Thought a thread to discuss new albums or eps you might be listening too could be nice! (No vid inserts pls to keep the page content quick/low data)
I’ll start off with Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS it’s very good!
For a girl her age I really enjoy her lyrics as they are dense and playfully textured. It takes a few listens but she is an impressive young lady and I hope she can deliver the complexity of the songs well live through all the inevitable fangirl/boy screaming.
I’d definitely like to see her live on her tour for this album if pos as I thought her glasto performance was one of the highlights of last year’s event.
8/10 from me really enjoying it!

^ Agreed.
As I said in the other thread with the videos, she occasionally goes a bit too Avril Lavigne, but usually changes direction just in time. Every song being about the bloke she broke up with is a little much, but as you say her lyrics are usually smarter than you'd expect.
I thought Pretty isn't pretty was the only real weak song.

On the EP front Antony Szmirek's 'Poems to dance to' is still getting a few listens from me.

I don't tend to listen to many albums these days, at least not new ones. (I've been listening to a lot of stuff from my youth like GnR etc.. and then random spotify playlists).
I think the only other actual album from this year that I've listened to a lot was the Boygenius one (The Record) which was great. I'm not a massive fan of Phoebe Bridgers solo stuff, but really like their group stuff.
Now I feel like I should go and listen to some new albums.

There’s definitely something special about the Boygenius album. The ep is good but the album just really gets under your skin. The shows from this summer’s tour too ecstatic too.

A thread I can like, so over the past few months I have bought a fair few cd's (Posted in the what are you listening to thread a while back) I still like having copies of albums:
Smashing Pumpkins: Atom, impressed especially considering the 30 odd tracks. Kimbra: A reckoning: I like it. QOTSA: Times new roman, sounds a lot like the pervious album to me only weaker Amanda Shires: Take it like a man, really good. Miley Cyrus: ESV, excellent. Brandie Carlile: In these days, excellent. Re the 3 albums above, I love the female southern vocal. Blur: Ballad of Darren, really like it Roisin Murphy: Hit Parade. Class Pretenders: Relentless. Only played a couple of times, but so far so good. CH still sounds amazing live, at 72 when most of her contemporises cant sing for (or chew!) toffee, see Blondie!
Two from my youth Erasure: Wild remaster (I only ever had on cassette in the late 1980's) PSB: Introspective remaster, not a huge PSB fan but still love this album, another I purchased on cassette all those years ago!

I've been fairly underwhelmed by new music for a number of years. I remember an older mate of mine used to give me grief for getting into post punk revival bands in the 00s, and that it's all been done before. That's kind of how I feel at the moment. Anyway here's some I've liked. Can't really complain about more Slowdive. feeble little horse/Beach Fossils were different enough to not fall into the boring category of heard it before. Parannoul reminded me a bit of Jesu. JW Francis is pretty much Mac DeMarco. And lastly The Murder Capital are just superb! great album.
Girl with Fish- feeble little horse Everything is Alive - Slowdive Gigi's Recovery - The Murder Capital Bunny - Beach Fossils After the Magic - Parannoul Dream House - JW Francis

One of the biggest (only) things I'm really missing about having YouTube Music instead of Spotify is the recommendations. Spotify used to recommend based on my taste, YouTube just goes "here, this is what's out by EVERYONE!" and so I've just ignored it.
Therefore, my recommendations are pretty much my run of the mill hip hop and punk stuff.
Black Thought - Glorious Game Killer Mike - Michael Skyzoo - The Mind of a Saint Codefendants - This is Crimewave Samiam - Stowaway Hives - Randy Fitz

One of the weaker years so far for me. Only things I've liked:
Billy Woods - Maps Wednesday - Rat Saw God Yo La Tengo - This Stupid World The Murder Capital - Gigi's Recovery Ratboys - The Window
Not loved any of the above either - merely good to great.

