5-10 years ago if they’d asked for a couple of quid a month I’d still have the direct debit set up today most likely. Even £1 per month is way more than any ad revenue the average user generates and an independent Gamer Network could justifiably ask. Now it’s owned by a multibillion dollar parent company they can get fucked for £5.99 That's my position. When RPS was independent and asking for a couple of quid a month to turn ads off and the odd supporter post that was fine. Reedpop can do one. Didn't realise they're an events company. Wonder if they'll try and spin the sites off to someone else. At the time RPS overall had a more or less unique voice which was worth supporting too. That's been very much diluted by general articles to gather passing page views at this point.

It was certainly easier to justify throwing some money at "four starving games journalists striking out on their own" than whatever the site is now. Especially after stuff like booting Sin last year because I guess her stuff didn't bring in enough google clicks.

Wonder if they'll try and spin the sites off to someone else. The top company, RELX, is enormous - their turnover is several billions each year. Their events subsidiary Reed has most like been put under pressure to generate more income since events haven’t been happening. Gamer Network is presumably as self sufficient as they’ve ever been in the last 2 decades from ad revenue, but sure let’s squeeze some more out of it

On the plus side, all this talk of subscriptions made me wonder if I would actually pay to remove ads at the right price on the right site and it turns out that I would, so I now have a sub to Trueachievements at a very reasonable £20 per year.

Hello everyone. I was christourlord on EG a long, long time ago. I haven't posted there for years but it feels weird not having a connection to the EG forum now it's gone, so here I am.
I used to play Gears of War regularly with a bunch of EG folk and still think back on those nights as some of the best multiplayer times I've had. Marcomagnifico getting increasingly shit-faced and incoherent throughout each night. Good stuff.
Anyway, I will happily pay the Fontgeek subscription fee to add some ads to this place. It's weird having so much of my screen dedicated to actual content.

Sorry if it's already been mentined ad nauseum, but a few thoughts after almost two months in The New Place: - Everything is about 5x busier than it was at the end on EG: I don't think I'd had to go to Page 2 to see anything I cared about for years, whereas on FG I'm going back three or four pages just to see what's happened IN THE LAST 24 HOURS! - A lot of the old regulards have resurfaced, and I'm fucking overjoyed about that - hopefully more will come in from the cold. See above, for example. - There's a vibe again, and I have fair confidence that any fucktards are going to be unceremoniously "dealth with" without drama or hang-wringing. - It still retains just enough of a tie to EG which I feared we'd lose. - I bloody love you folks. In as inappropriate a way as you'd like it to be. Carry on.

Phattso I agree, it's been awesome to see it not only continue but actually improve with the addition of some new people

I prefer this place, I've already posted as much (if not more?) than I did in about 15 years.
I'd not visited EG since the shutdown other than to read all the fuss about the subs just to be nosey. I doubt I'll ever visit again because it's just not for me and there's plenty of other sites out there to get basic gaming news.

How frequently do you reckon some of the EG staff are checking these threads? A few times a day I'd bet.

Probably not at all. You could count on one finger the amount of staff who gave a shit about the forum or anyone on it.

I did the same on my favourite site too, but turns out I actually really missed the ads for horse cock dildos and MILFs Down To Bone In My Area, be careful what you wish for folks.

Eurogamer article pitch:
“Someone should make a game about paywalls” [Supporters Only]

Even if it's just a username. Being empathetic for a moment I'd be looking at it if I was part of the shebang (at least only the threads that are about EG). They must also be taking in our collective reaction to the new 'supporter' slop. At least in a cursive way. We are undoubtedly a pretty small % (but I did skim through the comments sections with a focus on how many unique usernames have so far 'supported' and it's a small small number). V early days of course. I was a lurker by any standard (320 odd posts in 11 years or so) but I do find this whole thing fascinating. I probably get about half the in-jokes. I know Mowgli shat on a chair but I don't get Font Geek so good. Is it a pun or just blarg?

It was meant to be "don't feel so good" but came out as "font geek", due to presumably still being drunk enough to shit on a chair. There should be a screenshot of the full post in the classic posts thread along with some other gems. fontgeek.io/thread/19/classic-thread-posts

Agree re the transition to this place. It's been pretty great and now I'm used to browsing the site, it's become second nature like the old forum was.

Yeah this place is class. I also like how if a dickhead turns up and starts shitting up threads, it doesn't take at least half a day to sort out and they get tactically nuked almost immediately.
Was worried it might be a five minute fad here but it actually seems busier than the other place tbh.

Anybody know how much was Gamer Network, or EG, or whatever actually sold for? A google brings up nothing.

I always used to use the front page way more than the forums, and even I haven't been on Eurogamer since this place was set up.
It's just nice to be able to chat about games/life on an equal level. The EG staff aren't really that interesting as people, so the 90 percent of the time the comments side with them in an argument or discussion always felt a little weird to me.

Shows how the EG forum could have been moderated better and improved with not much effort. I don't see much arguing on here. And Jablonski is back. 10/10 recommnedneddew

That's an interesting point you bring up there regarding the bias towards the writer of the article especially with the bullshit karma system in place in the comments. Even if you disagreed with author on something on a level that was actually constrictive you will he negged to high heaven.

I'd even say it took longer at times with some particular people who just say enough coded language to get around a GI. I remember Randolph being one of those particular cunts, well, until his mask fully slipped.
