Turning all the assists off, and the AI/rules up to max made me quicker after the initial ‘wtf have I done this for’ stage. Forced me to find better lines, brake later/accelerate smoother etc.
Must admit though, in the latter stages of a race online, when the tyres are going and there’s someone filling my rear view mirror, I have pined for a touch of traction/stability assistance

Good point about better lines. The suggested line is so pedestrian. I much prefer approaching a corner wider than suggested, then braking and turning in late, hopefully hitting the apex, and getting on the power early.
I'm going to have to turn the suggested line off when I know the tracks a bit better because it's starting to get in the way.

Sorry, when I said all assists off I meant the car handling ones. I’ve left the lines into corners on.
You’re probably right though, would be better off without them but they’re like a comfort blanket. I use them sometimes without sticking to them - so I know to brake this much after it turns red on that corner, or go a cars width wider than the line into that corner etc

Yeah, with so many new (to me) tracks I've left the braking lines on at least. I've left the rewinding on as well. I do miss the trepidation I felt in GT7 when on the limit; I don't miss fucking up the last chicane at Spa on the penultimate lap of a five lap race and dropping down the order. This is why I'd be rubbish online.

It's fun turning the line off and doing a few championships offline, just knock the AI down a few levels and adjust as needed.
I had a couple of sessions on the sim rig with no crashing, driving the Escort Cosworth and Honda NSX with clutch and gear shifter was so much fun, I will try and do the class rival events in that set up.

When I got GT7 last year, it pretty much took over all of my gaming time. I think it might be more "fun" than Forza, because I'm a fool for its license test gamification, but it certainly wasn't as absorbing in the moment. In Forza, now that I've found the limit of my capability (Sport rules, level 5 AI, start around 10th), it's a fucking joy every single lap. Even the practice laps. Feeling the car evolve, getting a certain string of circuits that suit your playstyle, just the right weather conditions to let the gwafix sing... love it. Completed the opening tour in the single player this morning before work - when the Achievement popped it said only 7% of players had unlocked it. Thassa lorra multiplayers, or people bouncing off it, or people that can't even finish the tour because the cocking thing keeps crashing. On the plus side: I was able to quick resume into a practice session during which I had powered down the console due to going sideways off a bastard turn that got me every single lap. I gone back to GT7 in an effort to stave off a rash console purchase for this (did have an S in lockdown but sold it on as I thought owning all current gen consoles was a bit overkill). Reading this doesn’t help! I love GT7, I’ve played it for 145 hours apparently, plays great on a wheel, VR2 gave it a fresh leash of life and going back to it on a controller this week (can’t be arse to set the wheel up and the foldable playseat still takes up a fair bit of room), it drives like a dream. Just that in sport mode; where I spend a majority of my time, it doesn’t have that much variety. It’s pretty much either GR3 or 4 cars. Fun to drive but seeing touring car and open world Mazda and Hypercars playlists in Forza make me a bit envious. Seems the game isn’t in great shape and it needs a lot of work but the actual core driving seems a lot of fun, which carries the multiplayer. Interesting that you mention player engagement being low, was reading this morning that I think 11% of people have completed a multiplayer race. So people really aren’t engaging with it, either through no fault of their own or Horizon is where it is at these days.

It’s on GP, so people can have a go for ‘free’. Anecdotal, and small scale, but in my circle of 7 that play together regularly they’ve all installed it and had a go. But none of them are into driving games, so universally they’ve all said something like ‘this is way harder than horizon, sod that’ Not had any issues getting into full lobbies in MP - I’d say 2 thirds of the time there’s between 16 and 24 racing - until the first corner carnage anyway. Don’t think I’ve seen a lobby less than 12 or so. I’ve tried GT - last gen I was ps4, and I love racing games, so I really tried with Sport. But I couldn’t get on board with the handling, just felt off, sterile maybe. Not tried 7, and I can see how VR would be a complete game changer…but the handling in motorsport just feels alive. I’ve said elsewhere on here, so much fun, every race is a story. And on Series X in my experience it’s not broken, sure there’s a few wrinkles, but nothing game breaking IMO. TLDR - bite the bullet, get the console, it’s worth it!