Off to see Ash vs The Subways gig at Bexhill on Sea this Sat and delighted that Ash’s new album Race The Night is great! (very much a band comfortably flexing their muscles from Indie to Indie Rock) A super mix of tracks reminiscent of their best work… looking forward to seeing them live again… it’s been too long a time!

Gunship - Unicorn is out now. Loving it so far, it's loaded with 80s synth pop rock bangers, and also has a sequel to my favourite Gunship track (Tech Noir).

Borthers Osborne - self titled
Loved these guys and eveything they do (phenominal live if you ever get the chance!). The new album is another doozie. Maybe not as outright singalong as elements of their debut and last album but still some great songs in the mix! Highly recommended!

Gunship - Unicorn is out now. Loving it so far, it's loaded with 80s synth pop rock bangers, and also has a sequel to my favourite Gunship track (Tech Noir). I’m listening to this now. The singles they’ve released to date have been superb and I loved their last two albums, so this has a high probability of being my album or the year by miles. I’m enjoying it a lot so far! Edit: Finished listening to the album. It’s really, really good. Perhaps the first half feels stronger than the tracks towards the end, but that could equally be due to me having a bit more familiarity with the songs they’ve released as singles. Tech Noir 2 is particularly great - the way it calls back to the original, but still delivers something fresh and new - and brilliant - is all kinds of awesome. Even the clear “album tracks” are strong and don’t feel like filler at all. Run Like Hell reminded me a lot of Scandroid’s Awakening With You (which is no bad thing because I love that song too) but even where the writing is more conventionally synth-pop, the melodies are still strong. Anyway, there isn’t a bad / weak track on it and the production is immense. Definitely likely to be on my playlist for some time. I’m immediately going back for a second listen!

Every song on Unicorn has been great until the vocals start. Not for me I'm afraid, although it'd probably grow on me given a chance.

Funny how a vocal can sometimes grate. I really like Alex Westaway’s voice in Gunship - never had an issue from the first time I heard a song of theirs. I’ve also always liked Placebo / Brian Molko’s voice, but met many people who can’t bear him and think his singing is too nasal or accented.
But Lewis Capaldi or any of those other of those other (usually male) singer-songwriters whose idea of “showing emotion” in their music is to really strain for the high notes… yeah, like nails on a blackboard to me.

I've liked the singles I've listened to, though those were often collaborations with other vocalists. Maybe it's just hearing a lot of their songs all together.
His voice isn't bad, and it does have a bit of an 80s vibe, but it's lighter and more poppy than I'd have expected, so it makes the songs sound more pop than I expected.

Yeah, his voice is absolutely fine in isolation, but it just doesn't really fit with the music for me. It feels like they've absolutely nailed the aesthetic they were going for, but then the vocals come in and feel like they belong on a more contemporary song.

I'm kinda waiting on The Last Dinner Party releasing a full album.
I've enjoyed the new Paramour one, which is odd as I hated them when they broke out. It's not very emo or pop punk or whatever shite that was.

Bill in the rain dfunked You're in luck, they released an instrumentals-only version of their last two albums so probably will for this one too at some point.

The 'new' Sparklehorse album is a bittersweet listen.
I shan't embed a video, per the topic title, but the whole thing's available to stream via YouTube if anyone's interested.

The new Sufjan Stevens album is very fucking good, a lot of his stuff after Illinois hasn't grabbed me like that album did, but Javelin has had repeated listens already (only released Friday).

Creation Rebel - Hostile Environment (excellent new album from the dub greats)
Teeth of The Sea - Hive (psychedelic techno prog rock based on a Frank Herberts 'Hellstroms Hive' book. Yeah. Absolutely excellent, as weird as it sounds)

Its great. The Chromatics always said their albums were soundtracks to movies that never got made and I think this is probably exactly that.

Been listening to the new Steven Wilson album a little bit over the last week. Another belter. He falls into that camp like Radiohead where he just seems to be consistently contemporary. On first listen it kind of felt like lightbulb sun era porcupine tree, and leans into a lot of Floyd. But that feels like a lazy comparison. It’s a lot more than that.
