The new Sufjan Stevens album is very fucking good, a lot of his stuff after Illinois hasn't grabbed me like that album did, but Javelin has had repeated listens already (only released Friday). It is excellent so far. Interesting that Carrie and Lowell didn't grab you though if this does. |

Been listening to the new Steven Wilson album a little bit over the last week. Another belter. He falls into that camp like Radiohead where he just seems to be consistently contemporary. On first listen it kind of felt like lightbulb sun era porcupine tree, and leans into a lot of Floyd. But that feels like a lazy comparison. It’s a lot more than that. He's a bit of a genius. Ive been making my way through this compilation recently stevenwilsonpresents.tmstor.es/product/104559A curation of 10 years of alternative music and every one is an absolute banger. I got the two disc vinyl version which is about a third of the tracks but the whole thing is up on spotify/tidal/whatever. Really worth listening to as a fairly comprehensive history of some very, very good music. |

R.Ring - War poems, We Rested : Great album from Kelley Deal's other band
Dick Stusso - S.P. : Not as good as his last (In Heaven, but that's one of my favourite albums ever) but a cracking mix of tracks/styles and a great 3rd album which continues the story (all three are essentially concept albums)
Benefits - Nails : Won't be everyones cup of tea, but it manages to capture a bit of what it's like to see them live
More recently:
Meatraffle - Base and Superstructure : This one took a long time to come out having been recorded in lockdown, but it's got some absolute crackers on it. Groovy, funky, uplifting synth-pop.

I'm going through his backlog again to see what the hell was wrong with me He's got an unusual back catalogue - a lot of purely instrumental and sound scapey stuff. And there's just a lot in general! I have enjoyed the likes of Age of Adz and Ascension but they're certainly not stylistically aligned with Illinois (and Michigan and Seven swans) in the same way as this one is. Carrie and Lowell is aligned to those too and is what I might consider "classic Sufjan". It might even be his best. |

Its great. The Chromatics always said their albums were soundtracks to movies that never got made and I think this is probably exactly that. I was a bit confused for a second as I thought you were saying this was a new Chromatics album/project and got really excited. But yeah with Johnny Jewel of chromatics that was literally the case. He was getting score gigs and then losing them in favour of more experienced composers, and so he'd release those as albums instead. I had a really fun few years following their label and ordering cds direct from the states for pennies. Some cracking cds that still aren't available on streaming anywhere. |

I have been (slowly) going through is podcast with Tim Bowness ~ The Album years, which has been fantastic. They pick a year and go through releases they really like, and some the didn’t. They try to avoid obvious ones too, and both of these guys are music nerds so I’ve been turned on to some top stuff. Well worth a listen. |

Listened to the new Sufjan Stevens album a few times and it's still not grabbing me. Will Anyone Ever Love Me is alright, but it feels like he's just lost interest in writing hooks or interesting melodies like back in the Illinois days. Obviously he's had an awful year so I'm not one to kick him but it's yet another album that I wish had some of the old verve.

It's a bit more sparse in some ways like seven swans I suppose but there's certainly more to it than that album.
Nothing as bombastic as Chicago though tbf

Been really enjoying listening to Bluegrass by Willie Nelson today - his 74th solo studio record apparently!
Nothing wholly original, it's him doing bluegrass versions of some of his old hits, but there's a lot of talented session musicians on hand and it's a very easy listen (assuming you like Willie, if not, move along)

The new Stones album… not sure why I’m shocked it’s as good as it is but it’s brilliant!

The new King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard album (The Silver Cord) is out now in both regular and extended versions. It's a trippy, dancey, techno opus. Boggles my mind how this band can hop between genres so effortlessly and put out such high quality albums one after another (this one is their 25th).

Simple Minds New Gold Dream live from Paisley Abbey.
I am a huge fan of SM and NGD is one of the greatest 80's albums if not simply one of the greatest rock and pop albums of all time. The entire album is reprised here and sounds wonderful. Jim's vocals are not as strong as they once were (obviously?) but he still sounds great, Charlie is understated and class as ever, the rest of the current line up all do a great job. You are NEVER going to replace Forbes on bass or Mick and Mel but as I say the entire sound is very good.

If you like a bit of Shoegaze there is a new album out today by Hotline TNT (called Cartwheel) that is pretty bloody good. Not heard of them before today but was intrigued by the Pitchfork review I read.

They don't strike me as the most dynamic of live acts, based upon the videos I've seen on YouTube, but their studio output works just fine (even though Yorke and Greenwood have put out *far* better stuff, individually and together).
The 'new' Sonic Youth live album - an '80s bootleg that has finally been released in official form - is bloody fantastic.
