Uninstalled it and said I'd try it again when they'd polished it a bit, but then a year or so later realised that I've got better things to be doing with my time.

Fallout 76 was so weird. Played it with a couple of friends for a couple of hours one evening and it really felt like we were all just missing something. The whole world felt completely empty. You would go into a settlement and there might be an NPC or two and a terminal. That would be it.
Some of the mission locations were quite nicely designed, but it was all just so barren. And missions were the most bog standard of bog standard RPG quests. I think by the end we did stumble upon a little home someone had made for themselves to suggest some sort of player construction available, but it was too little too late.
I couldn't believe that this was something that actually got released by a big company. There just seemed to be absolutely zero direction to any of it.

It improved a lot with patches, right now it's like a Fallout 4 with the odd real person around every now and then (until you get into the group events which can actually be a lot of fun), Bethesda adding human NPCs to a couple of areas really helped (was so depressing doing missions based entirely around long lost letters/terminal entries).
But yeah, bounced off it a couple of times before it clicked.

I'm about 70hrs into a Fallout 3 run through, having played the original back in the day, it's been quite fun though I bought the Game Of The Year edition and did the Anchorage and Zeta add-ons pretty early on so also had absurdly strong body armour and weapons pretty early so there's not much of a challenge now tbh, I know I could leave those weapons/armour in my store but you know.

I’ve never managed more than 3 or 4 hours of any of the Fallouts or sillier types of games (elder scrolls etc). I love the idea of them but the story doesn’t get interesting enough fast enough and the gameplay is more or less the same throughout that time and clunky. The tutorial areas are always incredibly dull and patronising too.

I've never met anyone outside of FO76 that's enjoyed it. I played it back when it was just robots and terminals and it was fine for me as my favourite part about the games is setting a marker on the opposite side of the map and exploring everything on the way to it. I don't really need a story or lots of action in these games.
Went back and did a new character when the second Brotherhood expansion (Steel Reign I think) came out and it was like a completely different game and ended up enjoying it more. Actually planning on going back in the new year once the next update is out, or the next half as I think it's in parts.
Even with a few hundred hours, the platinum and the fact I enjoy my time with it I still won't say it's a great game. It's fine, perfect for me to zone out to when I don't really want to think.

I'm surprised saying it's like Fallout 4 is tempting you. I finished Fallout 4 and all dlcs. Once I got past the force fed base building section and realised I could just ignore that nonsense and play it like FO3 I cracked on and for the most part enjoyed it. The dlcs are both very good! Mist admit though that opening town with the deathclaw… probably up there as one of the worst game openings of all time for me! Could have almost called it a day there!

What’s the cash grab catch with FO76 tho?
Do you regularly run out of bullets and have to buy more or some gubbins? There’s a cash grab mechanic in every freemium game right?

The first two games and NV are masterpieces, I will hear NO DISSENT from this inalienable fact.
I played a bit of 76 when it came out, I liked the lonely atmosphere of it. But then they added talking NPCs, which are probably my least favourite thing about Bethesda games. Haven't been back since.
I've liked some things about 3 and 4, mostly in the DLCs. Point Lookout and Far Harbour are good, but a good chunk of the other ones (eg. Zeta) are hot, hot garbage.
Bethesda has taken the franchise in their own direction, and imo made it into something not true to the spirit of the original games (and New Vegas). They *kind of* get it, but most of the similarities are surface-level. But aside from them being (imo) bad Fallout games, it's certainly possible for people to just appreciate and enjoy 3/4/76 as their own thing. People like Bethesda games, and that's fine!
3/4/76 are not personally for me, and it's a bit annoying that a franchise that was for me has been turned into something not for me, but... things die, things change into other things, and now I get to spread my wings and start appreciating something else. I'm happy to let it go.

Anyways tl;dr, I'm a bit concerned about the predominance of the Brotherhood in the advertising, because my enjoyment of the games has an inverse relationship to how much of the Brotherhood is in them.
But I'll watch the show because it has a Goggins in it.

There probably are some but I've never paid a penny and never felt underleveled or anything as a result. I'm guessing most of the money comes from cosmetics and charging for private world's (which really isn't needed as the maps only have I think 24 people and they only really come together in a couple of spots when someone sets of a nuke). Again that's not me saying they don't have loads, they probably charge for caps, legendaries and so on but I don't recall it as I never needed it.

Ultimately it becomes a game where the objective is to have the nicest house/base you can, and most of the DLC is centred around that. You also get junk and ammo stash boxes with unlimited capacity if you sub, which you can take out of but not add to if unsubbed, and a lot of boosts and cosmetic rewards from the season pass (which has a free tier with gameplay affecting items).

I never found myself needing any of that stuff but then again I only built one camp with all I needed and didn't try to make a massive elaborate thing. The other stuff I got more than enough doing the season scorecard things and events casually. I'm not the target player though, I played it as a single player game with occasional events. Probably plenty of ways to rip people off who wanted more.

Looks very good, and seemed to have got the vibe right. Hopefully they're keeping the super mutants and creatures of the Wasteland as a surprise.
