Yeah I think it's great. Shows how the EG forum could have been moderated better and improved with not much effort. I'm not quite sure who all the mods here are, although I think I know of a few, however they've already moderated this place better than I ever saw over at EG, which makes it a far more enjoyable place to be.

Anybody know how much was Gamer Network, or EG, or whatever actually sold for? A google brings up nothing. Nothing seems cheap.

There was decent moderation at EG for spammers and obvious fucknuts. It was the insidious people who walked a very fine line of fuckwittery who were rarely weeded out, and I think that's where most of the rancour came from with regulars declaring the moderation to be horseshit. It wasn't, it just wasn't as blood and thunder as they might've liked. IMHO, obvs. Font Geek hasn't really been tested in quite the same way yet, so time will tell.

Phattso Well yes, so far of course. It was far too lax with a lot of the more antagonistic posters however.

I just like to think Rauper cleaned out these yanks for millions, and now they are scraping the barrel begging readers for cash. It would have been a fair chunk of change I'd imagine. A quick look at the accounts says they made pre tax profits of £1.4m in 2018, £2m in 2019 (year of sale) and a mere £548k in 2020. RELX by way of comparison made £2,241m, £1,500m and £1,014m across the same periods.

When I was briefly a mode for a couple of years, I was very much at the blood and thunder end of the spectrum, and that didn't go down well either. Mods did the best they could with the hand they were dealt - hopefully as a less high profile destination the mods here won't have to deal with anything on that scale.

Yeah modding on EG was good back in the day, unless the mods were having breakdowns, which was frequent enough.
The likes of Bundy/Spartan/etc were banned on sight continuously.
In more recent years it was of course, almost non-existent.

I actually remember getting my one and only timeout ever from you, Phattso. and to be fair you were right, I was being a right twat and not letting whatever it was at the time be. So much shit could have been avoided over there by stepping in and using the naughty step a little bit earlier.
But yeah. Over here it was nice, for example, to see that cunt in the depression thread the other day get stamped out immediately. There were a few times people were able to post shitty stuff all day in the old one which obviously isn't great for the people that actually find it helpful.

Granted the last few years of incredibly poor moderation at EG may well have coloured my memory of what the modding was like overall, and I'm not making light of the task that the moderators face. I was merely commenting that so far, on here, the moderation seems to be at least pro-active and on the right track for getting rid of the shit. I obviously cannot vouch for the future however.

Yeah I checked out of EG for years because every other thread kept going sideways with cu offal nts pouches.
My favourite thing here is the new posts button. Takes you straight to where you left off! Anything that can make me even lazier is a bonus.

I never perceived a moderation problem, I prefer things more hands off though. Anybody who could tolerate the human zoo Eurogamer was circa 2005/8 should have found the forum's twilight years gentle and mild in comparison.
I haven't even seen a fanboy fight for years. I miss those days.

Was going to like your post in a "I know the feeling" kind of way, but realised it'd probably come across the wrong way. So, eh... I know the feeling

*pours out a 40
And the thing you/we/they have to remember about EG moderation was that it was all done by volunteers and the irony of becoming a mod is that you are usually chosen because you are prolific in the community and then you immediately have all the fun taken out of being a part of it when you are knighted.
EG had 'bad' moderation towards the end because nobody could be fucked with it. All the volunteer mods left because their forum experience had started to suck.

Good point Geoff. So... basically we need to pay our mods?

I do wonder if this place being "ours" might make us (well, you fuckwits that go off the rails ) a little more hesitant to escalate the bullshit. Don't crap on your own doorstep and all that. Maybe. We'll see.

I mean, nobody gives a fuck if Rodger Reedpop gets upset, but imagine Neilka crying. IMAGINE IT! Don't forget to mop up afterwards.

To be fair I was expecting a little more of a fight early on from the bellends that used to rereg constantly and start all the shit over there. It'll hardly need any modding at all in a few months. At least until the food runs out and we have to choose who to eat first.

We'll see. Its probably more people being aware that the lunatics are in charge of the asylum. We have a few stealth mods and there is no rauper/oli to cry to if you get banned. And its not being run as a business so too bad, so sad if you get the bullet.

Yeah I guess, although I found it weird that people like Roguey just quit I honestly couldn't see what his reasoning was about regarding this place being toxic.

I think a few people took what were very obviously a couple of light hearted MOD POWAH moves as if it was going to turn into some sort of shitshow.

Yeah, the thing RPS guys and a few other people need to understand is that most moderating decisions are largely based on how funny or annoying something is.

Speaking of modding, the "John vs Arthur from red dead" thread could do with some attention (the title doesn't suggest spoilers and then bam. RDR is a pretty popular game)
edit: see, the modding here is class