Still have some crashing/stuck saving issues. They mainly occur between races when adding upgrades or tuning, which causes it to hang which (if rebooting) loses the last race. Exiting out between races then going back in seems to mitigate against it, and doesn't take long, just need to remember to do it!
It really is a lot of fun though.
I've now switched the steering to Simulation, which has made the cars harder to keep under control (especially exiting corners), but at the same time more responsive turning into corners.
I still have ABS on, but try to ease off if the breaks are locking up (I find the rumble really easy to read) and by the end of the practice laps I have most corners down pretty well.
Similarly I have traction and stability off, and find exiting corners I am getting a lot better at easing back on the throttle at just the right level - overdoing it a tad if I want some oversteer to help me when I have gone a tad to wide. Too much and you will spin, but the Sim setting allows for finer control and a quicker response.

I agree this feels a fair bit less sterile than GT7, it’s almost as if some of the loose Horizon physics are in there, which I wouldn’t say is any more realistic, but it’s super satisfying. You do feel like you’re wringing the neck of the cars. It’s ragged Touring Cars rather than the more clinical F1 for me.
They need to fucking nail the next patch though- it needs some OMFG ThEy’Ve FiXEnAteD iT press.

With enough notice I might be able to join and prop up the back-markers proudly.
Had my first foray into the MP during the week, doing the three pre-requisite events, and I *loved* the raceday feel of it all. It wasn't just a track playlist blitzing by - practice, quali, race. Loved it.

Mornings not so good for me, but then any regular slot is tricky, but hope to get on with you all at some point.
I'm finding online a bit annoying at the moment. I've played quite a bit now and am S Rank for safety but get put in races with some terrible drivers. The first corner is always a nightmare and a lottery, but it's later on when it gets bad. Far to often I'm rammed from behind by someone who clearly intended on using me to slow down, it's not accidental as they do it corner after corner till they spin you off. Or cutting in when they have no chance of getting round a corner without using you as a side rail.
GT7 handles the penalties better I think, but also the ghosting of bad drivers (so instead of being able to use you as a break, they will fly past the corner into the gravel). They really need to do something as it's ruining the experience for me. I often qualify mid grid and have had a few races where it's all gone well. I've climbed or dropped a few places, but all through fair racing. But I've had too many races where I'm spun out by some dickhead then left essentially time trialing.

ACC do it well- essentially any contact and both parties are penalised. Sounds punitive, possibly is a bit, but in practice people do just go extra cautious and leave more room. The ghost rammers would be an excellent start though.

This is consistent with my experience. It’s a bit rubbish when you qualify well then get punted to the back by the end of the first lap. This happened to me last night and I finished the race in 16th or something so wasn’t a lot of fun. Especially when it can take quite a while to get into a race now. I really enjoy the driving but I feel like the skill and safety ratings are not working as intended.

I think the fact it’s on GP plays a part. Lots of people ‘giving it a go’ rather than if it was people paying for the game only, where the majority of the player base would be more invested in things like the skill and safety ratings.
There are some total asswipes around. If you can get to the front runners it’s generally, but not exclusively, a much better experience than further back.
If you do end up further back I find it’s better to avoid trouble, they’ll fuck up eventually. If you’re quicker than the car in front give them a few corners to assess their level of asswipery before making a move.
Not ideal but it is what it is sadly

Update 2.0 out. Let’s hope that improves stability and you know, you can actually watch a replay.
This game confuses me. I really like the driving but the rest of it feels very hollow.
Shall we try to find another time for some multiplayer? Or failing that we could do some time trials?

Is there a way of setting up a group for time trials? In the game I mean, like the clubs bit on wrc
