I will gladly volunteer my services to Font Geek's new all-male camwhore platform. (Non-nude only, mind - let's be honest, nobody wants to see that.)

Hey, a wholesome use of that joke finally Edit: Err, no clue how I missed half a page of posts but I was referring to this: which was referring to this: I think we all know who the best looking FG forumite is...

What’s interesting to me is that someone paid the MySpace guy half a billion dollars for access to his user base. Someone paid someone something for Eurogamer then told the user base to fuck off.
Which was basically something I’d always wanted to do in my “if I were suddenly rich” fantasies.

I rarely go on there these days. I wonder what the hit count is like since the forum went.

It probably is, as there are more posts specifically designed to garner random eyeballs via search.

I get the impression a lot of traffic to gaming sites come from Reddit, but the discussion is then on Reddit rather than the actual "news" site. It would certainly explain why they didn't really care about the loss of the forum and why the comments section seems quiet, even though Craig mentioned they're getting a lot of traffic.

It was funny once. It's getting a bit tiring now. Yeah. That's the reason I don't visit it any more. I don't spend as much time on Eurogamer as I find that there's not much that appeals to my sensibilities. EG haven't had a feature that I've wanted to delve into for a while. A good while at that. It's a website that's basically trading off its own legacy brand name at this point. Interesting that someone mentioned MySpace. MySpace was never the same after it got bought out. And look where it's now. I don't think EG will have the same fate in terms of its own impending irrelevance, but it's certainly not the revered website that it once was 5-odd years ago.

A recurrent affliction of the old EG forum was to navel gaze at the state of the place. Nice to see old traditions continue. The forum going would not made a blind bit off difference to the place. Back when AATG had that email breach, there were over a thousand email addresses leaked (according to haveibeenpwned.com/). As the place was made up entirely of people from EG creating alt accounts, that's probably a good indicator of the active user base of the forum at the time. This place has maxed out at around 797 users, which includes the RPS refugees. So that's what... at most 500 active forum users from EG when they pulled the plug? A few hundred people F5ing the the new post view of the forum and ignoring the rest of the site ("there's a front page?") is hardly the kind of engagement to be proud of. And a group of blokes posting "waheey! tits!" is probably not helpful to establishing a viable mass market brand in the modern age, either. Though yes it was better in recent years, whenever anybody bumped an old thread it was pages of cringe. Web forums are a thing of the past. Aggregator social media sites linking to sources and stimulating discussion are the new thing now, grandad.

I kept meaning to mention this but always forgot but:
I know there is a tendency to old man whine about how EG isn’t as good as it used to be but *every* YouTube video I have ever seen with gaming news uses/references/screen caps EG articles. It’s incredibly well respected in the “industry”.
And, honestly, even if it wasn’t, it’s just so fucking tiresome. Give it a rest.

It does seem a bit sour grapey in here at times (including myself). Time to just move on and read whatever gaming site ticks all of the boxes for you.

I genuinely don't mind EG. It's not as good as it used to be but I still check back once in a while and there was a pretty good article I read the other day about something or other. it's just not a must-visit site due to the forum closing, but it's no worse than any other games site I visit off and on.

Yeah, I think we’re about done with the whole “guys they must be doing terribly as I’m scouring every article for every time they mention diversity, lol” stuff.
