I just listened to the new OSees (Thee Oh Sees etc). There was a point where I absolutely loved everything they did, but they've become incredible tedious. I can't remember the last new album I enjoyed. I love that they keep developing their sound and every album is generally very different - I loved the last two albums, and have really enjoyed the singles leading up to this one. |

I would have agreed with you on developing their sound around the time of A Weird Exits/Odd Entrances. I just can't bring myself to listen to any of their other new albums. There's some decent songs on there sure, but I think I really preferred their more concise explosive sound of their early albums.

Fair, they haven't developed their sound too drastically over the past few albums (at least not to the extent of that period you mention), I just found A Foul Form really grabbed me and I don't mind that they've stuck to that kind of sound for a few albums now.

The album of the year just dropped. Fat Dog - Woof. There is no discussion. It's amazing. Not had a proper listen, but looks like it's going to be a big release for them and get a lot of hype. I first saw them a couple of years back at a festival. The following weekend got introduced to someone by a mate in his local. Couldn't quite put my finger on it then after chatting to him for a bit, realised it was there keyboard player. Met him a few times at various nights out and gigs along with a few of the others and they are a lovely unassuming bunch. Fame can do funny things to people but I think they will be alright. |

I’ve not paid attention to the Mercury Prize in forever but saw that English Teacher won this year. My wife’s played that album loads over the summer. Its decent stuff.

There are some good songs on it, but I was surprised they won. It was pleasant enough, but didn't set my ears alight with excitement. Maybe I just didn't listen to it enough and it's a grower of an album, rather than an immediate one. Anyhoo, looking forward to checking out the Fat Dog LP on my lunchtime walk today!  |

Catching up on some new releases that had somehow passed me by:
The latest Melvins album is pretty good. If you like their other stuff, you'll like this - it's nothing revolutionary, but still solid.
The new Belong album is... okay? It's not as good as October Language, nor is it as immediate as Common Era. More listens required.
Zombi's latest is more of the same. I like 'em, so I enjoyed this.
Alan Sparhawk has just released his second solo LP, and his first since Mimi Parker (Alan's wife/partner in Low) died. It's an odd one, but in a positive way.
John Carpenter's latest Lost Themes release fits right in with the first three, i.e. good but unremarkable.
Lastly, for now, The Jesus Lizard recently returned from a long hiatus - it's as though the intervening 20+ years never happened! Scintillating stuff.

The latest by The Smile is... eh, it's fine. They've always been my least-favourite Thom Yorke project by quite some distance, though, and this record does nothing whatsoever to alter said sentiments.
Next up, Thurston Moore!

Okay, this is some good shit - I've always loved Thurston's solo albums, and his latest is no exception. Highly recommended.
And finally for today, the second of two Broadcast demo compilations to come out in 2024. Less of a barrel-scraping cash-in than releases like this often are, and it's always lovely to hear Trish Keenan's voice (even if it'll be tinged with sadness forevermore).

Currently listening to Wanted - Five Points Gang (album).
They’re blues rock trio - some fantastic playing and great blues songwriting that gives a modern feel to the traditional song structures.
Definitely recommended.

Wall of Eyes was fucking great though, up there with the best Radiohead albums for me. Also listening to Geordie Greep - The New Sound (Black Midi frontman's solo debut). Proggy songs with latin vibes and weird horny lyrics. |

I've had some time to catch-up on recent releases, these being the best of the bunch: Public Service Broadcasting - The Last Flight I hadn't enjoyed the last few albums to the same extent as those first two albums which were excellent (Race for Space being the pinnacle for me), they've been good, but not compelling enough. With The Last Flight they've produced a really exceptional mix of songs, with masterful layering of the usual spoken elements (this time covering the story of Amelia Earhart's final flight) over a myriad of styles across the album. M J Lenderman - Manning Fireworks I absolutely love this album, and it has been on constant rotation since release. It's a lovely mix of alt-country and rock, full of tales of losers and misfits. He also had a really wonderful way with words, writing some exceptional lyrics. Highlights for anybody interested are "Wristwatch" and "She's Leaving You". Will probably end up as one of my favourite albums of the year I think. The Mystery Lights - Purgatory More of the same really, and that's not a bad thing. They are not a band that I'll put on to purposefully "listen" to and sing along with, but they are fantastic muscians and I love hearing new things each time I put them on. They are a wonderul mix of old and new, very psychedelic garage rock that doesn't try to just rip off what's been done before. Feels like the classic "dad rock" you'd have on the background whilst pottering about doing some dad shit. Babehoven - Water's Here in You I really like the sound this band has, a mix of indie and folk-rock, with a bit of shoegaze thrown in for good measure. It's a lovely album, not much else to say really |

I've got the PSB album arriving today. Really looking forward to it. Good to hear it's a goodun.
I agree Bright Magic was a bit of a nothing, but I have a soft spot for Every Valley. Played it again the other day after our last coal-fired power station was shut down. Felt like an oddly appropriate way to mark the moment.

I hit 'New releases' on Youtube Music on the regular as there's always a ton of interesting stuff there. Most of the artists I know or like that are included just released some live album but every once in a while, I'm stumped. Like this morning, when I saw Comforably Numb
